[Host factors in asbestos-associated disease. A study in twins (author's transl)].

Observations in two pairs of identical twins illustrate the importance of genetic factors in determining the outcome of exposure to asbestos in relation to pleural plaques and bronchogenic carcinoma. The first pair of twins, laggers with french railroad (S.N.C.F.), were discovered fortuitously, after only several years exposure, to have bilateral pleural plaques and calcification at the same site on the axillary and diaphragmatic surfaces. The second set of twins developed epidermoïd bronchial carcinoma : one at the right hilum, the other postero-basally on the right in 1969 and 1977 respectiv

[The metrology of mineral fibres in thoracoscopic lung and pleural biopsies. Preliminary results (author's transl)].

Metrology of mineral fibres by electron microscopy was carried out in thoracoscopy specimens ("normal" parietal pleura, pleural plaque, tumour, lung) obtained from different sites in 19 patients: 9 exposed to asbestos and 10 non-exposed controls. With regard to results concerning the parietal pleura, the differences in exposure of the patients (as revealed by history) were not reflected by metrological characteristics (nature and number of fibres, size, topographical distribution) and it was impossible to distinguish the exposed cases from the controls. The number of fibres ("non-measurable pr

Prevalence of asbestos related lung disease among employees in non-asbestos industries.

Employees from two non-asbestos industries wee examined to assess the prevalence of asbestos-related lung disease. Of the 214 employees, one suffered from a malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and in 13 (6.1%), pleural plaques were diagnosed radiologically. the plaques were symptomless and not associated with any disturbance in respiratory function. The sole source of asbestos fibre in one factory was the asbestos insulation surrounding steam and hot water pipes similar to that found throughout industry. Exposure occurred as the result of the way in which this insulation has been handled rout

Increased lung stiffness of persons with pleural plaques.

Forty-five men with asbestos-related pleural plaques detected at a health screening centre were investigated with measurement of lung volumes, airways resistance, ventilatory capacity, transfer factor, gas distribution, closing volume and static recoil pressures of the lung. The men were subjectively healthy, had confirmed exposure to asbestos and had normal chest radiograms apart from the presence of pleural plaques. Most of the men had been exposed to small or moderate amounts of asbestos with a mean duration of 39 years since first exposure. Sixty-seven per cent of the men were smokers or e

Pleural plaques and lung asbestos bodies in the general population: an autoptical and clinical-radiological survey.

Of 218 necropsies of male subjects, pleural hyaline plaques were detected in 67 (30%). The prevalence of pleural plaques was found to be related to age at death and to history of previous occupational contact with asbestos. The presence of asbestos bodies in lungs was also associated with pleural plaques; however, the reliability of the presence of ferruginous bodies as an indicator of exposure to asbestos is questioned. The role of environmental exposure will be better demonstrated at the end of an investigation on place of residence, which is still in progress. Chest X-rays showed little sen

Asbestosis in the industries of the Barcelona area.

This presentation is the result of the survey of eight industries with asbestosis risk in the Barcelona area (two of fibro-cement, three of auto brakes, two of textiles, and one of insulation materials). Of 1,472 workers, 271 or 18.5% have asbestosis. Pleural involvement in asbestosis is twice as common as that of the lung, 15.7% versus 8.5%. Pulmonary asbestosis without pleural participation is seen in only 2.6% of cases. Pleural plaques, calcified and not calcified, are detected in only a few cases. There is a definite correlation between the incidence of asbestosis and the exposure time: fr

Presence of asbestos bodies in organs other than the lung.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that subjects with many asbestos bodies in their lungs at autopsy would also have asbestos bodies in various other organs. The subjects included 19 cases with diagnosis of asbestosis at death (two of these had mesothelioma, five had lung cancer) and 18 with pleural plaques but not asbestosis. Occupational histories were obtained from relatives. In subjects occupationally exposed to asbestos, large numbers of asbestos bodies were found in the lungs, and in most of these, asbestos bodies were found in many of the other organs examined. In the 18 cas

[Asbestosic pleural calcifications and the associated pathology (study of 32 cases)].

The presence of calcified pleural plaques together with asbestos professional exposition is the sign of patent dust inhaling and can be related to asbestos pathology. The observations on a homogeneous group of 32 cases of asbestosic pleural calcifications are analyzed. The frequency of malignant pleural and bronchial tumours (2 pleural mesothelioma, 3 bronchial epithelioma) is classical. That there was no serious pulmonary fibrosis can be attributed to the conditions of dust inhaling. There was a relatively high frequency of pleural effusions, the benignity of which could not always be ascerta

Investigation and analysis of asbestos fibers and accompanying minerals in biological materials.

A method is described for isolating asbestos fibers contained in biological tissues. It consists in incinerating the biological material in activated oxygen at 150 degrees C, and attacking the ash by 1N HC1 for 18 hr. The residue is then filtered on a membrane covered with a carbon film. Electron microscope examination of the deposit makes it possible to determine fiber concentrations when the weight or volume of primary material is known, and to make size analyses. By x-ray diffraction, the mineralogical nature of the asbestos is determined by comparison with an aluminum reference diagram. Fo

The pathology of parietal pleural plaques.

The incidence, morbid anatomy, histology, and relationship of hyaline pleural plaques to exposure to asbestos has been studied. Plaques were found in 12.3% of 334 hospital necropsies (in an urban population in Glasgow, 41 cases). In 85.3% (35 cases) asbestos bodies were found in the lungs. There is evidence of a dose-response relationship between the number of asbestos bodies found in the lungs and the presence of pleural plaques. The selective distribution of plaques within the pleural cavities suggests that mechanical factors play a part in their localization. Histological examination contri

Migration of asbestos fibres from subcutaneous injection sites in mice.

Crocidolite asbestos fibres, suspended in physiological saline, were injected subcutaneously into one or both flanks of 95 CBA/Lac female mice; 75 control mice received injections of saline only. Most animals were killed at chosen intervals of between 2 and 42 days after injection but some were left for longer periods of up to 623 days. At autopsy, many lymphoid and non-lymphoid structures were removed and examined for the presence of asbestos by the following techniques: haematoxylin and eosin staining followed by conventional and polarized light microscopy; Perl's stain; microincineration fo
