PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sulcus vocalis is a benign condition of the vocal folds that, according to its severity, can affect the quality of the voice of those who have it. Voice symptoms can range from mild to severe, affecting the quality of life of patients with this condition. Although different surgical and no surgical options have been described, no gold standard treatment has been described.
RECENT FINDINGS: New evidence supports congenital, inflammatory, and acquired theories for sulcus vocalis. Also, recent literature demonstrated the role of the epithelium in the pathogenesis, which makes

INTRODUCTION: The presence of a vocal fold mass implies high mechanical stress at the vocal fold base during vibration and an impaired glottic closure. However, evidence about its potential effects on diagnostic tools used in voice evaluation is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the location, laterality, and size of a unilateral unique vocal fold lesion on patient self-assessment questionnaires, acoustic-aerodynamic voice measures, and perceptual voice evaluation (GRBAS scale).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review involving patients with a diagnosis of a unique unilateral vocal fol

Vocal cord dysfunction (i.e., vocal cords closing when they should be opening, particularly during inspiration) should be suspected in patients presenting with inspiratory stridor or wheezing; sudden, severe dyspnea (without hypoxia, tachypnea, or increased work of breathing); throat or chest tightness; and anxiety, particularly in females. Common triggers include exercise, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, postnasal drip, upper or lower respiratory tract infection, and irritants. Nasolaryngoscopy and pulmonary function testing, with provocative exercise and methacholine, can help diagn

PURPOSE: Laryngoscopy, the most common diagnostic method for vocal cord lesions (VCLs), is based mainly on the visual subjective inspection of otolaryngologists. This study aimed to establish a highly objective computer-aided VCLs diagnosis system based on deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and transfer learning.
METHODS: To classify VCLs, our method combined the DCNN backbone with transfer learning on a system specifically finetuned for a laryngoscopy image dataset. Laryngoscopy image database was collected to train the proposed system. The diagnostic performance was compared with othe

IMPORTANCE: Endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation are life-saving treatments for acute respiratory failure but are complicated by significant rates of dyspnea and dysphonia after extubation. Unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI) after extubation can alter respiration and phonation, but its incidence, risk factors, and pathophysiology remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of UVFI after prolonged (>12 hours) mechanical ventilation in a medical intensive care unit and investigate associated clinical risk factors for UVFI after prolonged mechanical ventilation.

INTRODUCTION: Telemedicine is an increasingly prevalent component of medical practice. In otolaryngology, there is the potential for telemedicine services to be performed in conjunction with device use, such as with a nasolaryngoscope. This study evaluates the reliability of remote examinations of the upper airway through an iPhone recording using a coupling device attached to a nasopharyngolaryngoscope (NPL).
METHODS: A prospective, blinded study was performed for pediatric patients requiring an NPL during an office visit. The NPL was performed using a coupling device attached to a smartphon

Paradoxical vocal cord motion (PVCM) is a condition characterized by inappropriate adduction of the vocal cords during respiration. Usually seen in children and adolescents, PVCM presentation in infants is uncommon. Once thought to be a product of psychiatric disease, there are now several other proposed etiologies including irritant-induced and secondary to neurologic disease. Previous studies showed that the treatment of gastric reflux in this age group leads to a resolution of symptoms. We present a case of PVCM in an infant with hydrocephalus and Chiari II malformation. She received reflux

Radiotherapy (RT) and transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) represent the main treatment modalities for early glottic carcinoma. Local failure is notoriously more frequent in T1b glottic cancer in comparison to T1a and T2 tumors. In this scenario, the role of anterior commissure (AC) involvement is still controversial. The aim of the present study was therefore to determine its potential prognostic power in worsening patients' survival and outcomes. We categorized different tumor glottic fold locations with respect to the involvement of one (T1a) or both vocal cords, with or without AC involvemen

We present a case of a 17-year-old woman with a history of bronchial asthma since two years of age. She had daily asthma attacks from the age of fourteen, and the addition of oral corticosteroids and omalizumab to regular inhaled corticosteroid inhalation failed to relieve symptoms. She was referred to our hospital for detailed examination. On admission, physical examination was normal, but she had complained of dyspnea at the round. Monophonic wheezes and stridor were heard over the anterior neck, while no rales were audible over any part of the chest. Laryngoscopy revealed paradoxical moveme

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that causes partial or complete loss of motor reflexes and speech and affects thinking, behavior, and other vital functions affecting the nervous system. Parkinson's disease causes impaired speech and motor abilities (writing, balance, etc.) in about 90% of patients and is often seen in older people. Some signs (deterioration of vocal cords) in medical voice recordings from Parkinson's patients are used to diagnose this disease. The database used in this study contains biomedical speech voice from 31 people of different age and sex related to this

OBJECTIVES: In pediatric pediatric vocal fold nodule (VFN) patients, different causes have been suggested in the development of the vocal cord nodule, including laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). It is known that the content of consumed foods, obesity, and other dietary behaviors are among the risk factors for the development of reflux. The aim of this study was to evaluate dietary and food consumption habits in pediatric VFN patients.
METHODS: This prospective-controlled study included 50 children with VFNs (age range 5-14 years) and 50 age-matched children without any voice disorders as a cont
