Acute bronchiolitis is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in young children. While multiple viruses contribute to its pathogenesis, their impact on disease severity remains unclear. In this cross-sectional observational study, children with bronchiolitis were enrolled. Baseline characteristics, bronchiolitis severity score, Respiratory Distress Assessment Instrument score, duration of hospitalization, and respiratory support requirements were recorded. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were analyzed via real-time polymerase chain reaction. Among 52 enrolled children (median age: 3 mo

Acute bronchiolitis is a major destabilizing factor in infants with congenital heart disease and left-to-right shunt lesions, as it exacerbates pulmonary overcirculation and compromises systemic perfusion. We report the case of a 5-month-old infant with a large ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and severe mitral regurgitation, all with significant hemodynamic repercussions, who developed moderate acute bronchiolitis caused by human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza virus type 3. Despite initial management with continuous positive airway pressure and intravenous vasodilators,

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a leading viral cause of respiratory infections worldwide, particularly affecting children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Since its discovery in 2001, HMPV has been recognized as a significant pathogen responsible for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections, often manifesting as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and wheezing in infants, as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in older adults and immunocompromised patients. Although it shares clinical features with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), HMPV is genetically distinc

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of bronchiolitis and hospitalization in infants. Since 2023, France has implemented two preventive strategies aimed at reducing RSV burden: long-acting monoclonal antibody nirsevimab and RSV vaccine for pregnant women, the latter becoming available from September 2024. This study aimed to assess the impact of RSV preventive strategies on the clinical severity and viral epidemiology of bronchiolitis in hospitalized infants.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study at Armand Trousseau University Hospital, inclu

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in infants. Although influenza, parainfluenza, and human metapneumovirus also contribute to LRTI-related hospitalizations, their comparative population-level healthcare burden is not well defined. This study compared population-level healthcare utilization (HCU) associated with RSV-LRTI and LRTI caused by other respiratory viruses (ORspV-LRTI).
METHODS: This nationwide retrospective cohort study used electronic health records from Clalit Health Services (CHS), covering more than 5 mi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Acute respiratory viral infections (ARVIs) are the leading cause of pediatric morbidity and exhibit considerable clinical heterogeneity. The analysis of clinical and etiological associations, as well as the identification of factors linked to severe ARVI cases, is essential for effective epidemiological surveillance.
METHODS: A retrospective, single-center observational study was conducted including 1362 non-COVID-19 pediatric cases of acute respiratory infections (ARIs), registered between 2021 and 2024. Viral pathogens were detected using real-time PCR for broad-spect

BACKGROUND: Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct excess sagging skin of the upper eyelid (acquired dermatochalasis), which commonly occurs due to aging, with an incidence of approximately 65% in individuals over 60 years old. However, it can also manifest earlier in younger patients with a genetic predisposition or among Asian populations. Beyond its esthetic benefits, upper blepharoplasty has functional implications, particularly in cases of moderate to severe dermatochalasis, where excess skin can obstruct the visual field.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Significant complications arise from Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), especially in susceptible groups. hMPV infection is highly prevalent in children, accounting for about 10% hospitalizations for acute respiratory infections, often resulting in pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Hence, there is need for new knowledge to understand the structure, the clinical features, diagnostics, treatment options and the complications of the hMPV.
AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: This review covered the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostics, treatment options and public health implicat

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory infection in children, particularly early in life. Despite this, there are few prospective hMPV studies in Latin American children and this is the only of that kind in Costa Rica.
METHODS: We conducted an observational descriptive prospective study at the only national tertiary referral pediatric hospital of the country. We included children < 13 years of age with a laboratory-confirmed hMPV episode of acute respiratory tract infection requiring hospitalization from September 1, 2015, to September 30, 2017. Diagn

Respiratory viruses encompass a diverse group of viruses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza (PIV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and adenovirus. Lung transplant recipients are particularly vulnerable to complications from respiratory viral infections (RVIs), leading to increased morbidity and mortality. This heightened risk is a result of both anatomical and functional modifications from transplant surgery, as well as immunosuppressive therapy. Beyond the immediate morbidity associated with infect

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and hospital admissions among infants and young children. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the epidemiology and clinical patterns of respiratory viruses other than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Argentina introduced the RSV maternal vaccine in 2024. This multicenter study describes the clinical-epidemiological profile of hospitalized pediatric patients with LRTI associated with RSV in Argentina, comparing pre- and postpandemic periods, and identifie
