Chest radiotherapy (XRT) plays a crucial role in the treatment of a multitude of cancers including breast, lung, esophageal, and lymphoma. Although XRT enhances cancer survival rates, it may also expose healthy bystander tissues to radiation, potentially leading to severe complications. Initially considered relatively resistant to radiation damage, the heart has been shown over the past 4 decades to be susceptible to radiation-induced cardiovascular toxicity and despite advances in XRT which can minimize radiation exposure to heart tissue, no cardiac radiation dose is entirely safe. The clinic

BACKGROUND: Although advancements in cancer therapies have substantially improved the survival of cancer patients, these treatments may also result in acute or chronic lung injury. Cancer treatment-related lung injury (CTLI) presents with a diverse array of clinical manifestations and can involve multiple sites. Due to the lack of specific diagnostic protocols, CTLI can deteriorate rapidly and may be life-threatening if not promptly addressed. Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted consensus document on the diagnosis and management of CTLI.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel comprisi

Background/Objectives: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a frequent complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), representing the most common extra-articular manifestation (with a prevalence of about 10-60%) and the second cause of mortality. Spondyloarthritides (SpAs) are chronic arthritides that share with RA both a similar disease burden and similar therapeutical approaches. The evaluation of ILD is challenging, given the low sensitivity of X-ray and pulmonary function tests, and the radiation exposure linked to repetitive HRCT. Lung ultrasound (LUS) has shown potential in the evaluation of

While breast cancer treatment outcomes have improved significantly through multidisciplinary approaches including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, the incidence of non-neoplastic pulmonary complications has also increased. Accurate interpretation of chest imaging is essential for managing these adverse events. This review outlines the major radiological findings of pulmonary injury during breast cancer treatment, focusing on two primary categories: drug-associated interstitial lung disease (DILD) and radiotherapy-associated lung injury (RLI). Regarding DILD, its clinical features,

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder mainly affecting joints, yet the systemic inflammation can influence other organs and tissues. The objective of this study was to unravel the ameliorative capability of Ondansetron (O) or β-sitosterol (BS) against inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress that complicates Extra-articular manifestations (EAM) in liver, kidney, lung, and heart of arthritic and arthritic irradiated rats.
METHODS: This was accomplished by exposing adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rats to successive weekly fractions of total body

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has high heterogeneity in etiologies and clinical manifestations. Expiratory Computed tomography (CT) can effectively assess air trapping, aiding in disease diagnosis. However, due to concerns about radiation exposure and cost, expiratory CT is not routinely performed. Recent work on synthesizing expiratory CT has primarily focused on imaging features while neglecting patient-specific pulmonary function.
METHODS: To address these issues, we developed a novel model named BreathVisionNet that incorporates pulmonary function

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic condition typically affecting both lungs; however, cases of unilateral pulmonary fibrosis are exceedingly rare and often result from specific unilateral inflammatory conditions like radiation pneumonitis or infection. An even rarer occurrence is the unilateral proximal interruption of a pulmonary artery (PIPA), a developmental anomaly resulting from the failed connection of the sixth aortic arch to the pulmonary trunk. This condition can manifest alone or alongside other cardiac abnormalities. There are limited reports of pulmonary fibrosis associated with PIPA.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma characterized by the malignant transformation of lymphoid tissue at sites affected by chronic inflammation. Pleural marginal zone lymphoma (PMZL) is an infrequent manifestation of this condition. We report a case of PMZL co-occurring with primary lung adenocarcinoma. This case involves an 88-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency department with recurrent pleural effusions and symptoms suggestive of decompensated heart failure. A thoracentesis of the effusion revealed an aspergillus population.

Tracheobronchial amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by amyloid deposits on the tracheal and bronchial tissue. Patients with tracheobronchial amyloidosis are asymptomatic or exhibit symptoms, such as chronic wheezing, dyspnea, and cough, that are common manifestations of other disorders, including asthma. A bronchoscopic tissue biopsy using Congo red staining is the key standard for diagnosing tracheobronchial amyloidosis. Treatment strategies vary depending on the degree of airway obstruction. If the obstruction is significant and the patient is symptomatic, repeated bronchoscopic tre

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major infectious diseases in the world with a high incidence rate. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is a key and difficult challenge in the prevention and treatment of TB. Early, rapid, and accurate diagnosis of DR-TB is essential for selecting appropriate and personalized treatment and is an important means of reducing disease transmission and mortality. In recent years, imaging diagnosis of DR-TB has developed rapidly, but there is a lack of consistent understanding. To this end, the Infectious Disease Imaging Group, Infectious Disease Branch, Chinese

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and considered as a serious carcinogen to humans. Continuous radioactive decay of this gas emits high-energy alpha particles. Long-term radon exposure induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response, which results in chronic lung diseases. However, biological effects after radon exposure in other organs have been rarely reported. As the outermost organ of the human body, the skin suffers from environmental damage to agents such as air pollution. Epidemiological studies indicated that areas with high level of radon had a high incidence of skin c

Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a syndromic inborn error of immunity (IEI) characterized by genomic instability, defective reparation of the DNA double-strand breaks, and hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation disturbing cellular homeostasis. The role of imaging diagnostics and the conscious choice of safe and advantageous imaging technique, as well as its correct interpretation, are crucial in the diagnostic process and monitoring of children with A-T. This study aimed at defining the role of a radiologist in the early diagnosis of A-T, as well as in detecting and tracking disease complication

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is one of the most clinically-challenging toxicities and dose-limiting factors during and/or after thoracic radiation therapy for oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). With limited effective protective drugs against RILI, the main strategy to reduce the injury is strict adherence to dose-volume restrictions of normal lungs. RILI can manifest as acute radiation pneumonitis with cellular injury, cytokine release and cytokine recruitment to inflammatory infiltrate, and subsequent chronic radiation pulmonary fibrosis. Pirfenidone inhibits th

INTRODUCTION: Organizing pneumonia (OP) is an idiopathic interstitial pneumonia characterized radiologically by the patchy peripheral areas of ground-glass opacities and consolidation. It is commonly associated with a variety of conditions such as connective tissue diseases (CTD), drugs, infections, malignancy, radiation exposure, post-transplant, and other interstitial pneumonia. There are no specific clinical manifestations unless there is an underlying etiology. We present a series of such cases.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to identify the clinical characteristics and eti

Malignancy accounts for approximately 15-20% of moderate to large pericardial effusions. Pulmonary and colon are the most common primary causes. Large pleural effusions tend to present with a less dramatic clinical picture. It is because fluids tend to build up slowly, giving enough time to the pericardial sac to accommodate it until pressure reaches a critical value causing right heart chambers to collapse. In this report, we present the case of a 51-year-old male with cardiac tamponade as the first manifestation of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The patient presented with shortness of breath and

BACKGROUND As use of immune checkpoint inhibitors consistently grows, so does knowledge of immune-related adverse events. Pleural complications from PD-L1 inhibitors such as atezolizumab have never been reported. We describe the first reported case of biopsy-proven pleuritis manifesting as recurrent pleural effusion in a patient treated with atezolizumab. CASE REPORT A 66-year-old woman with history of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer presented with a new pleural effusion. She was previously treated with carboplatin, etoposide, and atezolizumab followed by atezolizumab maintenance, but t

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) encompasses any lung toxicity induced by radiation therapy (RT) and manifests acutely as radiation pneumonitis and chronically as radiation pulmonary fibrosis. Because most patients with thoracic and breast malignancies are expected to undergo RT in their lifetime, many with curative intent, the population at risk is significant. Furthermore, indications for thoracic RT are expanding given the advent of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) or stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for early-stage lung cancer in nonsurgical candidates as well as oli

Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a progressive multisystem autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the AT-mutated (ATM) gene. Early onset AT in children is characterized by cerebellar degeneration, leading to motor impairment. Lung disease and cancer are the two most common causes of death in AT patients. Accelerated thymic involution may contribute to the cancer, and recurrent and/or chronic respiratory infections may be a contributing factor to lung disease in AT. AT patients have fertility issues, are highly sensitive to ionizing radiation and they present oculocutaneous telangiect

Cutaneous sarcoidosis is not an uncommon disorder, and the skin can be the sole manifestation in about 10% of patients. However, when the involved anatomical area of the cutaneous sarcoidosis is the scalp and it presents as a scarring alopecia, there is an increased risk of a systemic disease (1,2). A 79-year-old Caucasian male patient presented to our Institute with annular and painless plaques of the scalp, with variable diameter, showing a reddish and yellowish color (Figure 1, a). Furthermore, a scleroderma-like atrophy of the skin with an exposure of the underlying vasculature was present
