Congenital Upper Airway Malformations and Malacia in Infancy: Population-Based Prevalence, Sex Differences, and Trends in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital upper airway malformations and malacia are important causes of respiratory morbidity in early infancy, yet population-based epidemiological data remain scarce, particularly in Latin America. Most available estimates derive from single-centre cohorts, limiting generalizability and health system planning. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective, population-based study using Colombia's administrative healthcare database (RIPS). We identified healthcare encounters coded with ICD-10 diagnoses corresponding to congenital upper airway malformations and malacia among

Association between gut microbiota and acute upper respiratory tract infection: a Mendelian randomization study.

Targeting specific gut microbiota (GM) species to prevent and treat acute upper respiratory tract infection (AURTI) has attracted researchers' attention, but the relationship between the two is unclear. Based on the summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on GM and five types of AURTIs (acute nasopharyngitis (common cold), acute pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, acute upper respiratory infections, and acute upper respiratory infections of multiple and unspecified sites), we performed two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the causal relationship. Through i

Acute upper respiratory infections admissions in England and Wales.

Acute respiratory infections block the bronchial and/or nasal systems' airways. These infections may present in a variety of ways, from minor symptoms like the common cold to more serious illnesses like pneumonia or lung collapse. Acute respiratory infections cause over 1.3 million infant deaths under the age of 5 each year throughout the world. Among all illnesses, respiratory infections make for 6% of the worldwide disease burden. We aimed to examine the admissions related to acute upper respiratory infections admissions in England and Wales for the period between April 1999 and April 2020.

Obesity and risk for respiratory diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: No existing comprehensive Mendelian randomization studies have focused on how obesity affects respiratory diseases. METHODS: BMI and waist circumference, mainly from the UK Biobank, and 35 respiratory diseases from the FinnGen Biobank were subjected to Mendelian randomization analyses. In this study, the inverse variance weighting method was used as the predominant analysis method and was complemented by MR-Egger and weighted median methods. Horizontal pleiotropy and potential outliers were detected by employing the MR-PRESSO method. RESULTS: This study indicated that obesity ris

Infectious events in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, chimeric antigen receptor T cells, and bispecific T-cell engagers: a review of registration studies.

BACKGROUND: Immunological treatments (immune checkpoint inhibitors [ICIs], chimeric antigen receptor T [CAR-T] cells, bispecific T-cell engagers [BiTEs]) have deeply changed the treatment of several cancers. However, the impact of these treatments on the risk of developing infections has not been completely ascertained yet. METHODS: We reviewed all the registration studies of currently approved ICIs, CAR-T cells, and BiTEs to collect all the reported infections. For each drug, we have generated a report with the infections occurring in at least 10% of the patients enrolled. RESULTS: The most

Comparison of pulmonary lesions using lung ultrasound and high-resolution computed tomography in adult patients with primary humoral immunodeficiencies.

Pulmonary involvement is the most common complication in patients with predominantly antibody deficiencies (PADs). Therefore, patients require repeated imaging tests. Unlike high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), lung ultrasonography (LUS) does not expose patients to X-rays or contrast agents, and can be performed even at the bedside. This study aimed to evaluate lung lesions using simultaneous LUS and HRCT in a group of patients with PADs. Twenty-nine adult patients (13 women and 16 men) diagnosed with PADs according to the ESID criteria (23 Common variable immunodeficiency, 2 X-linked a

Use and Cost Analysis of Comprehensive Respiratory Panel Testing in a Pediatric Emergency Department.

OBJECTIVES: Fever and respiratory infections are among the leading causes of pediatric emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Although typically self-resolving, clinicians may perform diagnostic tests to determine microbial etiologies of these illnesses. Although comprehensive respiratory viral panels can quickly identify causative organisms, cost to the hospital and patient may be significant. The objective of this study was to analyze the financial impact of comprehensive respiratory viral panel use in relation to associated clinical outcomes. METHODS: This study was a single-cen

Pooled safety analysis of zanubrutinib monotherapy in patients with B-cell malignancies.

Zanubrutinib is a selective Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor evaluated in multiple B-cell malignancy studies. We constructed a pooled safety analysis to better understand zanubrutinib-associated treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and identify treatment-limiting toxicities. Data were pooled from 6 studies (N = 779). Assessments included type, incidence, severity, and outcome of TEAEs. Median age was 65 years; 20% were ≥75 years old. Most patients had Waldenström macroglobulinemia (33%), chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (29%), or mantle-cell lymphoma (19%). Me

Prevalence of Infectious Diseases Among 6078 Individuals With Down Syndrome in the United States.

A recent disease prevalence study of the largest documented Down syndrome (DS) cohort in the United States strongly suggested significant disparity in general infectious disease conditions among individuals with DS versus those without DS. In this follow-up retrospective analysis, we explored these differences in greater detail by calculating prevalence of 52 infectious diseases, across 28 years of data among 6078 individuals with DS and 30,326 age- and sex-matched controls, abstracted from electronic medical records within a large Midwestern health system. We found that the DS cohort had high
