Aging-related predictive factors for oxygenation improvement and mortality in COVID-19 and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients exposed to prone position: A multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients are more susceptible to Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and are more likely to develop it in severe forms, (e.g., Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome [ARDS]). Prone positioning is a treatment strategy for severe ARDS; however, its response in the elderly population remains poorly understood. The main objective was to evaluate the predictive response and mortality of elderly patients exposed to prone positioning due to ARDS-COVID-19. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter cohort study involved 223 patients aged ≥ 65 years, who received prone position sessions

Coronavirus One of the New Etiologies of Facial Nerve Paralysis? A Case Report Study.

Coronaviruses are important pathogens in humans and animals. Two years ago, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of pneumonia and adult respiratory distress syndrome. These viruses have many clinical features, and new features are created daily. Bell's palsy is sporadic facial nerve palsy. The main reason of Bell's palsy is not recognized. Many viruses, such as herpes simplex or herpes zosters, have been previously identified as Bell's palsy. This case report seeks to explain the occurrence of Bell's palsy in a patient infected with coronavirus. The polymerase chain reaction test of a

High incidence of adult respiratory distress syndrome associated with amphetamine use in the burn population: a retrospective cohort study.

UNLABELLED: A high incidence of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is observed in patients with a history of amphetamine use with limited studies addressing this exact topic. The authors sought to understand and compare the clinical features of patients experiencing amphetamine-associated lung injury with features of similar patients naïve to amphetamines, in a population of burn patients. Patients in this population tend to be young with few comorbidities offering a unique opportunity to study the relationship between amphetamine use and ARDS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 188 pa

Acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis following influenza infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis is a life-threatening condition leading to shock and multiorgan failure. Although prevalent in the general population, the incidence during pregnancy is low, with a high maternal and fetal mortality rate. The highest incidence is in the third trimester/early postpartum period. Infectious etiology for acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis is rare with only a handful of cases following influenza infection being documented in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Sinhalese pregnant lady in the third trimester presented with an upper respiratory trac

Race and Sex Disparities in Lower Extremity Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Database Study.

INTRODUCTION: Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is successful in improving health-related quality of life. However, outcomes vary in the literature due to modifiable and non-modifiable factors. Modifiable factors consist of body mass index (BMI), nutrition, and tobacco use. Non-modifiable risk factors include age, race, sex, and socioeconomic status. Prior literature has focused on racial disparities in terms of the utilization of lower extremity arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of race and sex on the in-hospital complication rate, length of stay, and charges ass

Novel opportunities from bioimaging to understand the trafficking and maturation of intracellular pulmonary surfactant and its role in lung diseases.

Pulmonary surfactant (PS), a complex mixture of lipids and proteins, is essential for maintaining proper lung function. It reduces surface tension in the alveoli, preventing collapse during expiration and facilitating re-expansion during inspiration. Additionally, PS has crucial roles in the respiratory system's innate defense and immune regulation. Dysfunction of PS contributes to various respiratory diseases, including neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), COVID-19-associated ARDS, and ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), among others. Identification of an allele-specific transcription factor binding interaction that regulates PLA2G2A gene expression.

The secreted phospholipase A 2 (sPLA 2 ) isoform, sPLA 2 -IIA, has been implicated in a variety of diseases and conditions, including bacteremia, cardiovascular disease, COVID-19, sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, and certain cancers. Given its significant role in these conditions, understanding the regulatory mechanisms impacting its levels is crucial. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including rs11573156, that are associated with circulating levels of sPLA 2 -IIA.
