Changes in the pharyngeal and nasal microbiota in pediatric patients with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

UNLABELLED: The present study aimed to investigate the pharyngeal and nasal microbiota composition in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy (AH) and assess longitudinal alterations in both microbiota after a probiotic oral spray treatment. A cohort of 57 AH patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to the probiotic and placebo groups for a 5-month treatment course. Pharyngeal and nasal swabs were collected before and after treatment and analyzed by 16S rRNA-based metataxonomics and axenic cultures for pathobiont identification. 16S rRNA sequences from pharyngeal and nasal swabs of 65 hea

Differences in salivary microbiome among children with tonsillar hypertrophy and/or adenoid hypertrophy.

Children diagnosed with severe tonsillar hypertrophy display discernible craniofacial features distinct from those with adenoid hypertrophy, prompting illuminating considerations regarding microbiota regulation in this non-inflammatory condition. The present study aimed to characterize the salivary microbial profile in children with tonsillar hypertrophy and explore the potential functionality therein. A total of 112 children, with a mean age of 7.79 ± 2.41 years, were enrolled and divided into the tonsillar hypertrophy (TH) group (n = 46, 8.4 ± 2.5 years old), adenoid hypertrophy (AH) group (

The bidirectional interplay of obstructive sleep apnea and viral respiratory infections in children: A novel opportunity for primary prevention.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and viral respiratory infections are highly prevalent conditions in children and a major cause of respiratory morbidity in this age group. Severe viral respiratory infections are a known risk factor for pediatric OSA, which is primarily caused by hypertrophy of upper airway lymphoid tissues (adenoids and tonsils). This review examines recent progress in understanding early-life development of lymphoid tissues in the human upper airway, with a particular focus on how respiratory viruses may influence this process and contribute to OSA pathogenesis. It also explores

Association of adenoid hypertrophy and clinical parameters with preoperative polygraphy in pediatric patients undergoing adenoidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the most frequent cause for obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) in children. In patients with small tonsils and where adenoid size cannot be assessed, the indication for adenoidectomy often relies on clinical symptoms. However, data on the association of clinical parameters and adenoid hypertrophy with OSAS severity in children undergoing an adenoidectomy is sparse. AIM: To investigate the correlation of patient characteristics, adenoid hypertrophy, and clinical symptoms with OSAS severity in pediatric patients indicated for an adenoidectomy. METHODS: We

Adenoid facies: a long-term vicious cycle of mouth breathing, adenoid hypertrophy, and atypical craniofacial development.

Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is characterized by pathological hyperplasia of the nasopharyngeal tonsils, a component of Waldryer's ring, which represents the first immune defense of the upper respiratory tract. The pathogenic factors contributing to AH remain to be comprehensively investigated to date. Although some studies suggest that environmental exposure to smoke and allergens, respiratory tract infections, and hormonal influences likely contribute to the development of AH, further research is necessary for fully elucidating the effects of these factors on the onset and progression of AH. AH

Elaboration of selected respiratory system diseases in children in the pediatric hospital Bielsko-Biala In years 2015-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory tract infections in children are an interdisciplinary problem that pediatricians, allergists, laryngologists and immunologists encounter on a daily basis. In the youngest children, these diseases are caused by the structure of the respiratory tract, which is shorter and narrower than in an adult, as well as the immaturity of the immune system. Among all children under 5 years of age hospitalized due to respiratory diseases, 20% of cases are acute respiratory infections. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to discuss selected respiratory diseases in children aged 0-18

The hyoid bone position and upper airway morphology among children with and without adenotonsillar hypertrophy: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) is a major cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), potentially impacting craniofacial growth and development. Currently, whether children with ATH exhibit distinctive hyoid bone position and upper airway morphology remains uncertain. This research aimed to compare the hyoid bone position and upper airway morphology of children with and without ATH. METHODS: A total of 199 children aged 6-8 years were recruited for the study, and their pre-treatment lateral cephalograms were obtained. The size of the adenoids and tonsils on the lateral cep

Changes in the oral and nasal microbiota in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Several clinical studies have demonstrated that pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with dysbiosis of airway mucosal microbiota. However, how oral and nasal microbial diversity, composition, and structure are altered in pediatric OSA has not been systemically explored. METHODS: 30 polysomnography-confirmed OSA patients with adenoid hypertrophy, and 30 controls who did not have adenoid hypertrophy, were enrolled. Swabs from four surface oral tissue sites (tongue base, soft palate, both palatine tonsils, and adenoid) and one nasal swab from both anterior nares were

Alterations in Amygdala/Hippocampal Volume Ratios in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Caused by Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND Intermittent hypoxemia can cause changes in certain brain structures. However, in pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH), there is only limited information on the effect of ATH-induced OSA on brain structures. This study sought to investigate alterations in amygdala and hippocampal volumes in children with OSA by ATH. MATERIAL AND METHODS Magnetic resonance imaging scans were applied in children who had ATH-induced OSA (ATH/OSA) and in healthy children. Amygdala and hippocampus volumes and adenoid sizes were measured on MRI v

Age-related hypertrophy of adenoid and tonsil with its relationship with craniofacial morphology.

BACKGROUND: When analyzing the relationship between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and craniofacial morphology, researchers generally regarded hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils as a whole. It remains unclear whether different enlarged sites of pharyngeal lymphoid tissue would correlate with multiple craniofacial subtypes. We hypothesized there would be craniofacial subtypes correlated with different locations of hypertrophied adenoid and tonsil. METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 466 children (171 boys and 295 girls, aged 12.27 ± 2.69 years). They were divided into fou
