Patients with vocal cord polyps commonly present with symptoms of hoarseness. Although rare, large polyps can cause shortness of breath and stridor and should be included in the differential for patients with airway obstruction. Dysphonia or hoarseness can be a symptom of underlying disease, such as head and neck cancer. This case illustrates the importance of prompt and accurate diagnosis in a patient with persistent symptoms and a history of smoking. Obtaining a laryngoscopy is crucial to appropriately evaluate the larynx. Proper visualization of the laryngeal structures will help direct pat

INTRODUCTION: Benign and malignant vocal fold lesions (VFLs) are growths that occur on the vocal folds. However, the treatments for these two types of lesions differ significantly. Therefore, it is imperative to use a multidisciplinary approach to properly recognize suspicious lesions. This study aimed to determine the important acoustic characteristics specific to benign and malignant VFLs.
METHODS: The acoustic model of voice quality was utilized to measure various acoustic parameters in 157 participants, including individuals with normal, benign, and malignant conditions. The study compris

OBJECTIVE: Benign laryngeal lesions have traditionally been treated through suspension laryngoscopy under general anesthesia (GA). Recently, the development of operative videoendoscopes coupled with photoangiolytic lasers has allowed clinicians to treat these conditions in the outpatient clinic. We report our experience in the office-based (OB) setting for the treatment of patients affected by vocal fold polyps (VFPs) and Reinke's edema (RE), comparing it to patients treated under GA.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients affected by VFP or RE. A 445 nm diode blue laser

Long-term voice abuse or sudden vocal fold microvascular disruption may lead to injury and subsequent repair/remodeling in the vocal fold mucosa. Periostin is known to be involved in airway remodeling and also in various otolaryngological diseases. D-β-aspartic acid is the major isomer of D-aspartic acid found in elderly tissue. In this study we investigated the expression and the role of D-β-aspartic acid and periostin in the formation of vocal fold polyps. The expression patterns of D-β-aspartic acid and periostin in 36 surgical specimens of vocal fold polyps from 36 patients were investigat

BACKGROUND: Sulcus vocalis (SV) is a longitudinal groove in the free edge of the true vocal cord. It may impair phonation with incomplete glottic closure, phonasthenia and hoarseness. This study aims to detect a correlation between benign vocal cord lesions and the incidence of the SV.
METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on patients who underwent transoral surgery due to benign vocal fold lesions and were selected according to strict criteria. Patients were divided into a group with sulcus vocalis (Group wSV) and a group without sulcus vocalis (Group w/oSV). The possible correlatio

Small biopsies in the larynx can make a definitive diagnosis challenging due to the sampling or tangential sectioning. The differential diagnosis can be divided into mucosal lesions (squamous papillomas, intraepithelial dysplasia, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma) or submucosal lesions (vocal cord polyps/nodules, amyloidosis, granular cell tumor, rhabdomyoma, neuroendocrine neoplasms, salivary gland tumors, and cartilaginous tumors). Diagnostic criteria (both morphologic and immunohistochemical) are reviewed to arrive at a diagnosis even on small biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of benign lesions of the vocal fold (BLVF) is still challenging. The analysis of the acoustic signals through the implementation of machine learning models can be a viable solution aimed at offering support for clinical diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a support vector machine was trained and cross-validated (10-fold cross-validation) using 138 features extracted from the acoustic signals of 418 patients with polyps, nodules, oedema, and cysts. The model's performance was presented as accuracy and average F1-score. The results were also analysed in mal

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold polyps (VFPs) are the most common benign laryngeal lesions that require surgery and are routinely managed by microlaryngoscopy (MLS) under general anaesthesia. Prior to introduction of MLS, VFPs were removed using indirect laryngoscopic surgery (ILS) in local anaesthesia, a procedure that required substantial surgical skill to operate with an unmagnified mirror view of the larynx. With the adoption of wireless endoscopy equipment and personal computers, we tried to simplify this technique so that it can be easily performed in the office. This study aimed to assess the eff
