[Case-control survey on relationship between laryngopharyngeal reflux and vocal fold polyps].

Objective: To investigate whether laryngopharyngeal reflux(LPR) is an independent risk factor for vocal fold polyps and to analyze the potential mechanism. Methods: Case control survey was designed. Subjects who came to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from September 2018 to December 2019, including 152 cases with vocal fold polyps and 176 cases with normal vocal folds, were selected. All the subjects filled in a questionnaire and were assessed by the reflux symptom index (RSI) and the reflux finding sc

With photoangiolytic lasers like KTP (Potassium-Titanyl-Phosphate, 532 nm) lasers or the new "blue" laser (445 nm), even the smallest vessels and capillaries within the vocal fold can be treated without destroying the covering epithelium. This enables effective treatment of benign and malignant sub- and intraepithelial lesions of the vocal folds such as papilloma, edema, polyps, leukoplakia, dysplasia and capillary vessels while preserving the vibratory properties of the different layers of the lamina propria. Because photoangiolytic laser light can be routed through tiny glass fibers, office-

Association of pepsin and DNA damage in laryngopharyngeal reflux-related vocal fold polyps.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate if laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) plays a role as a risk factor for vocal fold polyps (VFPs), and if pepsin is associated with higher oxidative DNA damage of VFPs in the presence of LPR. METHODS: Thirty patients with VFPs were recruited between 2017 and 2018. Prior to surgery, a laryngoscopy was performed on all subjects to evaluate VFPs. Polyp tissue and saliva samples were obtained scrupulously. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was performed for pathologic analysis. Immunohistochemistry and ELISA were used to detect pepsin in tissue and saliva of VFP patients

Vocal Fold Collision Speed in vivo: The Effect of Loudness.

Mechanical impact stress on the vocal fold surface, particularly when excessive, has been postulated to cause the so-called phonotraumatic tissue lesions, such as nodules and polyps. The collision stress between the vocal folds depends on the vocal fold velocity at the time of impact. Hence this vocal fold collision speed is a relevant parameter when considering biomechanical economy of phonation, especially in voice professionals needing a louder voice than normal. Combining a precise photometric measurement of glottal area and simultaneous measurements of translaryngeal impedance (electroglo

Apolipoprotein M inhibits proliferation and migration of larynx carcinoma cells.

Prior studies have shown that apolipoprotein M (APOM) is involved in the development of some cancers. Here we investigated the effects of APOM on larynx cancer (LC). 20 patients with vocal cord polyps and 18 patients with LC were included in this study. The protein and mRNA levels of the samples were analysed using the Wes-ProteinSimple system (or traditional Western blot) and PCR technology, respectively. APOM protein level in cancer tissues was lower than that in paracarcinomatous (P = 0.0003) and polyp tissues (P < 0.0001). APOM overexpression significantly inhibited TU686 cell proliferatio

High-Resolution Laryngeal US: Imaging Technique, Normal Anatomy, and Spectrum of Disease.

Although US is one of the most used modalities for head and neck imaging, its use in the diagnosis of laryngeal abnormalities is much less widespread. The standard assessment of laryngeal abnormalities currently involves direct laryngoscopy and cross-sectional imaging (either CT or MRI) but rarely US. US is readily available, noninvasive, and radiation free, and it allows real-time imaging (with video for dynamic assessment), higher resolution than that of cross-sectional imaging, and the performance of targeted fine needle aspiration cytology or biopsy. This modality, particularly with the ad
