Respiratory viral infections in lung transplantation: Recent advances in epidemiology, clinical impact, and therapeutic approaches.

Respiratory viruses encompass a diverse group of viruses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza (PIV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and adenovirus. Lung transplant recipients are particularly vulnerable to complications from respiratory viral infections (RVIs), leading to increased morbidity and mortality. This heightened risk is a result of both anatomical and functional modifications from transplant surgery, as well as immunosuppressive therapy. Beyond the immediate morbidity associated with infect

Multi-epitope vaccine design against human metapneumovirus via reverse vaccinology and molecular modelling.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory viral pathogen classified within the Paramyxoviridae family and is a significant cause of acute respiratory tract infections. The vaccine construct maintains stable binding affinity with targeted receptors anaffects young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. HMPV was recognized initially in 2001. HMPV exhibits characteristics similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and generally causes symptoms ranging from mild, cold-like signs to more severe issues such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. This study employs reverse vaccinolo

Systemic IL-10 and IFN-γ Levels in Respiratory Syncytial Virus- and Rhinovirus-Infected Bulgarian Children with Acute Bronchiolitis and Their Impact on Clinical Manifestation.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus (RV)-the two primary causative viruses of bronchiolitis in children-have been studied extensively in terms of their associations with disease severity and serious late disease outcomes. In this study, we explored the differences in the clinical values of IFN-γ and IL-10 serum levels in RSV and RV bronchiolitis in the Bulgarian childhood population. Eighty-eight children with acute bronchiolitis, aged two months to two years, who were admitted to the General Pediatrics Clinic of University Hospital "Prof. St. Kirkovich", Stara Zagora, Bulgaria se

Air pollution, nasal microbiota, and bronchiolitis: understanding their interplay through a multilevel approach.

Bronchiolitis is a severe acute lower respiratory tract condition in infants, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection being a leading cause. Despite extensive research, the factors influencing the severity of bronchiolitis remain poorly understood. Environmental factors, including exposure to particulate matter (PM) with diameters ≤10 μm (PM10) and ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), are suspected of exacerbating RSV bronchiolitis by enhancing inflammatory pathways. We previously demonstrated that PM10 and PM2.5 levels during the three weeks preceding pediatric emergency department admission (the -3rd w

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Epidemiology in Argentina: From COVID-19 Pandemic to the Maternal Immunization Strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and hospital admissions among infants and young children. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the epidemiology and clinical patterns of respiratory viruses other than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Argentina introduced the RSV maternal vaccine in 2024. This multicenter study describes the clinical-epidemiological profile of hospitalized pediatric patients with LRTI associated with RSV in Argentina, comparing pre- and postpandemic periods, and identifie

Inhaled "Muco-Trapping" Monoclonal Antibody Effectively Treats Established Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infections.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes substantial morbidity and mortality in infants, the immunocompromised, and the elderly. RSV infects the airway epithelium via the apical membrane and almost exclusively sheds progeny virions back into the airway mucus (AM), making RSV difficult to target by systemically administered therapies. An inhalable "muco-trapping" variant of motavizumab (Mota-MT), a potent neutralizing mAb against RSV F is engineered. Mota-MT traps RSV in AM via polyvalent Fc-mucin bonds, reducing the fraction of fast-moving RSV particles in both fresh pediatric and adult AM by

Updates on respiratory syncytial virus prophylaxis: the past, present and future.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes acute respiratory infection in individuals of all age groups. It is the most common pathogen identified in infants and young children with acute lower respiratory infection. Although most infants and young children experience mild, cold-like symptoms, some infants develop severe lower respiratory tract disease such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis that may result in an emergency department visit or hospitalization. RECENT FINDINGS: In the United States, hospitalization rates have risen during the last decades, and while premature

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection and Apnea Risk As Criteria for Hospitalization in Full Term Healthy Infants.

Introduction Apnea is recognized as a serious and potentially life-threatening complication associated with Respiratory Syncope Virus (RSV). The literature reports a wide range of apnea rates for infants with comorbid factors. Prematurity and young chronological age have been historically associated with the risk of apnea in hospitalized infants. Few studies have specifically examined the risk of apnea in healthy infants presenting to the emergency department. Methods This is a retrospective review of infants diagnosed with RSV using a PCR assay. Patients were divided into "mild" and "severe"
