Talcum induced pneumoconiosis following inhalation of adulterated marijuana, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Talcosis, a granulomatous inflammation of the lungs caused by inhalation of talcum dust, is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. Besides inhalative occupational exposure, intravenous abuse of adulterated drugs is a major cause for this condition. Minerals such as talcum (magnesium silicate) and sand (predominant silicon dioxide) are used to increase both volume and weight of illicit substances. In intravenous heroin-abuse, talcosis is a well-known complication. Here we describe a case of talcosis caused by inhalative abuse of adulterated marijuana. CLINICAL HISTORY: A 29-year old man pr

[Case report of a rare occupational disease: a during life non-recognised occupational disease--talcosis].

Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate used in the chemical, ceramic, cosmetic, leather, paper and building industries. Interstitial lung disease - talcosis - due to exclusive talc inhalation is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. More often, pulmonary disease due to talc is encountered after intravenous administration of talc during drug abuse. Talc can contain asbestos or quartz particles which induce asbestosis or silicosis. Here we present a case report about a worker who was exposed to talcum during his work in tire manufacturing. During his lifetime an occupational disease was not recognised.

Lung cancer among silica-exposed workers: the quest for truth between chance and necessity.

BACKGROUND: In 1997, IARC upgraded crystalline silica to a Group 1 human carcinogen. However, the IARC report itself acknowledged variations in risk depending on inherent characteristics of the crystalline silica or external factors affecting its biological activity or distribution of its polymorphs. METHODS: We reviewed silica physical and physico-chemical properties and how such properties may affect its interaction with the target cells. Studies of silica, silicosis and lung cancer published from 1997 onwards are then reviewed in the search of any new advances in knowledge about silica car

Denim sandblasting and silicosis two new subsequent cases in Turkey.

UNLABELLED: In our country quartz is widely used for denim sandblasting and new cases with silicosis are defined. Silicosis is a preventable occupational lung disease caused by inhaled dust containing crystalline silica and no effective treatment for silicosis is available (1). CASE 1: A 23-years old man was admitted to the hospital with dyspnea on effort and cough. He had worked in a denim manufacturing factory for three years at sandblasting and dyeing. Physical examination revealed decreased breath sounds. Chest X-ray showed bilateral reticulonodular densities predominantly at middle and lo

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and occupational exposure to silica.

Prolonged exposure to high levels of silica has long been known to cause silicosis This paper evaluates the evidence for an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in occupations and industries in which exposure to crystalline silica is the primary exposure, with a focus on the magnitude of risks and levels of exposure causing disabling health effects. The literature suggests consistently elevated risks of developing COPD associated with silica exposure in several occupations, including the construction industry; tunneling; cement industry; brick manufacturing; pottery a

Exposures to silica mixed dust and cohort mortality study in tin mines: exposure-response analysis and risk assessment of lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Mineral dusts that contain crystalline silica have been associated directly or indirectly with the development of pneumoconiosis or silicosis, non-malignant respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and other diseases. The health impacts on workers with silica mixed dust exposure in tin mines and dose-response relationships between cumulative dust exposure and the mortality from lung cancer are investigated. METHODS: A cohort of 7,837 workers registered in the employment records in 4 Chinese tin mines between 1972 and 1974 was identified for this study and the mortality follow-up was tra

[Health significance of inhaled particles].

Particulates refer to particles, dust, dirt, soot and aerosol mists that has suspended in the surrounding air. They may consist of solids of various forms including fibres or liquids. Long term exposure to silicon dioxide containing dusts (crystalline silica: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, coesite, stishovite) may cause pneumoconiosis in the form of acute or/either chronic silicosis. Asbestos refers to a divers family of crystalline hydrated fibrous siliates typically exhibiting a greater tha 3:1 length ot diameter ratio. Vermont granite mortality study: an update with an emphasis on lung cancer.

This mortality study extends the period of observation of an article published in 1988 of 5414 workers in Vermont granite sheds and quarries to assess whether previously reported reductions in silicosis and tuberculosis mortality were maintained. The relationship between lung cancer and quartz exposure is also examined by comparing mortality in workers hired before and after 1940, when dust controls were introduced and exposures were reduced by 80% to 90%. Before 1940, general stone shed air contained 20 million particles/cubic foot (mppcf) (approximately equivalent to 0.2 mg/m of quartz), and

Reaction of cysteine and glutathione (GSH) at the freshly fractured quartz surface: a possible role in silica-related diseases?

The reactivity of quartz dusts towards glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cys) has been investigated. Cys and GSH react, without being adsorbed (UV-Vis spectroscopy), with commercial quartz dusts in an exposed surface-dependent way, but not with amorphous silica. GSH and Cys have been contacted with freshly ground quartz (agate jar QZg-a and steel jar QZg-s) and quartz heated in air at 500 degrees C (QZs-500) and with a dust generated from a purified quartz (99.9999%) to detect the nature of the reacting surface sites. With both GSH and Cys, the highest reactivity was found on the particles groun

From quartz hazard to quartz risk: the coal mines revisited.

Following the classification of quartz as a human carcinogen by the IARC, many standard-setting committees are currently trying to convert this hazard into their national or EU standards. Since human data to set a safe exposure limit for quartz are limited, we hypothesized that lung burden data on quartz in coal miners' lungs after lifetime exposure could be used to set a non-carcinogenic lung burden of quartz, and that this might be valid for other groups occupationally exposed to quartz. A review of data shows that lungs of coal miners with simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis (sCWP) typicall

Exposure to tremolite asbestos and respiratory health in Swedish dolomite workers.

OBJECTIVES: Deposits of carbonate rock like limestone and dolomite may contain tremolite asbestos. This study assessed the exposure to tremolite asbestos and the respiratory health of Swedish dolomite workers. METHODS: 95% of 137 eligible workers at two dolomite producing companies completed a self administered questionnaire that included questions on respiratory symptoms and were examined with spirometry as well as chest radiography. Total exposure to dust was gravimetrically measured and the tremolite asbestos content of the dust was assessed with polarisation and phase contrast microscopy.

[The preparation and characterization of fine dusts carried out in the Clinica del Lavoro di Milano in support of experimental studies].

This paper aims to illustrate the conditions selected at the Clinica del Lavoro of the University of Milan to prepare and analyze a large number of fine dust samples produced over a period of about 50 years, that were initially used for studies within the Clinic performed in its own facilities, and since 1956 were sent to other Italian and overseas laboratories (Luxembourg, UK, Germany, Norway, Sweden, South Korea, USA). The total quantity of material distributed (with maximum size 7-10 microns) was about 2 kg and consisted of the following mineral and artificial compounds: quartz, HF-treated

[Pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation: silicosis].

Silicosis is an important disease not only for its prevalence and the degree of pulmonary insufficiency it entails but also because it provides a natural model of interstitial fibrotic disease in the lung which is of known origin. This can, in turn, help us understand the pathogenic nature of a great number of pulmonary fibroses whose cause is unknown. The fifty postmortem studies which we describe correspond to miners who had worked in underground mines in the mountainous region near Cartagena (SE Spain) for times ranging from 5 to 36 years. The autopsies showed that they had been exposed to

Hospital records: an underutilized source of information regarding occupational diseases and exposures.

A 1993 study examined the association between pneumoconiosis and cor pulmonale using a computerized data base of hospital records in Ontario (Hospital Medical Records Institute, HMRI). The present investigation was undertaken to confirm the coding of the diagnoses of a subset of the hospital discharges from that study, to determine the validity of the coding of the diagnoses of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), and to identify work exposure (occupation and industry) information available in hospital records. We sent abstraction forms to hospitals for 521 subjects who were hospitalized for pn

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied endpoints to the role of (crystalline) silica, considering its recent classification as a human carcinogen. For most of the effects coal mine dust was chosen as a reference, since it contains up to 10% of

A battle for compensation for Welsh coal miners: JS Haldane v "Sericite" Jones, 1932-1934.

Toward the end of the 1920s, technical advances in mining led to an increase in airborne burdens of dust in the South Wales coal mines. This coincided with a dramatic increase in the incidence of disability and death from respiratory disease among the miners. For their condition to be compensable, claimants were required to have worked with rock containing more than 50% 'free silica.' Dr W.R. Jones, a mining geologist, was asked to help obtain compensation for those claimants who could not satisfy the 'free silica' condition. He was unable to identify high-silica rocks where none had been said
