The technique of thyroidectomy has been in evolution for many years. It is a basic rule of surgery that an important structure of a human body must be recognized certainly during the surgical procedure in order to prevent its damage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our routine identification and without identification of recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroidectomy aiming to lessen the inadvertent injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This retrospective clinical controlled study was performed in the Department of ENT and Head-Neck Surgery, BIRDEM General Hospital and the Departm

OBJECTIVES: Functional outcomes following microflap surgery for vocal fold pathology are favorable. Although the stratified squamous epithelium appears to heal rapidly, persistent physiologic tissue alterations are likely. We sought to elucidate key biochemical processes including recruitment of immune cells, regulation of cellular junction proteins, and long-term alterations to epithelial tissue permeability following microflap with an eye toward enhanced clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Forty New Zealand rabbits were assigned to eight groups (n = 5/group): no-injury control or bilateral microfla

Background Croup is an inflammatory disease that affects the upper respiratory tract involving the upper airways of the lungs (bronchial tubes), vocal cords (larynx), and windpipe (trachea). In Canada, it is considered one of the major causes of respiratory diseases in the first 10 years of life. A wide range of viruses like common cold and flu (influenza) infections can cause croup (laryngotracheobronchitis). Dexamethasone has been commonly used to treat croup even though it lacks evidence on patients' recovery. The study aimed to compare the effect of the immediate or late dexamethasone admi

INTRODUCTION: Covid-19 is an infectious disease with a different symptomatic implication depending on each person. There are sequelae in the nervous, cardiovascular, and/or digestive system that involve the approach and multidisciplinary work of different health professionals where the speech therapist is included. In this way, we can speak of a direct relationship between speech therapy and Covid-19; especially in those patients with serious sequelae such as the inability to eat and/or speak and the loss of voice. The damage caused to the laryngeal mucosa triggers the loss of some of the qual

We will be discussing a very rare neurodegenerative disorder called Fahr's disease, which is characterized by calcifications in the basal ganglia and other brain regions. Our case describes a 54-year-old lady presenting with abnormal aggressive behavior. Interestingly, in our case, the patient later developed vocal cord paresis, of which only one similar case has been reported before. CT was done, which showed typical extensive diffuse calcifications of the basal ganglia and other brain regions. Her labs were significant for normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism. During her stay in the hospital, s

OBJECTIVE: Laryngoscopy corresponding with laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) is essential in diagnosing vocal fold paresis. However, baseline asymmetry or other diseases oftentimes confound the exam, making diagnosis difficult. There is currently no agreed upon endoscopic criteria proven to reliably correlate with LEMG findings. We define a set of endoscopic findings termed "paresis triad" that, when present together, reliably correlate with LEMG. The paresis triad consists of (1) hypocontraction of the weak side of the larynx with increased ventricular show, (2) hypercontraction of the intact

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Glucocorticoids (GC)s are commonly employed to treat vocal fold (VF) pathologies. However, VF atrophy has been associated with intracordal GC injections. Dexamethasone-induced skeletal muscle atrophy is well-documented in other tissues and believed to be mediated by increased muscle proteolysis via upregulation of Muscle Ring Finger (MuRF)-1 and Atrogin-1. Mechanisms of dexamethasone-mediated VF atrophy have not been described. This pilot study employed in vitro and in vivo models to investigate the effects of dexamethasone on VF epithelium, thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, a

OBJECTIVES: Chronic cough is a complaint of up to 46% of patients referred to specialist clinics. Patients with cough often report hoarseness at the time of the cough diagnosis. When the cough fails to resolve with standard medications, referrals to other specialists including otolaryngologists are made. This is the first study to report the specific diagnosis and length of time it took to obtain a specific voice disorder diagnosis in patients with chronic cough.
STUDY DESIGN: Case Series METHODS: The charts of 105 patients referred to the Loma Linda Voice and Swallowing Center were reviewed.

Gout nodules (tophi) are formed by a chronic inflammatory reaction in tissues resulting in deposition of urate crystals. They are commonly seen in joints and surrounding tissues, subcutaneous tissues, as well as the pinna and kidney, and are characteristic manifestations of gout. Vocal cord tophi are rarely reported in the literature, and patients often present with hoarseness, progressive dysphagia, and other symptoms. We report a case of a vocal cord mass found by gastroscopy in a patient with a history of gout for more than 20 years. Postoperative pathological findings were vocal cord tophi

INTRODUCTION: Vocal fold nodules (VNs) in children are benign, bilateral, callous-like lesions at the junction of the anterior third and posterior two-thirds of the true vocal folds. Chronic, repetitive, and intense vocal behavior is often cited as the primary etiology; however, difficulties with emotional adjustment may predispose some children towards extreme and possibly phonotraumatic vocal activity, thereby contributing secondarily to the development of VNs.
OBJECTIVES: This case-control study examined the association between features of emotional adjustment and VNs in children.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction (VCD/ILO) is characterized by breathlessness and often mimics or accompanies severe asthma. The disorder occurs intermittently, and the diagnosis is established by using laryngoscopy. Dynamic computed tomography (CT) imaging of the larynx at low-radiation doses has the potential to provide an alternative method to make the diagnosis of VCD/ILO. METHODS: We report two case series: in series A, laryngoscopy (diagnostic standard) and CT imaging of the larynx were each performed within 1 hour of each other (n=31), and in series B,

OBJECTIVE: Glucocorticoids (GCs) modulate multiple cellular activities including inflammatory and fibrotic responses. Outcomes of GC treatment for laryngeal disease vary, affording opportunity to optimize treatment. In the current study, three clinically employed GCs were evaluated to identify optimal in vitro concentrations at which GCs mediate favorable anti-inflammatory and fibrotic effects in multiple cell types. We hypothesize a therapeutic window will emerge as a foundation for optimized therapeutic strategies for patients with laryngeal disease.
STUDY DESIGN: In vitro.

BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) mainly presents with lower respiratory tract symptoms. On the other hand, laryngotracheitis or croup shows barky cough and it is rare in adults. There were no reports of laryngotracheitis with COVID-19 in pregnant women. We report the case of a pregnant woman at 24 weeks of gestation presenting with acute laryngotracheitis and COVID-19 due to the R.1 variant of SARS-CoV-2. CASE REPORT A 29-year-old previously healthy woman at 24 weeks of gestat
