A number of epidemiological studies have shown that byssinosis is associated with exposure to high levels of cotton dust. In this first survey, the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in cotton workers under low concentration of cotton dust was investigated. A respiratory questionnaire consisting of 47 questions was given to 443 cotton workers. Their lung function was measured with spirometry. Breathing zone cotton dust concentration was measured by personal samplers and static sampling was used to define the level of the work area concentration. Workers with abnormalities in the pulmonary func

BACKGROUND: Long-term occupational exposure to cotton dust that contains endotoxin is associated with chronic respiratory symptoms and excessive decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), but the mechanisms of endotoxin-related chronic airflow obstruction remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: In the current study, we examined temporal aspects of the exposure-response relationship between airborne endotoxin exposure, longitudinal change in FEV1, and respiratory symptoms in a cohort of Chinese cotton textile workers.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study followed 447 cotton textile workers fro

BACKGROUND: Byssinosis, the cotton worker's lung disease persists today in many countries. Several agents have been investigated with respect to causality; among these are Gram-negative bacteria. These organisms are a source of lipopolysaccharide toxins, which are potentially hazardous to the respiratory tract. Despite byssinosis being most prevalent in countries where adequate preventive procedures are lacking, the majority of past studies have been conducted on cotton from the United States.
METHODS: The current investigation, involved the identification of Gram-negative bacteria from cotto

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although, in the industrialized world, there is a significant decline in the prevalence of cotton dust lung diseases, studies show an increasing incidence in the developing world. With rapid industrialization of the developing world, cotton dust-induced lung diseases are poised to become a global health problem. Discovery of other vegetable dusts causing similar conditions and appreciation of a wider variety of clinical features also make this an opportune time to review this topic.
RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to chronic exposure-related byssinosis and less common forms of

OBJECTIVES: Endotoxin exposure induces airway inflammation, hyper-responsiveness and higher expression of tumour necrosis factor (TNF). This study was conducted to investigate whether TNF polymorphisms modify the effect of endotoxin exposure on chronic declines in lung function.
METHODS: Associations between TNF and LTA polymorphisms, endotoxin exposure and lung function were analysed in 263 cotton workers and 230 silk workers as a reference group, who were prospectively followed for 20 years. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess the association, with adjustment for smoking a

OBJECTIVE: A prospective study of newly exposed cotton workers was performed to investigate the natural history of respiratory symptoms and lung function changes.
METHODS: A total of 157 workers naive to cotton dust exposure were investigated by questionnaire, spirometry, and skin tests. They were examined before employment (baseline) and at the end of the first week, and the first, third, sixth, and 12th month after starting work. Acute airway response was defined as either a cross-first-shift or a cross-week fall in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). The longitudinal change of l

RATIONALE: Acute airway response, measured as cross-shift change in FEV(1), to cotton dust may lead to subsequent chronic loss of lung function in exposed workers.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the association between the magnitude and frequency of cross-shift change and chronic loss of FEV(1).
METHODS: Four hundred eight cotton workers and 417 silk workers from Shanghai textile mills were observed prospectively for 20 years, with cross-shift measurements at baseline and follow-up surveys at approximate 5-year intervals. To account for repeated measures of 5-year change, generalized estimating equa

The relation between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema (CBE), and exposure to coal dust is well established. This paper reviews the evidence relating to other occupational causes of COPD, including industries associated with exposure to fumes, chemical substances, and dusts. A review of key literature has been carried out with a focus on the magnitude of risks and levels of exposure causing disabling health effects. The literature suggests that elevated risks of developing COPD are clearly associated with several occupations, with risk esti

The presence of byssinosis, an occupational disease found among cotton mill workers, has been well documented in different parts of the world. The disease develops due to exposure to environmental cotton dust. Evidence suggests that the causative agent for the disease is gram-negative bacteria (GNB) and their endotoxins present on the cotton fibers. An investigation was carried out in a gin house in western India. Environmental dust samples were collected by vertical elutriator (VE). Airborne dust concentrations were very high in the working environment: 2.11 mg/m3 in ginning and 0.95 mg/m3 in

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) with double-layer stents (DLS) has been increasingly adopted for carotid revascularization, particularly in patients considered high risk for surgery. However, evidence regarding their early clinical outcomes remains limited and heterogeneous. This systematic review aims to assess the 30-day safety outcomes of CAS using DLS, focusing on stroke, mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), and device-related complications. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, and Cochrane Library for studies published between January 2020

Besides occupational asthma and diseases derived from acute inhalation, other obstructive diseases also have an occupational origin. Although at present byssinosis is a rare disease in Spain, we describe its characteristics because of its historical interest amongst occupational respiratory diseases and because it is still relevant in developing countries. Chronic bronchitis can also be related to exposure at work to dust and smoke, and is often referred to as "industrial bronchitis". Historically, the relation of CPOD to occupation has been subject to controversy, but nowadays this relationsh

BACKGROUND: Exposure to dust in the cotton industry is associated with respiratory dysfunction. Healthy subjects challenged with cotton bract extract (CBE) develop transient airway hyperresponsiveness. CBE, a major component of cotton dust, is potentially an important agent for studying byssinosis.
OBJECTIVES: To compare airway responses to cotton dust extract (CDE) and CBE in healthy subjects.
METHODS: In 21 healthy, non-smoking subjects we compared the effects of CBE and CDE in a double-blind random order, following a 10-min aerosol inhalation. The response to methacholine (MCh) 2 h follow

In order to evaluate chronic effects of long-term exposure to cotton dust on respiratory health, and the role of dust and endotoxin, longitudinal changes in lung function and respiratory symptoms were observed prospectively from 1981 to 2001 in 447 cotton textile workers, along with 472 silk textile controls. The results from five surveys conducted over the 20-yr period are reported, including standardised questionnaires, pre- and post-shift spirometric measurements, work-area inhalable dust sample collections and airborne Gram-bacterial endotoxin analysis. Cotton workers had more persistent r

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is a common endocrine disease that in more than 95% of cases is sporadic and only in some cases is caused by inherited disorders, isolated or as part of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN1 and 2). Somatic mutations of MEN1 gene have also been described in sporadic parathyroid tumors. In our study, we examined the presence of alterations in MEN1 gene in a series of 39 patients who had undergone surgery for sporadic pHPT (35 with parathyroid adenoma or hyperplasia, 4 with a carcinoma). A genotype-phenotype correlation was also analysed. After DNA extraction from

Endotoxin and allergen exposure have been explored in the context of asthma for more than a century. Building upon a pyramid of knowledge are recent observations that provide new insights to the effect of these exposures on the development of asthma. Some of these studies challenge some previously held concepts of the role of these exposures in asthma inception. Indoor allergens are well established as the basis of inflammation in sensitised asthmatics, contributing to disease severity. Then does greater exposure to indoor allergens cause allergen sensitisation and asthma as well? While risk o
