Prevalence of byssinosis and respiratory symptoms among cotton mill workers.

BACKGROUND: While the prevalence of byssinosis is decreasing in industrialized countries and persists at high levels in developing countries, this prevalence is remaining constant in Turkey. OBJECTIVE: In order to determine the effects of past cotton dust exposure on the respiratory tract, a total of 223 persons working in a cotton mill were included in this study. METHODS: A questionnaire was used to inquire about respiratory symptoms. Participants underwent several spirometric measurements, which were performed on the 1st, 3rd and 5th day of the working week. Cotton dust measurements were

Interaction of plant polyphenols with salivary proteins.

Tannins are polyphenols that occur widespread in plant-based food. They are considered to be part of the plant defense system against environmental stressors. Tannins have a number of effects on animals, including growth-rate depression and inhibition of digestive enzymes. Tannins also have an effect on humans: They are, for example, the cause of byssinosis, a condition that is due to exposure to airborne tannin. Their biological effect is related to the great efficiency by which tannins precipitate proteins, an interaction that occurs by hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonding. Two groups of

Longitudinal changes in pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms in cotton textile workers. A 15-yr follow-up study.

To evaluate the chronic effects of exposure to cotton dust, a 15-yr follow-up study in cotton textile workers was performed in Shanghai, China from 1981 to 1996. Testing occurred four times during the 15-yr period. The achieved follow-up rates were 76-88% of the original 447 cotton textile workers, and 70-85% of the original 472 silk textile workers (as a control group). Identical questionnaires, equipment, and methods were used throughout the study. The prevalence of byssinosis increased over time in cotton workers, with 15.3% at the last survey versus 7.6% at the baseline, whereas no byssino

Respiratory symptoms, lung function and cell surface markers in a group of hemp fiber processors.

BACKGROUND: Hemp dust exposure is associated with byssinosis and accelerated lung loss in longitudinal studies. The immunological changes associated with hemp dust exposure are less well understood. METHODS: We studied a small group of current male hemp processors with a mean age of 43 years. Questionnaire data, lung function, serial FEV(1) and blood were collected from all workers. RESULTS: In total, seven workers (64%) complained of at least one respiratory symptom (one with byssinosis). The mean percentage predicted FEV(1) was 91.5, FVC 97.7, PEF 92.1, and FEF(25-75) 79.5. Serial FEV(1) m

Differential diagnosis of byssinosis by blood histamine and pulmonary function test: a review and an appraisal.

A study was conducted on byssinotic (N = 8) and nonbyssinotic (N = 16) mill workers exposed to cotton dust and on controls (N = 15) from a cotton dust-free zone. They were examined for chest tightness and breathlessness during successive days from Mondays to Fridays. In addition to monitoring the workers only on Mondays after shift work, their blood histamine levels and pulmonary function tests such as FEV1, PEFR, and FEF25-75% (PEFR represents airflow of larger airways, FEF25-75% reflects airflow in smaller airways, and FEV1 represents airflow in both central and peripheral airways) were scre

Dust-induced interstitial lung disease in the tropics.

Inhalation of dusts is an important cause of interstitial lung disease in the tropical countries such as India. While dusts of organic origin, such as the cotton dust causing byssinosis, generally cause bronchial or bronchiolar involvement and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, inorganic metallic dusts cause progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Silicosis, coal workers' pneumoconiosis, and asbestosis are the three most commonly recognized forms of pneumoconiotic pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary tuberculosis is an important complication seen in up to 50% of patients of silicosis in some reports from India. T

Stipatosis or hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by esparto (Stipa tenacissima) fibers.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis or extrinsic allergic alveolitis may be defined as an immunological pulmonary disease caused by a variety of antigens reaching the lungs through inhaled organic and inorganic dusts derived from different sources, although they are usually occupational. Farmer's lung and pigeon breeder's lung are probably the most well-known types of hypersensitivity pneumonitis worldwide. Esparto grass (Stipa tenacissima), which is a grammineous plant which is commonly found in the Mediterranean countries, has a wide variety of uses. Esparto fiber is used for the manufacturing of r

Mechanisms of endotoxin-induced airway and pulmonary vascular hyperreactivity in mice.

Endotoxin is thought to contribute to pulmonary hyperresponsiveness in byssinosis, asthma, and the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of this phenomenon in the isolated, blood-free perfused mouse lung. Perfusion with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) had no effect on pulmonary resistance or pulmonary artery pressure, but induced airway hyperreactivity (AHR) to methacholine (MCh) and pulmonary vascular hyperreactivity (VHR) to platelet-activating factor (PAF). Blockade of the thromboxane/endoperoxide (TP) receptor with SQ29.548 completely pro

Byssinosis.

Byssinosis as a nonspecific chronic respiratory disease in textile workers exposed to cotton, flax, jute, hemp and sisal is described. Opinions about aetiopathogenesis are presented. The following chapters are focused on clinical symptoms and functional lung changes. Classification of the disease is described afterwards. Finally, the necessity of medical and technical measures to prevent the development of this disease in textile workers is emphasised.

Respiratory symptoms in Lancashire textile weavers.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate a large population of cotton textile weavers for reported respiratory symptoms relative to occupational factors, smoking, and exposure to dust. Cotton processing is known to produce a respiratory disease known as byssinosis particularly in the early processes of cotton spinning. Relatively little is known about the respiratory health of the cotton weavers who produce cloth from spun cotton. By the time cotton is woven many of the original contaminants have been removed. METHODS: 1295 operatives from a target population of 1428 were given an interviewer led respirato

Tannin inhibits the cAMP-beta-adrenergic receptor pathway in bovine tracheal epithelium.

Tannin, isolated from cotton bracts, inhibits chloride secretion in airway epithelium. In bovine tracheal epithelial cells, tannin (25 micrograms/ml) blunted isoproterenol (Iso)-stimulated adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation. Inhibition was time and dose dependent, with 52 +/- 5% (mean +/- SE, n = 6) inhibition at 60 min and 82 +/- 9% (n = 3) inhibition at 8 h. Inhibition was reversible starting at 4 h. Low-molecular-mass tannin (1,000-5,000 Da) had no effect on Iso-stimulated cAMP accumulation, whereas N-acetylcysteine, which interacts with cysteine residues, blocked the

[Prevalence of respiratory diseases in the textile industry. Relation with dust levels].

Many workers in the textile industry have respiratory symptoms that are related to their work environment. In this study we observed the dust level conditions of eleven textile industries of the North of Portugal. The dust levels determined were between 0.1 mg/m3 and 1.25 mg/m3, in many cases above the Portuguese standard levels of exposure (VLE). For these dust levels we found a prevalence of 23% of workers with respiratory symptoms with occupational characteristics in 10.8%, and 5.7% presenting byssinosis. Workers exposed to cotton fibres in spinning areas have the highest prevalence of symp

Byssinosis: role of polymer length on the effect of tannin on the airway beta-adrenergic receptor.

Tannin, isolated from cotton bracts and implicated in the pathogenesis of byssinosis, inhibits isoproterenol and forskolin-stimulated cAMP release from airway cells in part by decreasing cell surface beta-adrenergic receptor number and uncoupling the beta-adrenergic receptor from its stimulatory G-protein (Gs) and in part by inhibiting adenylyl cyclase activity. We have hypothesized that cotton tannin, because of its long polymer length, interacts with the hydrophobic binding pocket of the beta-adrenergic receptor and alters beta-adrenergic receptor binding and Gs coupling. In these studies, t

Chronic bronchitis in textile workers.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cotton is known to produce a specific occupational disease known as byssinosis. A large population of textile workers was investigated to determine whether such exposure was also associated with chronic bronchitis once other possible aetiological factors had been accounted for. METHODS: A total of 2991 workers were investigated for the presence of symptoms compatible with chronic bronchitis. An MRC adapted respiratory questionnaire and MRC definition of chronic bronchitis were used for diagnostic labelling. Current and lifetime exposure to dust was estimated by persona

[Exposure to endotoxins in the environment. Occurrence and health hazards].

Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharides from the outer cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. Exposure to endotoxins can take place in industries where organic material is handled, in agriculture, in garbage handling, and sewage treatment. Byssinosis defined as Monday chest tightness and slight dyspnoea in the work place has been related to endotoxin exposure in cotton mills, but studies indicate that similar symptoms may be found in other work places. Other symptoms are: Headache, nausea, gastrointestinal symptoms and influenza-like symptoms. Several studies have shown a decrease in FEV1 following e

[A prospective study on respiratory symptoms and functions in new employees exposed to cotton dust].

Sixty new employees in a cotton textile mill were followed up for five years to study their occurrence of byssinosis and its natural history. Results showed that the workers complained more cough, expectoration and other respiratory irritation symptoms at their early exposure to cotton dust, and the frequency of chest tightness in them reached the peak one year after exposure and remained at higher level later. Stratified analysis showed that all the respiratory symptoms did not correlate with their smoking habits, specific body constitution, etc. Forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1)
