Association of circadian rhythm with mild cognitive impairment among male pneumoconiosis workers in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional study.

Weakened circadian activity rhythms (CARs) were associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the general population. However, it remains unclear among pneumoconiosis patients. We aimed to address this knowledge gap. This cross-sectional study comprised 186 male pneumoconiosis patients (71.3 ± 7.8 years) and 208 healthy community men. Actigraphy was used to determine CARs parameters (percent rhythm, amplitude, MESOR, and acrophase). Values below the corresponding medians of the CARs parameters represented weakened CARs. The Cantonese version of Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) was us

Global Trends in Occupational Lung Disease.

Lung diseases caused by workplace exposure are too often mis- or underdiagnosed due in part to nonexistent or inadequate health surveillance programs for workers. Many of these diseases are indistinguishable from those that occur in the general population and are not recognized as being caused at least in part by occupational exposures. More than 10% of all lung diseases are estimated to result from workplace exposures. This study reviews recent estimates of the burden of the most important occupational lung diseases using data published by United Nations specialized agencies as well as the Gl

Update on Silicosis.

Although silicosis has been an established disease with a recognized cause for more than 100 years, many workers continue to be exposed to silica and new outbreaks of disease continue to occur. This article describes some of the well-established and new exposures, including denim sandblasting, artificial stone cutting, and some forms of "coal worker's pneumoconiosis." The authors review the imaging and pathology of acute silicosis (silicoproteinosis), simple silicosis, and progressive massive fibrosis and summarize known and putative associations of silica exposure, including tuberculosis, lun
