Chronic hypertrophic polypoid rhinosinusitis.

Chronic hypertrophic polypoid rhinosinusitis is a condition in which the mucous membrane lining the nose and paranasal sinuses becomes markedly hypertrophied, and nasal polyps become evident. Superimposed infection is common. Bony erosion, sometimes marked, may also result. Because of the alterations in bone, the condition may be mistaken for other more serious lesions.

Hemangiopericytoma-like intranasal tumors. A clinicopathologic study of 23 cases.

The clinical, microscopic, and gross pathologic features of 23 cases of intranasal hemangiopericytoma-like tumors are reviewed and studied. When in the nasal cavity, these lesions often originated in a paranasal sinus and extended into the nasal cavity secondarily. They occurred most commonly in adults in the sixth and seventh decades of life; there was no significant sex predilection. Twenty-two of the 23 patients were Caucasian. These patients most commonly had symptoms of nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Clinically the lesions were generally thought to represent allergic polyps. Although ap

[Clinical aspects of hypertrophic lesions of the sinusal mucosa].

Ninety-five cases mucous hypertrophy of the maxillary sinus spreading over several years are examined in this study. They are made conspicuous by radiotomografies. If an hypertrophy of a sinous mucous is often silent or is accompanied with a minor symptomatology (pharynx or ear troubles), in the other cases, it is accompanied with strong headaches. A simple exaeresis of the polype without instrumental operation in the ostium region leads to their disappearance. This rather surprising result allows us to wonder if an ostial dyspermeability is sufficient to explain the sinous headache mechanism.

Vidian neurectomy.

The author presents his experience with vidian neurectomy. 30 cases have been operated; 18 had bilateral nasal-sinus polyposis and 12 vasomotor rhinitis. The results are presented. The patients with bilateral nasal-sinus-polyposis were operated by bilateral polypectomy cleaning the sinuses according to the Ermiro de Lima technique and unilateral vidian neurectomy was simultaneously performed. On this side the results obtained were excellent in comparation with the other one. The surgical technique is explained and some pathogenetic considerations are discussed.

Endoscopic findings of maxillary sinus after middle face fractures.

Of 93 patients with fractures of the mid-face who appeared for postoperative check-up, 25 were selected by chance for sinuscopy of the maxillary sinus. Chronic inflammatory mucosal changes occurred in 35 per cent; other pathological sequelae included solitary polyps, mucocele, scarry synechia, and prolapse of orbital fat and osteoma. In spite of these findings, all patients were free of complaints. The primary surgical revision was therefore declined in favour of a waiting attitude. For the diagnostic clarification of late complications, sinuscopy with Hopkin's optics offers a simple and effic
