Acute viral bronchiolitis is the major cause of hospital admissions in children under 2 years of age, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can be responsible for up to 80% of these infections. We aimed to describe RSV dynamics among hospitalized children with bronchiolitis. Upper respiratory samples of 101 hospitalized patients were collected and submitted to RSV detection by a quantitative real-time RT-PCR to assess viral load (Log10 RNA copies/mL). Seventy-two patients were positive for RSV infection, of which 38 (52.7%) could be followed up until RSV was no longer detected. The first RSV R

Severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infancy is associated with increased risk of recurrent wheezing in childhood. Both acute and long-term alterations in airway functions are thought to be related to inefficient antiviral immune response. The airway epithelium, the first target of RSV, normally acts as an immunological barrier able to elicit an effective immune reaction but may also be programmed to directly promote a Th2 response, independently from Th2 lymphocyte involvement. Recognition of RSV transcripts and viral replication intermediates by bronchial epithelial cells br

BACKGROUND: Seasonal epidemics of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cause a clinically significant burden of disease among young children. Non-pharmaceutical interventions targeted at SARS-CoV-2 have affected the activity of other respiratory pathogens. We describe changes in the epidemiology of RSV among children younger than 5 years in England since 2020.
METHODS: Surveillance data on RSV infections, comprising laboratory-confirmed cases, proportion of positive tests, hospital admissions for RSV-attributable illness, and syndromic indicators for RSV-associated disease (emergency department

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophils are crucial to antimicrobial defense, but excessive neutrophilic inflammation elicits immune pathology. Currently, no effective treatment exists to curb neutrophil activation. However, neutrophils express a variety of inhibitory receptors which may represent potential therapeutic targets to limit neutrophilic inflammation. Indeed, we previously showed that the inhibitory collagen receptor leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor 1 (LAIR-1) regulates neutrophilic airway inflammation and inhibits neutrophil extracellular trap formation. The inhibitory receptor

Similarly to many respiratory viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is surprising in its ability to reinfect children and adults who have already been immunized. It is not so much in the evolution of its genome that we must look for the cause, but more probably in the structure/function of its viral proteins, which are capable of interfering with the immune response and memory. After an incubation of three to eight days, RSV infection most often results in nasopharyngitis with little or no fever. RSV infection of the respiratory epithelium is characterized by marked mucus production, desq

Acute bronchiolitis is a very common condition in infants. It has a major effect on consultations in cities and use of hospital emergency rooms. The analysis of clinical data makes it easily to confirm the diagnosis and to assess the severity at the time of the evaluation, which determines the rest of the treatment. In all cases, families should be provided with simple monitoring advice given the potentially rapid development of the signs, especially in the youngest infants and those with vulnerability criteria.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this report was to comprehensively analyze the clinical characteristics of children hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in 2021 during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to compare them with those in the five previous RSV seasons. We hypothesized that the clinical and demographic features of children hospitalized with RSV infection in 2021 were different from those hospitalized in previous respiratory seasons.
STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective observational study, children younger than 2 years hospitalized with RS

OBJECTIVES: Acute bronchiolitis is a major public health issue with high number of infants hospitalised worldwide each year. In France, hospitalisations mostly occur between October and March and peak in December. A reduction of emergency visits for bronchiolitis has been observed at onset of the COVID-19 outbreak. We aimed to assess the pandemic effects on the hospitalisations for bronchiolitis during the 2020-2021 winter (COVID-19 period) compared with three previous winters (pre-COVID-19).
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational and cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: It has become clear that severe bronchiolitis is a heterogeneous disease; even so, current bronchiolitis management guidelines rely on the one-size-fits-all approach regarding achieving both short-term and chronic outcomes. It has been speculated that the use of molecular markers could guide more effective pharmacological management and achieve the prevention of chronic respiratory sequelae. Existing data suggest that asthma-like treatment (systemic corticosteroids and beta2-agonists) in infants with rhinovirus-induced bronchiolitis is associated with improved short-term and chroni

Respiratory viruses like rhinovirus, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronavirus cause several respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and coronavirus disease 2019, and exacerbate bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and diffuse panbronchiolitis. The production of inflammatory mediators and mucin and the accumulation of inflammatory cells have been reported in patients with viral infection-induced respiratory diseases. Acute bronchiolitis caused by the respiratory syncytial virus triggers an inflammatory response with the production and release of several pro-inflammatory cytokines. Evidence suggests that their levels are associated with the severity of the infection. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess whether the levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ are associated with the severity of acute viral bronchiolitis. We searched MEDLINE libraries (via PUBMED), EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American Caribbean Health S

Over two years (2012-2014), 719 nasopharyngeal samples were collected from 6-week- to 12-month-old infants presenting at the emergency department with moderate to severe acute bronchiolitis. Viral testing was performed, and we found that 98% of samples were positive, including 90% for respiratory syncytial virus, 34% for human rhino virus, and 55% for viral co-detections, with a predominance of RSV/HRV co-infections (30%). Interestingly, we found that the risk of being infected by HRV is higher in the absence of RSV, suggesting interferences or exclusion mechanisms between these two viruses. C

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the major cause of acute bronchiolitis in infants under 2 years old. Necroptosis has been implicated in the outcomes of respiratory virus infections. We report that RSV infection triggers necroptosis in primary mouse macrophages and human monocytes in a RIPK1-, RIPK3- and MLKL-dependent manner. Moreover, necroptosis pathways are harmful to RSV clearance from alveolar macrophages. Additionally, Ripk3-/- mice were protected from RSV-induced weight loss and presented with reduced viral loads in the lungs.Alveolar macrophage depletion also protected mice from w
