This technical report presents a novel CBCT-Based Grading System for Oropharyngeal Airway Narrowing, designed to provide clinicians with a standardised, objective method to assess oropharyngeal airway narrowing using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). The grading system is developed based on the least surface area on axial section measurements/minimal cross-sectional area (MCA) on CBCT. It classifies oropharyngeal narrowing into five distinct grades (Grade 0 to 4). Each grade also has subcategories that correspond to specific anatomical regions-distal to the soft palate (P), distal to the b

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophy of adenoids is a common condition in childhood, resulting in obstructive symptoms such as sleep apnea, snoring, and rhinosinusitis. Adenotonsillectomy is recommended to improve prognosis and quality of life. This case-control study compared facial angles and lip position related to dentofacial and mouth growth in symptomatic children with adenoid hypertrophy and asymptomatic control groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included children aged 5 to 7 who presented with obstructive symptoms and confirmed severe adenoid hypertrophy in lateral neck radiography. Standa

INTRODUCTION: Correct breathing is a fundamental condition for adequate vocal production. Respiratory dynamics are able to modify the growth of facial mass and lingual posture, i.e., of the skull, the mandibular one. For this reason, infant mouth breathing can cause hoarseness.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the actual changes in the characteristics of the voice and articulation of language in a group of subjects affected by adenotonsillar hypertrophy (grade 3-4), with frequent episodes of pharyngo-tonsillitis who underwent adenotonsillectomy. Our study included 20 children-10 boys and 1

Mouth breathing is one of the most common deleterious oral habits in children. It often results from upper airway obstruction, making the air enter completely or partially through oral cavity. In addition to nasal obstruction caused by various kinds of nasal diseases, the pathological hypertrophy of adenoids and/or tonsils is often the main etiologic factor of mouth breathing in children. Uncorrected mouth breathing can result in abnormal dental and maxillofacial development and affect the health of dentofacial system. Mouth breathers may present various types of growth patterns and malocclusi

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Generally, the blockage of upper respiratory tract in children is seen with the hypertrophy of adenoids and tonsils. Normally for patients with adenoid hypertrophy (AH), Adenoidectomy with or without Tonsillectomy is carried out, however it has its own complications like haemorrhage and recurrence of adenoid tissue. Consequently, therapeutic approach has increased extraordinary consideration rather than surgical procedure. The inflammatory process proposed for AH has prompted the utilization of anti-inflammatory drugs to treat this issue. The objective of this study wa

AIM: To study the efficacy and safety of treatment of exudative (secretory) otitis media (EOM) in children of early age taking into account the anatomical features of the auditory tube.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined and treated 30 children (51 ears) by balloon dilatation (BD) at the age of 1 to 3 years, with recurrent EOM (more than 6 months). The 21st child was diagnosed with a 2-sided process, and 9 with a one-sided process. All patients have previously unsuccessfully used conservative methods of treatment. According to the results of the examination and treatment, the children were div

Saffold virus (SAFV) is classified into the Cardiovirus genus of the Picornaviridae family. Up to now, eleven genotypes have been identified however, their clinical significance remains unclear. Here, we investigated the presence of SAFV in asymptomatic patients admitted for adenoidectomy. A total of 70 adenoid tissue samples were collected from children with clinical symptoms caused by hypertrophy of adenoids but without symptoms of airway infection. Samples were investigated for SAFV by RT-nested PCR and sequence analysis. Eleven of 70 (15.7%) samples were positive for SAFV. Nasopharyngeal s

Otitis media with effusion is a common cause of diminished hearing in children younger than 12 years. Hypertrophy of adenoids is one of the commonest etiologies of this condition. It has been mentioned that with increased size of the adenoid tissue, the more likely the incidence of fluid in the middle ear. The aim of this study was to find whether there is a correlation between adenoid size, tympanometric findings, and type of fluid in the middle ear irrespective of disease duration. This is a prospective study done on 100 pediatric patients (12 years and less) presented with chronic otitis me

INTRODUCTION: One of the major causes of pediatric morbidity today at the community level is infection involving the ear, nose, and throat. Maximum of these patients respond well initially on general regular medications, but then recurrent complaints are not very uncommon. One of the major causes for such recurrence is hypertrophy of adenoids, the evaluation of which requires a battery of sophisticated investigative tools and expertise which are lacking at the community level. The aim of the study is to evaluate various symptoms related to adenoid hypertrophy and its correlation to the size of

Hypertrophy of adenoids is usually caused by repeated throat infections, especially viral and bacterial infections, that in microscopic examination reveal reactive lymphoid follicular hyperplasia. Herein, we present an 11-year-old boy who developed hearing loss in his left ear three months before admission, and in direct examination the adenoids were hypertrophied. Histopathological study of the resected adenoid revealed caseating granulomatous inflammation. Based on histopathological and clinical findings, primary tuberculosis of adenoids was suggested which was confirmed by PCR.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Children often present with enlargement of the nasopharyngeal soft tissues, which is usually due to benign hypertrophy of adenoids. The objective of this report is to emphasize that, although rare, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) does occur in children and can be diagnosed reliably when certain key radiographic features are recognized.
METHODS: The presenting scans of 11 patients with biopsy proven NPC were reviewed retrospectively by a CAQ-certified neuroradiologist. The age range was 12-17 years (median 15 years). Fifteen scans were reviewed, including 8 CT scans of t

The adenoids and tonsils are thought to be essential parts of the system protecting organism against pathogens invading the upper respiratory tracts. Human adenoids and tonsils are known to be immunologically reactive lymphoid organs, which manifest specific antibodies and B and T cells activity in response to variety of antigens carrying out the functions of humoral and cellular immunity. The purpose of the study was to observe the changes in systemic immunity in children with hypertrophy of adenoids and tonsils treated in Department of Laryngology, Children's Hospital in Warsaw in period 199

UNLABELLED: About 15% of severe Hemophilia A (HA) patients exhibit occasional bleeding, without requiring continuous therapy. Since platelets are critical for thrombus formation, this study investigated whether platelets are activated in severe HA with mild bleeding, and if so, do they contribute to alter the clinical severity. 38 severe HA patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional investigation and classified as severe or mild bleeders based on the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Bleeding Assessment Tool (ISTH-BAT) score. Platelet activation was evaluated using platel
