Spasmodic dysphonia: introductory phonetic analyses.

Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is a neurological dystonia characterised by involuntary adductor spasms of the larynx during speech. Spasm frequency is often reported to increase during syllables that begin with voiced speech sounds, especially glottal stops. Because of its underlying physical and acoustic complexities, the voicing contrast in American English (AE) appears unlikely to interact consistently with a singular physical phenomenon like laryngeal spasm. This retrospective study investigated additional phonetic contrasts and their relationship to spasm frequency. Standardised, 144

Radiocontrast-Diatrozate and Iopromide-Induced Severe Hypocalcemia Leading to Painful Tetanic and Severe Laryngeal Spasm: A Near Fatal Encounter.

Routinely advised radiological investigations like contrast-enhanced scans can have adverse effects on electrolyte imbalance due to the administration of Radiocontrast. Urograffin (Diatrizoate) and Ultravist (Iopromide) are some of the common examples of contrasts given to patients that possibly led to chelation of the calcium in serum causing severe carpopedal spasms and painful muscular tetany in our patient. Here we report a case of a 32-year-old female patient with acute gastroenteritis who presented with complaints of pain in the abdomen, multiple episodes of vomiting, and loose stools un

Simultaneous Botox and Augmentation Injection Laryngoplasty in Patients With Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia (ASD) and Tremor.

OBJECTIVE: Although Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) is effective for adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ASD) and essential vocal tremor (EVT), the side effects of breathy dysphonia may result in reluctance to pursue BOTOX treatment. We sought to improve results in selected elderly tremor patients with EVT and in professional voice users with ASD by simultaneous BOTOX injection and injection laryngoplasty using Hyaluronic acid (HA/Botox). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between July 2018 and March 2022, 23 simultaneous HA/Botox using LEMG control were done in eight patients with ASD and EVT (23 of 406 Botox Injectio

The impact of topical lidocaine and timing of LMA removal on the incidence of airway events during the recovery period in children: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The timing of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) removal remains undefined. This study aimed to assess the optimal timing for LMA removal and whether topical anesthesia with lidocaine could reduce airway adverse events. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial assessed one-to-six-year-old children with ASA I-II scheduled for squint correction surgery under general anesthesia. The children were randomized into the LA (lidocaine cream smeared to the cuff of the LMA before insertion, with mask removal in the awake state), LD (lidocaine application and LMA removal under deep anesthesia), NL

Laryngeal spasm and tracheostomy after hydroxyapatite injection laryngoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (Ad-SD) is usually treated by botulinum toxin injection into the thyroarytenoid muscles. In older patients, atrophy of these muscles is responsible for glottic leak, causing presbyphonia and is managed by vocal fold medialization using autologous fat or hydroxyapatite (HA). We report the first case of uncontrollable laryngeal spasm requiring tracheostomy after hydroxyapatite injection laryngoplasty in a patient with spasmodic dysphonia and presbyphonia. CASE REPORT: An 83-year-old man had been treated for Ad-SD by botulinum toxin injections every six

Spasmodic Dysphonia: Standardized Spanish Tool for Ambulatory Consult Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a focal dystonia of the larynx where involuntary spasms of its intrinsic muscles are triggered by specific phonemes. The diagnosis is challenging and is performed by listening to the patient's voice, supported by nasolaryngoscopy. There is no diagnostic tool in Spanish for SD. The objective of our study is to establish phonetically studied vocal tasks in Spanish language to diagnose patients with SD. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a prospective study in three groups of patients: 11 with SD, 11 with another vocal disease, and 11 with no vocal disease, re

Objective Measures of Stroboscopy and High-Speed Video.

Videostroboscopy and high-speed imaging is now an accepted way to evaluate laryngeal function in patients with voice disorders. In patients with neurolaryngological diseases such as tremor, laryngeal spasm, and paralysis, having an objective way to evaluate vocal function is desirable. Using digital imaging and analysis, both the videostroboscopy and the high-speed video can be analyzed to obtain relevant measures of vocal function. From the videostroboscopy, the montage of the glottal cycle derived from steady of vocal vibration can be analyzed by using edge tracking software to obtain the gl

[Negative pressure pulmonary edema secondary to laryngospasm: a case report].

Negative pressure pulmonary edema is a rare complication of general anesthesia. This paper presents a case of acute negative pressure pulmonary edema that occurred during general anesthesia resuscitation. The patient is a young male that underwent bimaxillary surgery under general anesthesia. Laryngospasm spasm ensued after extubation. The treatment for laryngeal spasm retained the smoothness of the nasopharyngal airway, and the pulse oxygen saturation rapidly decreased after anesthesia resuscitation. Pink foam sputum was sucked out from the cavity due to respiratory shortness from mouth and n

A Trigger Reduction Approach to Treatment of Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion Disorder in the Pediatric Population.

OBJECTIVES: Paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder (PVFMD), or induced laryngeal obstruction (ILO), is a clinical phenomenon characterized by inappropriate adduction of the true vocal folds during inspiration. The resultant episodes of acute respiratory distress marked by exercise-induced cough, inspiratory stridor, throat tightness, and shortness of breath are often misattributed to asthma despite normal pulmonary function testing results. Although the pathogenesis of the disease remains unclear, the etiology is likely multifactorial with an inflammatory, neurological, and psychiatric basis.

Facial nerve palsy and laryngospasm as a complication of local anaesthesia during adenotonsillectomy.

Tonsil surgeries are the most frequently performed surgical procedures in ENT departments. We would like to present the case of a 5-year-old patient who suffered from unilateral peripheral facial nerve palsy and laryngeal spasm following adenotonsillectomy. Paresis was observed immediately after the transfer of the patient to the postoperative room. The activity of facial muscles was restored within 2 hours from the beginning of the surgery. We assume that this was the direct effect of an anaesthetic on the extracranial processes of the facial nerve.
