Parallel comparison of T cell and B cell subpopulations of adenoid hypertrophy and tonsil hypertrophy of children.

The adenoids and tonsils are important immune organs of the nasopharynx that often become hypertrophic in childhood because of recurrent pathogen infection. However, the differences in the immune microenvironment of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and tonsil hypertrophy (TH) are unclear. Here, we show the epidemiological characteristics and peripheral blood cell indices of 1209 pediatric patients (1-15 years old) diagnosed with AH, and find that AH is often accompanied by TH and characterized by specific changes in immune cell types. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis show that 12 paired AH and TH s

Microbiological profile and immunological changes in pediatric chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy before and after adenotonsillectomy.

Tonsils play a crucial role in the immune systems, and infections that involve them among the most common human illnesses, particularly in children. Recurrent adenotonsillitis prevails in such age and accounts for the primary reason for visits to primary care physicians. Adenotonsillectomy represents the most regularly performed surgical operations in children. While the effects of chronic adenotonsillitis (chronic inflammatory hypertrophy) on immune systems before and after adenotonsillectomy in children are not fully understood. This study aimed to showcase the bacterial pathogens associated

Association between body roundness index and obstructive sleep apnea: a cross-sectional study from the NHANES (2005-2008 to 2015-2020).

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to obesity, and the body roundness index (BRI) is an innovative measure of obesity that more accurately reflects visceral and total body fat. The relationship between BRI and the likelihood of OSA is unclear, so we aimed to investigate the association between BRI and the prevalence of OSA. METHODS: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES; 2005-2008 to 2015-2020) to conduct a cross-sectional study involving 24,476 individuals aged 18 years or older. OSA was assessed using three standardized NHANES questi

Suspected pediatric sleep disordered breathing - when do we perform polysomnography?

OBJECTIVE: Snoring is common in children and diagnosing sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and assessing its severity is unreliable without polysomnography (PSG), a costly procedure that is not always readily available. Our objective was to identify those factors that influence the decision to refer children for PSG. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 1267 children aged 0-16 years with suspected SDB and/or adenotonsillar hypertrophy. RESULTS: A total of 212 children (16.5%) underwent PSG. The likelihood of PSG being performed increased with age (OR 1.14, p <.001, 95% CI 1.08-1.20), male
