Gene Expression Differences Between Vocal Fold Polyps and Reinke's Edema.

BACKGROUND: Vocal fold polyps and Reinke's edema are among the benign vocal cord lesions. Although they have different pathogeneses, their histological features are similar, making their diagnosis challenging. This study aims to investigate gene expression differences between Reinke's edema and vocal fold polyps to enhance diagnosis and provide insights into their pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed intraoperative tissue samples from the true vocal folds of patients diagnosed with either Reinke's edema or vocal fold polyps. Using RT-qPCR, we compared th

Cavernous hemangioma of the vocal cord: a case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal haemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumours. In adults, the cavernous form is more common. Due to their appearance, they are frequently confused with vocal fold polyps or, less commonly, with malignant lesions. MATHERIAL AND METHODS: We present a descriptive retrospective study of six patients diagnosed with cavernous haemangiomas of the vocal cord, histopathologically confirmed between 2006 and 2023 at Hospital Universitario Donostia. RESULTS: All patients were referred for dysphonia. In most cases, the initial diagnosis was vocal fold polyp. Five patients underwen

A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Laryngeal Myxoma Masquerading as a Vocal Cord Polyp.

Myxoma is a rare benign tumor of mesenchymal origin and is very rarely seen in the larynx. Because of its appearance, it is often mistaken for a vocal cord polyp. We report the case of a 19-year-old female who presented with hoarseness of voice for 1 month. Laryngoscopic examination showed a small polypoidal lesion on the vocal cord. The lesion was surgically removed. Histopathological examination showed sparse spindle-shaped cells in abundant myxoid stroma without atypia or mitotic activity, confirming the diagnosis of myxoma. Complete excision was curative. This case highlights the importanc

Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Benign Laryngeal Lesions: Insights from a Decade of Experience in a Tertiary Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Benign laryngeal lesions, characterized by non-cancerous growths in the larynx, significantly impact voice quality and respiratory function. These lesions, which include vocal cord polyps, nodules, papillomas, and cysts, often result from factors such as vocal abuse, viral infections, and chronic inflammation. While studies on benign laryngeal lesions are well-documented globally, data specific to Northern Nigeria remains sparse. This study aims to analyze the demographics, clinical features, treatment modalities, and outcomes of benign laryngeal lesions over a decade in a tertiary

Vocal Cord Disorders.

Vocal cord disorders present with a variety of symptoms including dysphonia, respiratory symptoms, and stridor. When evaluating symptoms, a complete history and through head, neck, and neurologic examinations are necessary. If dysphonia persists for greater than 4 w or there is associated smoking, then larngoscopy is necessary to evaluate the vocal folds. Empiric treatment of dysphonia is not recommended without direct visualization of the vocal folds. Most masses of the vocal folds are benign and resolve with voice hygiene and speech therapy. Surgery is reserved for persistent symptomatic nod

Comprehensive Single-Cell RNA Atlas of Human Laryngeal Normal, Preneoplastic, and Tumorigenic States.

PURPOSE: The mechanisms driving the progression of vocal cord leukoplakia (VCL) to laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) remain unclear, posing a significant barrier to the effective prevention, early diagnosis, and targeted treatment of LSCC. Therefore, it is essential to characterize the cellular microenvironmental differences between VCL and LSCC at single-cell resolution. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In the study, we conducted single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics on surgical tissue specimens obtained from 36 patients diagnosed with vocal cord polyps (VCP), VCL, and LSCC.
