Endemic pleural plaques are reported from many parts of the world. In Central Europe and in Finland no connection with malignant mesotheliomas has been found, whereas this tumour is often encountered in areas in Turkey where endemic plaques also occur. There seem, however, to be differences in the radiological appearances found in these areas. Results of computed tomography and conventional radiology were compared during investigation of 17 patients with pleuropulmonary lesions from confirmed asbestosis. Computed tomography images appeared to provide improved data for detection and analysis of pleural plaques, particularly in the costovertebral grooves; false pleural images (associated shadows, fatty tissue) can be eliminated. The CT scan should occupy a place of choice for surveillance of subjects in contact with asbestos and presenting pleural anomalies.

The relationship between the occurrence of neoplastic diseases and the presence of pleural plaques was studied in a series of 1097 autopsies performed in Turin from the adult general population. In men, pleural plaques showed an association with the presence of laryngeal, pulmonary, esophageal, and colorectal cancer. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were analysed from 40 subjects with occupational asbestos exposure and 40 controls matched for age and smoking habits. The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma was made prospectively and noninvasively in four patients with the use of sonography, computed tomography, and sonographically guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy. We tabulated the computed tomographic (CT) findings in 14 consecutive patients who had proven malignant pleural mesotheliomas and were studied over a 3-year period. We also staged the disease in these patients, all of whom were men, aged 40-75 years (mean, 59), and had been exposed to asbestos at work. Computed tomography (CT) is generally superior to plain chest radiographs in differentiating pleural and pulmonary parenchymal lesions. We report a patient with asbestos exposure who had a rare interlobar pleural plaque involving the major fissure. In this patient CT suggested the presence of a lung nodule but the lateral chest radiograph indicated the correct diagnosis.

Clinical and postmortem materials from six dogs with a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma were studied retrospectively. The dogs were urban pets with clinical signs of malignant effusions. During the three years 1979-81, all patients with bronchial carcinoma of World Health Organisation types I to IV were given a questionnaire to determine occupation, smoking habits, and exposure to asbestos. Chest x rays were screened for the presence of pleural plaques. Of the men, 96.2% were current or ex-smokers, as were 71% of the women. In those who had never smoked 70% had an adenocarcinoma.
