Fatal starvation is a rare cause of death in industrialised countries. In such cases, investigation of death is never an easy task for forensic pathologists who need to couple autopsy findings with full investigation of the crime scene and family record to establish if death results from deliberate neglect, maltreatment and withholding of food. Views and policies about eating and drinking in labour vary widely across the world. There is an increasing trend towards allowing food and fluids during labour, although little scientific data exist on its influence on the course of labour. Evidence-based recommendations in the form of a guideline on eating and drinking in labour is still lacking. Thus, the purpose of the present paper was to review the current literature to establish whether there is evidence for restricting or allowing food and fluids during normal labour.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally postoperative oral intake is withheld until the return of bowel function. There has been concern that early oral intake would result in vomiting and severe paralytic ileus with subsequent aspiration pneumonia, wound dehiscence, and anastomotic leakage. However, supporting scientific evidence for this traditional practice is lacking and there are potential benefits from early postoperative oral intake.
