Nirsevimab and Acute Bronchiolitis Admissions in Infants Under One Year of Age.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spain was among the first countries to implement universal prophylaxis for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) using nirsevimab, leading to a 60%-80% reduction in bronchiolitis hospital admissions. The main objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of infants admitted with bronchiolitis after RSV prophylaxis had been established. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 15 Spanish pediatric emergency departments during the 2023-2024 RSV season. We reviewed medical records coded as "acute bronchiolitis" of infants aged less than 12 months who w

Evaluation of Intestinal Permeability in Children Diagnosed With Bronchiolitis in Pediatric Emergency Department: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis is the most common lower respiratory tract infection, with the most commonly isolated organism being respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Despite several studies on intestinal permeability in various acute and chronic pulmonary diseases, studies examining these molecules in patients diagnosed with bronchiolitis are very limited. This study was conducted to examine zonulin and claudin-3 levels to evaluate intestinal permeability in children diagnosed with bronchiolitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 98 children, 60 patients with bronchiolitis and 38 healthy controls

Rates of Lower Respiratory Tract Illness in US Adults by Age and Comorbidity Profile.

INTRODUCTION: While it is widely recognized that older adults, adults with chronic medical conditions (CMC), and adults with immunocompromising conditions (IC) are at increased risk of lower respiratory tract illness (LRTI), evidence of the magnitude of increased risk is limited. This study was thus undertaken to characterize rates of hospitalized and ambulatory LRTI among United States (US) adults by age and comorbidity profile. METHODS: A retrospective cohort design and US healthcare claims database (2016-2019) were employed. Study population included adults aged ≥ 18 years and was stratifi

Prevalence of Influenza Viruses A and B, Adenovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and Human Metapneumonia Viruses among Children with Acute Respiratory Tract Infection.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide. The majority of acute respiratory infections in children are caused by viruses, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being the most frequently encountered. Other important viral pathogens include human metapneumovirus, human coronaviruses, adenovirus, and influenza. These infections can lead to complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. So, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of influenza viruses A and B, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),

Fatal Deterioration of a Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in an Infant with Abnormal Muscularization of Intra-Acinar Pulmonary Arteries: Autopsy and Histological Findings.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection represents a global and noteworthy cause of hospitalization and death in infants of less than 1 year of age. The typical clinical manifestation is bronchiolitis, an inflammatory process of the small airways. The symptoms are usually a brief period of low-grade fever, cough, coryza, breathing difficulties, and reduced feeding. The progression of the disease is difficult to predict, even in previous healthy subjects. Symptoms may also be subtle and underestimated, thus leading to sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). In these cases, RSV infection is d

Validity of Clinical Severity Scores for Respiratory Syncytial Virus: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a widespread respiratory pathogen, and RSV-related acute lower respiratory tract infections are the most common cause of respiratory hospitalization in children <2 years of age. Over the last 2 decades, a number of severity scores have been proposed to quantify disease severity for RSV in children, yet there remains no overall consensus on the most clinically useful score. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of English-language publications in peer-reviewed journals published since January 2000 assessing the validity of severity scores fo
