β2-adrenergic signaling controls neonatal respiratory syncytial virus infection by promoting viral clearance and airway protection.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under 5 years of age. RSV infection is characterized by lung inflammation, viral expansion, and airway barrier destruction. The crosstalk between neurons and immune and non-immune cells develops from early life onwards. The lungs and airways are densely innervated by sympathetic neurons where they secrete the neurotransmitter noradrenaline (NA) at homeostasis and following injury in adult mice. NA, once secreted into the lungs, can act on immune and non-immune cells through β-adrenergic

B-Raf kinase blockade protects airway epithelial cells against respiratory syncytial virus infection and modulates interferon responses.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the primary cause of hospitalisation due to acute bronchiolitis and viral pneumonia in infants and young children. Recently, a maternal RSV vaccine (Pfizer's Abrysvo) has been approved to protect infants from birth up to 6 months of age. However, there is currently no vaccine or antiviral therapy against RSV for children aged >6 months. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel antiviral therapies against RSV infection for young children. METHODS: We hypothesised that blocking a host protein called B-Raf kinase would inhibit RSV replication

Study protocol: Effectiveness of the maternal RSVpreF vaccine by virus type.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus with two antigenic types, A and B, that cause significant morbidity and mortality in infants globally. A recently developed maternal vaccination based on the prefusion F protein ("RSVpreF") could have a significant impact on disease burden, if introduced globally. Whether or not the effectiveness of this vaccine is affected by circulating viral genomic variability is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the vaccine effectiveness of maternal RSVpreF administration in preventing hospitalisation in infants is affected by RSV t

Genetic Susceptibility to Acute Viral Bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute viral bronchiolitis is a major cause of infant hospitalizations worldwide. Childhood bronchiolitis is considered a risk factor for asthma, suggesting shared genetic factors and biological pathways. Genetic risk loci may provide new insights into disease pathogenesis. METHODS: We conducted a genome-wide association study to examine the genetic contributions to bronchiolitis susceptibility in the FinnGen project data. We analyzed 1465 infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis who were <2 years of age and 356 404 individuals without a history of acute lower respiratory infections.

Upper Blepharoplasty in Dermatochalasis: A Retrospective Study of Our Cases.

BACKGROUND: Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct excess sagging skin of the upper eyelid (acquired dermatochalasis), which commonly occurs due to aging, with an incidence of approximately 65% in individuals over 60 years old. However, it can also manifest earlier in younger patients with a genetic predisposition or among Asian populations. Beyond its esthetic benefits, upper blepharoplasty has functional implications, particularly in cases of moderate to severe dermatochalasis, where excess skin can obstruct the visual field. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate

Peripheral blood and nasal swabs Type I and III IFNs signature in RSV positive infant with bronchiolitis.

Bronchiolitis is an acute lower respiratory tract infection mainly affecting children under 24 months, primarily caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Interferons (IFNs), cytokines central to innate and adaptive immunity, are secreted in response to viral infections. In RSV bronchiolitis, Type I and III IFN Signatures modulate antiviral responses and impact disease severity. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between Type I and III IFNs transcriptional signatures in blood and nasal swabs with clinical presentation. We analyzed transcription levels of Type I and III IFN Signatu

Respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis complicated by spontaneous pneumothorax in an infant: a case report.

Acute bronchiolitis is the most common viral lower respiratory tract infection in infants, with an annual incidence of 3-5% in children under 12 months, peaking between 2 and 6 months of age. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is responsible for 50-80% of cases. Although generally benign, bronchiolitis may be complicated by spontaneous pneumothorax, which is reported in only 0.5-2% of hospitalized infants, making it a rare but potentially life-threatening event. We report the case of an 11-month-old female infant with a family history of maternal asthma, admitted for acute respiratory distress

Prevention of Respiratory Syncytial Bronchiolitis.

Acute bronchiolitis is the leading cause of hospital admissions among infants worldwide and is associated with increased morbidity. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common causative agent and is often linked to a more severe and prolonged form than that caused by other viral agents. The annual outbreaks of bronchiolitis place substantial strain on pediatric emergency departments, hospital bed availability, and saturation of resuscitation beds. Most RSV bronchiolitis hospitalizations occur during the first three months of life in healthy term neonates. Management for RSV-relate

Human Metapneumovirus: A Comprehensive Epidemiological Analysis of a Global Respiratory Threat.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen that contributes to acute respiratory infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Since its discovery in 2001, HMPV has become a global health concern, with epidemiological data revealing seasonal peaks and notable genetic diversity. The virus is associated with a wide range of respiratory illnesses, including bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and asthma exacerbations, leading to substantial hospitalization rates and healthcare costs. This review examines the epid

Hospitalizations due to acute respiratory tract infections caused by human metapneumovirus in Costa Rican children.

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory infection in children, particularly early in life. Despite this, there are few prospective hMPV studies in Latin American children and this is the only of that kind in Costa Rica. METHODS: We conducted an observational descriptive prospective study at the only national tertiary referral pediatric hospital of the country. We included children < 13 years of age with a laboratory-confirmed hMPV episode of acute respiratory tract infection requiring hospitalization from September 1, 2015, to September 30, 2017. Diagn
