Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Laryngological Outcomes in Patients with Non-Head and Neck Cancer.

OBJECTIVES: As immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) utilization increases in cancer treatment, immune-related adverse events continue to be recognized. Voice, swallowing, and oral dysfunction substantially impair quality of life and treatment tolerance in cancer patients, but the laryngological risks of ICI therapy remain unclear. We compared outcomes for these functions after ICI versus non-ICI antineoplastic therapies. METHODS: Using the TriNetX research network, we identified adults with non-head and neck malignancies treated with ICIs versus non-ICI systemic antineoplastics. To isolate off-t

[Features of the laryngeal mucosa microbiota in patients with chronic hyperplastic laryngitis (literature review)].

The literature review analyzed the data concerning studies of the microbiome of the laryngeal mucosa in patients with chronic hyperplastic laryngitis. It remains a matter of discussion whether the inflammatory process in the larynx is primary with subsequent dysbiosis and excessive growth of pathogenic microorganisms, or whether changes in the structure of the normal microbial landscape become an inducer of the disease. The article reflects the results of basic research on the role of bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens detected on the mucous membrane of the larynx in patients with chronic

Voice Disorders Across Age Subgroups in the Geriatric Population: A Retrospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although the literature indicates an increased incidence of voice disorders among older adults, data regarding the etiological distribution of dysphonia across different age subgroups remain limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the distribution of voice disorder etiologies among dysphonic patients aged 65 years and older, stratified by age subgroup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged 65 years and older presenting with voice complaints were stratified into 3 age subgroups: 65 to 74, 75 to 84, and ≥85 years. The etiological diagnoses of voice disorders were cl

Human Turbinate Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Derived Exosomes Alleviate PM2.5-Induced Pyroptosis via Promoting Mitophagy in Human Vocal Fold Fibroblasts.

Chronic laryngitis is a persistent inflammatory disorder that has recently been linked to air pollution. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major air pollutant capable of inducing pyroptosis, a caspase-1-dependent inflammatory form of programmed cell death characterized by gasdermin D cleavage, plasma membrane rupture, and the release of proinflammatory cytokines. However, the mechanisms underlying PM2.5-induced pyroptosis in the larynx and the potential therapeutic strategies remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of human turbinate mesenchymal stromal cell-de

Genetic architecture of 67 oral diseases and their links to systemic diseases.

Oral and craniofacial diseases are common, yet their genetic basis and links to systemic health are incompletely understood. We performed genome-wide association analyses of 67 oral phenotypes in 500,348 FinnGen participants, identifying 102 genome-wide significant loci, including 45 previously unreported associations. 48 loci remained significant after category-level Bonferroni correction. Fine-mapping revealed 14 coding variants, such as a missense variant in USP31 for caries and in MANBA for oral leukoplakia, and a stop-gained variant in GPNMB for temporomandibular disorders. Human leukocyt

[Wrist-ankle acupuncture in treatment of chronic laryngitis based on "yang transforms qi, yin constitutes form"].

Chronic laryngitis is a kind of chronic inflammation of larynx characterized primarily by hoarseness. Its main pathological mechanisms involve insufficiency of yang for transforming qi and the internal production of phlegm-damp, or inadequacy of yin for constituting forms and yin deficiency of lung and kidney. The team applies wrist-ankle acupuncture under the guidance of the theory, "yang transforms qi, yin constitutes forms". The key operational principle of acupuncture is to stimulate the sites pertaining to yang when yang is deficient, while stimulate the sites pertaining to yin when yin i

Effects of otolaryngological diseases on sleep quality, anxiety, and depression: a multicenter observational study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of otolaryngological diseases on sleep quality, anxiety, and depression has garnered significant attention. However, research has primarily focused on unveiling the effects of only one or two specific diseases, without analyzing the impact of multiple concurrent diseases. Furthermore, investigation into the interaction mechanisms among these factors has been lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study reveals the effects of different otolaryngological diseases on sleep quality, anxiety, and depression, and investigates their interaction mechanisms. METHODS: In total, 2,080 patient

[Multifactorial genesis of chronic laryngitis - impact of inhaled corticosteroids].

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are used as guideline-based therapy for bronchial asthma as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Adverse effects of this drug therapy include oropharyngeal and laryngeal candidiasis and chronic laryngitis. As a prodrug, the inhaled corticosteroid ciclesonide exerts its active effect in the lungs. Reduction of oropharyngeal candidiasis has already been described under ciclesonide and a possible positive effect on laryngeal mucosa should now be tested.Videolaryngoscopic and -stroboscopic recordings and voice analyses were retrospectively assessed af

Clinical characteristics and histopathologic features of movable inflammatory laryngeal masses in five dogs.

Information on inflammatory laryngeal masses in dogs remains extremely limited. We aimed to describe the clinical and histopathological features and outcomes of five dogs with bilateral, movable inflammatory laryngeal masses. Stridor was a common clinical sign, followed by dysphonia and snoring, all of which were mild. The presence of movable masses was confirmed in all dogs through fluoroscopic or echolaryngographic evaluation. Laryngeal endoscopy identified two masses in each dog, consistent with everted laryngeal saccules. Surgical excision was performed in all dogs, and no recurrence was o

Divergent Risk Patterns of Upper Airway Inflammation in Autoimmune Diseases: A Nationwide Retrospective Analysis.

ObjectivesWhile autoimmune diseases (ADs) are known for systemic inflammation, their specific association with upper airway inflammation (UAI) has not been extensively characterized. We aim to investigate the associations between various ADs and subsequent UAI development in a large, national cohort.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study utilized de-identified electronic health records from TriNetX, a national collaborative database. Adolescent and adult patients with a diagnosis of 1 or more ADs were identified. A 12 month washout period was implemented to exclude preexisting UAI. The primary

Perception of Disordered Voice: Reaction Time, Accuracy, and Neural Processing.

UNLABELLED: In many professional settings, such as emergency dispatch, aviation, healthcare, and the military, voice is used to deliver short, precise instructions. Voice disorders can affect both professional voice users and listeners, altering speech perception, listening effort, and task performance. This study investigated the impact of disordered voice on behavioral performance (reaction time and accuracy) and neural processing (as measured by event-related potentials, ERPs) in short spoken instructions. METHODS: Forty-three right-handed, healthy, Latvian-speaking university students (21

[New regulations on the connection of voice disorders with the profession].

UNLABELLED: The voice is an important indicator of human health, since the state of voice function is related to the activity of the main body systems. Impaired vocal function significantly changes relationships with people for the worse, makes it difficult or completely impedes the performance of professional duties. The main causes of phonation-related diseases of the larynx, dysphonia, is a systematic overload of the voice. OBJECTIVE: Analysis of modern regulations for the examination of the connection of the disease with the profession and professional suitability in diseases of the laryn

Laryngeal tuberculosis presenting as an isolated vocal cord lesion in an immunocompetent patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal tuberculosis (TB), once a common complication of pulmonary TB, has become rare in the antibiotic era but remains an important diagnostic consideration in endemic regions, particularly in patients presenting with persistent hoarseness. While historically associated with advanced pulmonary disease, isolated laryngeal TB can occur even in immunocompetent individuals without systemic symptoms or radiographic evidence of lung involvement. Due to its nonspecific presentation—often mimicking malignancy or chronic laryngitis—misdiagnosis is common, delaying appropriate treatment.

Effects of Intragastric Helicobacter pylori Distribution on Clinical Presentation, Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Esophageal Manometry, and pH-Impedance Metrics.

Background: The relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) remains a topic of ongoing debate. In particular, the intragastric distribution of H. pylori-whether localized in the antrum or corpus-may influence gastric acid secretion and esophageal physiology in different ways. However, its potential effects on esophageal motility and reflux parameters have not been comprehensively evaluated using combined diagnostic tools. This study aimed to assess whether H. pylori positivity, based on its histologically confirmed intragastric loca

Clinical significance of type IV vascularization of laryngeal lesions according to the Ni classification.

BACKGROUND: Scattered, small, dot-like intraepithelial papillary capillary loops (IPCLs) represent type IV epithelial vascularization according to "Ni classification" and are considered to be nonmalignant. According to the European Laryngological Society classification, these loops are malignant vascular changes. This contradiction has high clinical importance; therefore, clarification of the clinical significance of type IV vascularization according to the Ni classification is needed. METHODS: The study was performed between June 2015 and December 2022. All recruited patients (n = 434) were

Laryngeal Leishmaniasis: A Neglected, Emerging Disease in Northern Italy.

Leishmaniasis represents an emerging public health issue in Mediterranean countries. The incidence of this condition has progressively risen in Northern Italy due to the growing number of immunocompromised people and probably due to climate changes. We hereby describe a case of relapsing laryngeal leishmaniasis in a female immunocompetent patient, presenting as aspecific chronic laryngitis. She was affected by severe asthma treated by inhaled steroid therapy, likely responsible for the parasite's diffusion through a locus minori resistentiae. The aspecific clinical presentation led to a delaye
