Effectiveness of septoplasty compared to medical management in adults with obstruction associated with a deviated nasal septum: the NAIROS RCT.

BACKGROUND: The indications for septoplasty are practice-based, rather than evidence-based. In addition, internationally accepted guidelines for the management of nasal obstruction associated with nasal septal deviation are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of septoplasty, with or without turbinate reduction, compared with medical management, in the management of nasal obstruction associated with a deviated nasal septum. DESIGN: This was a multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing septoplasty, with or without turbinat

Optimizing Postoperative Care in Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty: A Review of the Role of Nasal Packing and Alternatives in Complication Management.

Rhinoplasty, a common surgical procedure for nose reshaping, demands meticulous preoperative evaluation and precise execution. When coupled with septoplasty to address medical issues stemming from a deviated nasal septum, these procedures can lead to noteworthy postoperative complications. These encompass early issues like epistaxis and hematoma, as well as long-term challenges such as scarring and aesthetic deformities. Strategies like steroids and tranexamic acid are employed to prevent and manage these complications. A contentious aspect in postoperative care is the use of nasal packing. Wh

Nasal congestion caused by long-term retention of a nasal foreign body near the orbit: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Nasal trauma presents a risk of foreign body invasion into the nasal cavity. However, in the early treatment stage of nasal trauma, patients and doctors are not always aware of possible foreign body invasion, resulting in delayed detection. We describe the case of an adult patient admitted to the hospital due to left nasal congestion accompanied by yellow, purulent, and bloody discharge. CASE SUMMARY: Consultation with the patient revealed a history of nasal trauma 30 years prior that did not receive thorough examinations and imaging during treatment, resulting in a glass fragment

Mucormycosis in an Immunocompetent Patient Recovering From Dengue Fever.

Mucormycosis is a rare yet aggressive fungal infection. Despite its rarity, India has experienced a surge in cases during the post-COVID-19 era. The high mortality rate associated with this infection necessitates early diagnosis, intervention, and aggressive treatment. Typically, it is observed in immunocompromised patients, where the disease progresses rapidly and leads to unfavorable outcomes. However, occurrences in previously healthy individuals are not uncommon. Dengue has been occasionally associated with mucormycosis in the post-recovery phase. This case report highlights the importance

Conquering Phagophobia: A Journey to Overcoming the Fear of Choking.

Phagophobia is a rare and debilitating mental health condition characterized by an intense fear of choking solid food or liquids. Usually there is no underlying anatomical or physiological abnormalities. Choking phobia can lead to the avoidance of solid foods and liquids. This can give rise to other psychiatric disorders like major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. Only few case reports of choking phobia are available in the literature. Here we present the case of a middle-aged man, with a 10-year history of fear of choking, starting after an aspiration episode and later maintained by

Quantifying the Domino Effect of Septoplasty on Eustachian Tube Function and Nasal Resistance in Patients With Chronic Otitis Media: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Eustachian tube dysfunction is characterized by insufficient dilation, leading to secondary pathologies in the middle ear. By comparing pre- and post-operative grades of Eustachian tube function and nasal resistance measurements, this study seeks to determine if septoplasty can improve Eustachian tube function in cases where nasal septal deviation is likely to cause mechanical dysfunction. We also aim to validate the Jain Bhalerao endoscopic classification of nasal septal deviation by assessing its utility in identifying septal deviations at a higher risk of causing Eustachian tube
