Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome mimicking an acute pulmonary embolism: a report of six adult cases and a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In patients with pulmonary embolism (PE), a pulmonary radiograph may reveal oligemic fields (the Westermark sign) associated with sites of occlusion of the pulmonary arteries, interruption or loss of the artery line (the knuckle sign), and even unilateral hyperlucency attributable to reduced overall lung vascularity. In Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS), which develops as a result of bronchiolitis obliterans, unilateral hyperlucency is evident because of emphysema and hypoplasia of the pulmonary artery and its branches. Therefore, SJMS cases with clinical and laboratory d

Successful Management of Patient with Treatment Resistant Schizophrenia and Swyer-James-Macleod Syndrome with Clozapine.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare disorder characterized by infective bronchiolitis. It typically presents with a history of recurrent chest infections during childhood. Cardinal sign of the disease includes the hyperlucency of the lung fields. Till date, only a few cases have been reported of this syndrome. We report a very unusual case of SJMS along with comorbid schizophrenia in a 20-year-old female and the successful management using clozapine.

Swyer-James-Macleod Syndrome: A Rare Entity.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is a radiological entity characterised by hyperlucency of one or more lobes or of the entire lung associated with decreased number and diameter of ipsilateral peripheral pulmonary vessels resulting in difficult visibility of the arterial network, and unobstructed bronchial system. We report the case of a 12-year-old girl who presented with chief complaint of pain in the chest. Chest radiograph (postero-anterior view) showed hyperlucent left lung field with increased lung volume and shift of the mediastinum to the right side. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (C

Asymptomatic Unilateral Hyperlucent Lung in a Prospective Kidney Donor.

A 50 year old lady, prospective kidney donor was referred to our department for opinion in view of abnormal clinical findings during preoperative evaluation. She was asymptomatic from respiratory point of view. Her vital parameters were normal and on auscultation found to have decreased breath sounds and fine crackles throughout left hemithorax. Chest x-ray (CXR) showed left sided hyperlucency with small hilum (Figure 1). High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed scattered areas of bronchiectasis with associated air trapping throughout left lung with small left pulmonary artery (Figure

Regional ventilation/perfusion mismatch pattern in patient with Swyer James (MacLeod's) syndrome.

Swyer James (McLeod's) syndrome (SJMS) is an uncommon disease, which occurs as a result of childhood bronchiolitis obliterans. Patients may not be diagnosed until later in their life. A 46-year-old man underwent ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy for acute onset of dyspnea. The scan showed markedly diminished ventilation and perfusion unilaterally on the right middle and inferior lobes. However, mismatched ventilation-perfusion pattern was shown on the upper right lobe, which was consistent with pulmonary embolism. Unilaterally matched ventilation/perfusion defect can see in SJMS in lung scint

Genetics of Huntington's disease and related disorders.

Huntington's disease is the most frequent form of the hereditary choreas and has a multifaceted phenotype including cognitive and psychiatric impairment. The disorder is due to a dynamic mutation, which also influences the onset age of the disorder. Other genetic modifiers of the HD phenotypes have been suggested but often not confirmed by independent studies. Several syndromes with similar presentation have different genetic backgrounds, including the neuroacanthocytoses, mainly choreoacanthocytosis and MacLeod syndrome as a result of mutations in chorein and Kell protein, respectively, but a

Cases Diagnosed with Swyer James Macleod Syndrome in Adulthood.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome or unilateral hyperlucent lung syndrome is a rare disease characterised by hypoplasia of the pulmonary artery, unilateral hyperlucent lung and usually bronchiectasis. The syndrome was first described by Swyer and James in 1953 in a child case, and in the following year 9 adult cases were reported by MacLeod. We retrospectively reviewed 6 adult cases, five female and one male, who were followed-up with the diagnosis of Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome between 2005 and 2012 in our clinic. The clinical and radiological features of these 6 cases are presented in the light

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome with an anomalous origin of coronary artery: Case report.

Swyer-James (Macleod) syndrome was first defined in the 1950s by Swyer, James and Macleod in patients with unilateral hyperlucent lungs. Coronary artery anomalies are congenital anomalies that affect a small part of the population. They constitute about 1-2% of congenital heart diseases. The incidence of a left coronary artery arising from the right coronary sinus Valsalva has been reported as 0.017%, and 1.3% among coronary artery anomalies. We hereby present this case since the case was diagnosed in adult age and was accompanied by a rare congenital heart disease.

Adult diagnosis of Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome: retrospective analysis of four cases.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare constrictive bronchiolitis with air-flow obstruction and a decreased number and diameter of ipsilateral peripheral pulmonary vessels. This syndrome is characterized by unilateral hyperlucency on chest radiography. Computed tomography provides useful additional information. The diagnosis is usually made in childhood but sometimes occurs in adulthood. The disease often presents with dyspnea, decreased exercise tolerance, cough, hemoptysis, and recurrent pulmonary infections. SJMS may be confused with asthma or pulmonary embolism due to similar sympto

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome in a surgically treated child: a case report and brief literature review.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare, complex disease characterized by unilateral hyperlucent lung or lobe owing to loss of pulmonary vasculature and alveolar hyperdistention. Treatment is generally conservative, and surgical management is rare. In fact, only 4 reports on surgically treated children with SJMS are available in the literature. We describe an 8-year-old patient with a history of recurrent respiratory infections since 2 months old. The patient presented with cough and dyspnea on effort. Chest radiograph showed hyperlucency and reduction of the right lung. Computed tomogra

A rare case of swyer-james macleod syndrome and a new clinical presentation, acquired lobar emphysema.

Swyer-James Macleod syndrome is a radiologic entity characterized by hyperlucency of one or more lobes or of the entire lung, decreased number and diameter of ipsilateral peripheral pulmonary vessels, and difficult visibility of the arterial network and unobstructed bronchial system. A 21-year-old male was admitted to our clinic on the observation of left hemithoracic hyperinflation on chest radiography. Preoperative evaluation revealed an increase of ventilation to the left lower lobe and the deletion of peripheral vascular structures. Scintigraphy revealed a perfusion defect in the left lowe

Genetic, host, and environmental interactions in a 19 year old with severe chronic obstructive lung disease; observations regarding the pathophysiology of airflow obstruction.

A case of a 19-year-old with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is presented. This case illustrates genetic (severe alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency) and host factors (such as developmental diaphragmatic hernia and the innate response to injury), and environmental (high oxidative stress and lung injury) interactions that lead to severe chronic obstructive lung disease. The development of chronic lung disease was caused by lung injury under high oxidative and inflammatory conditions in the setting of a diaphragmatic hernia. In the absence of normal alpha-1 antitrypsin levels, a pro-elas
