The authors report 14 cases of Wegener granulomatosis in which one or more paranasal sinuses were obliterated by bone. The maxillary antra were involved in all cases, with the other sinuses being affected less frequently. These changes are thought to result from chronic bacterial sinusitis superimposed on the granulomatous vasculitic process. Computed tomography dramatically demonstrated the bone changes, consisting of a combination of sinus wall thickening and trabeculated new bone formation within the sinuses.

A survey is given of etiology, diagnosis and treatment of maxillary sinusitis from dental origin. Periapical infection and oro-antral fistula are among the most frequent causes. Removal of the dental origin is of primary importance and sometimes the sole removal of the odontogenic cause is a sufficient therapy. On the other hand closure of oro-antral fistula without simultaneous cure of the concomitant sinusitis is of no use.

Our study was designed to examine the motility and ultrastructure of cilia from the nose of patients with Kartagener's syndrome. A patient with the clinical syndrome of cystic fibrosis characterized by chronic pulmonary disease, infection with mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa, sinusitis, nasal polyposis, abnormal pancreatic bicarbonate response to secretin stimulation, but normal levels of trypsin and chymotrypsin in the duodenal drainage, and a sibling with autopsy-documented cystic fibrosis, is described. Sweat chloride ranged from 20 to 44 meq/liter and sweat sodium from 36 to 55 meq/liter. A surgical technique has been developed that permits reversible vascular isolation of both carotid sinuses in the conscious dog. Seven dogs so prepared were studied over periods of 4-12 wk. Repeatable stimulus-response curves relating arterial blood pressure to carotid sinus pressure were obtained for sinus pressures of 40-240 mmHg. Two studies gave evidence that the ability of the carotid baroreceptors to influence arterial pressure was not or was minimally affected by the surgical dissection. In 10 dogs one sinus was surgically prepared; 3 wk later the dogs were anesthetized and vagotomized.

We reviewed our entire experience with composite graft replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve during a 63 month interval ending in December, 1979. Anuloaortic ectasia was the most common indication for operation, followed by aortic dissection (acute and chronic). Hospital mortality was 5% and was related to the preoperative functional status and the duration of intraoperative myocardial ischemia.
