The present study was undertaken to evaluate possible beneficial effects of gammaglobulin treatment every 3 weeks during 6 months of 6-month to 2-year-old children. Every second of 44 children with recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) received gammaglobulin, the other 22 served as controls. Nasal mucosal biopsy specimens were taken at 6-month intervals and analysed by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fifty-five patients with deep neck infections treated consecutively over a period of six and a half years between January 1983 and July 1989 were reviewed. A prospective study was performed on 358 patients to examine the diagnosis, management, and natural history of fish bone ingestion. All patients admitted with the complaint had a thorough oral examination. Flexible endoscopy under local pharyngeal anesthesia would be performed on patients with negative findings. The cases of 42 patients with low-velocity gunshot wounds to the spine with an associated perforated viscus were reviewed. All viscus perforations occurred prior to the spinal injury. There were a total of 51 perforations, including 14 of the colon, 15 of the small bowel, 15 of the stomach, five of the esophagus, and two of the pharynx. Retropharyngeal abscess is a rather rare, deep-neck infection of children and may seriously compromise the airway and mimic other diseases. A retrospective review of 17 cases of retropharyngeal abscess presenting to The Children's Hospital, Denver, from 1976 to 1986 was performed. Nine children (56%) had stridor or airway obstruction. From January 1975 through July 1981, ten patients with mediastinitis complicating an oropharyngeal infection, that is, a form of mediastinitis best termed as DNM, were encountered at our institution. Anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections are common in the setting of aspiration. Treatment is with penicillin or in mixed infections, penicillin and other appropriate antimicrobial agents. The occurrence and spread of staphylococcal infections in stocks of SPF-animals were studied over a period of more than three years. The results were compared with observations made by other authors. Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from both sick and healthy animals (mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs) as well as from veterinary staff were lysotyped with the international phage set for epidemiological investigations. The T-cell counts in five different clinical tonsil stages are compared. No particularities were observed, with the exception of the condition after a peritonsillar abscess. The differences existing between the individual groups are discussed as age-dependent. A considerable increase in T-cells is found in the abscess tonsil compared with other tonsils and the T-cell count in blood. Its pathomechanism is discussed.

The pharmacological and clinical properties of bacampicillin in three dosage groups were studied in 66 hospitalized patients with unilateral acute peritonsillitis in a comparison with ampicillin. Bacampicillin is a new semisynthetic aminopenicillin which is rapidly converted to ampicillin but is better absorbed. Both drugs were given orally.
