Catamenial pneumothorax presenting as tension pneumothorax: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Catamenial pneumothorax is a rare condition. It may present with complications such as tension pneumothorax. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old nulliparous woman without a pre-existing diagnosis of endometriosis presented with recurrent episodes of chest tightness, breathlessness, and dizziness, occurring in relation to her menstrual cycle. Initial evaluation revealed a right-sided pneumothorax, requiring chest tube insertion. Although she experienced temporary improvement, symptoms recurred at the onset of her next menstrual period, with imaging confirming tension pneumothorax. V

Subcutaneous versus transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) avoids intravascular leads but does not provide chronic bradycardia pacing or antitachycardia pacing. We performed an updated systematic review and meta-analysis comparing S-ICD with transvenous ICD therapy, prioritising contemporary randomised evidence and clinically relevant device trade-offs. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 (PROSPERO: CRD420261328562), PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL were searched from inception and rerun on 14 September 2026. Predictive factors for prolonged hospitalization related to pneumothorax after CT-guided transthoracic needle biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax is consistently reported as the most prevalent complication of computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy. While most cases of pneumothorax resolve with conservative management strategies, some cases are linked to a more protracted clinical trajectory necessitating active intervention. However, few reports have described the clinical and procedural determinants of prolonged hospitalization after post-biopsy pneumothorax. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 1,457 CT-guided TTNB procedures performed at a tertiary referral center between January 2021 a

How Effective Is Saline Solution Infiltration During Coaxial Needle Withdrawal in Reducing the Incidence of Pneumothorax in CT-Guided Lung Biopsies?

Background/Objectives: This study evaluates whether saline infiltration during coaxial needle withdrawal reduces the incidence of pneumothorax (PTX) in CT-guided lung biopsies, potentially enhancing procedural safety. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 200 consecutive CT-guided core needle biopsies (18G) was conducted using our hospital's Radiology Department database. All procedures were performed between February 2022 and December 2024 by a single operator with 20 years of experience. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A (100 patients), receiving 10 mL of 0.9% saline solution dur

Pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, pneumoperitoneum, and SCE after colonic ESD: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has become a widely accepted technique for en bloc resection of colorectal laterally spreading tumors (LSTs). Although the procedure is generally considered safe, complications including bleeding and perforation may occur. The simultaneous development of pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, pneumoperitoneum, and extensive subcutaneous emphysema following colorectal ESD represents an exceptionally rare but potentially serious adverse event. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old female patient underwent ESD for a granular-type LST measuring 8 mm × 20 mm loca

Medical Malpractice Claims in Thoracic Surgery From 1986 to 2024.

Thoracic surgery-related malpractice claims recorded in Catalonia (Spain) were collected from the Council of Medical Associations of Catalonia (CCMC, 1986-2024) and the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut, 2017-2024) databases. Of a total of 15,696 claims, 56 (0.4%) corresponded to the field of thoracic surgery. Lung cancer (51.8%) and pneumothorax (8.9%) were the most common diagnoses. Death occurred in 18 patients (31.2%). In relation to the reasons of allegations, in one patient with lung cancer undergoing lobectomy who died in the postoperative period, this information was missing. In the rem

A leakage-controlled multiscale contextual involution-inception framework for spectral-spatial classification of neonatal hyperspectral images.

Early and reliable assessment of neonatal conditions is important in neonatal intensive care units, where non-invasive imaging approaches may provide complementary information for clinical evaluation. Hyperspectral imaging provides a non-invasive means of capturing spatially resolved spectral information from neonatal tissue; however, its high dimensionality and the limited availability of clinical samples make robust model development challenging. This study proposes the Multiscale Contextual Involution-Inception Network (MC-I2Net), a leakage-controlled framework for neonatal HSI classificati

Electrical impedance tomography in neonatal respiratory diseases: a clinical review of applications and evidence.

Neonatal respiratory diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care settings, with management complicated by the limitations of current monitoring tools. Chest radiography provides only static snapshots and cannot capture the dynamic evolution of lung aeration, while lung ultrasound, though portable, remains operator-dependent and incapable of quantifying regional ventilation. Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) has emerged as a noninvasive, radiation free imaging modality that addresses these gaps by enabling real time, continuous visualization of regional lung

Late-Diagnosed Cystic Fibrosis with Co-Occurring CFTR 3849+10kbC>T and 5T Variants: A Case Report.

Background: The deep-intronic variant 3849+10kbC>T preserves residual CFTR function and is recurrently associated with pancreatic sufficiency, normal or borderline sweat chloride and diagnosis beyond early childhood. A co-occurring poly-T 5T allele adds a second layer of uncertainty: its penetrance depends on the TG repeat carried in cis, and its contribution to the phenotype can be weighed only once its phase relative to the second variant has been established. Case Presentation: A boy with recurrent respiratory infections from the age of three was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 12 years,

Prehospital Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma with 5G-enabled Real-time Telesupervision for the Early Detection of Intra-abdominal Hemorrhage and Trauma Team Activation: A Case Report and Feasibility Insight.

Prehospital ultrasound, particularly the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (EFAST), has emerged as a valuable tool in the early identification of life-threatening conditions, including hemoperitoneum and pneumothorax. Current evidence supports the role of prehospital ultrasound in improving diagnostic accuracy, facilitating triage decisions, and enhancing communication with receiving trauma centers. However, its application in detecting intra-abdominal hemorrhage and expediting trauma team activation (TTA) remains underutilized in many emergency medical systems. This case h

Case Report: Catamenial pneumothorax: clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and management - a report of two cases with a review of the literature.

Pneumothorax is a pathological condition in which gas enters the pleural cavity due to trauma, surgery, positive-pressure ventilation, thoracentesis, or other causes, leading to compression and collapse of the lung tissue. It exhibits a male predominance and can occur in all age groups. Catamenial pneumothorax, also referred to as thoracic endometriosis syndrome-associated pneumothorax, is a rare subtype. It is characterized by spontaneous and recurrent pneumothorax occurring in women of reproductive age during the perimenstrual period. Clinicians often fail to associate pneumothorax with the

Thoracoscopic Management of Recurrent Pneumothorax in an Adult Patient with Cri du Chat Syndrome and Severe Scoliosis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) is a rare genetic disorder that can be associated with scoliosis and marked thoracic deformity. Although scoliosis has been reported to be associated with an increased incidence of pneumothorax, reports of pneumothorax surgery in patients with severe scoliosis associated with CdCS are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of recurrent pneumothorax in an adult patient with CdCS associated with severe scoliosis who was successfully treated by thoracoscopic surgery. Bedside flexible bronchoscopy in the neonatal intensive care unit: Current evidence, clinical applications and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Lung ultrasound and targeted echocardiography let the neonatal team examine lungs and heart at the cot side, but neither shows the airway. Flexible bronchoscopy does, and it is increasingly performed inside the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: Narrative review of published series of flexible bronchoscopy in infants cared for in neonatal units, supported by pediatric intensive care studies and society standards. Certainty of evidence was not graded. RESULTS: Twelve neonatal series (652 infants) were identified; all but one were single-center and most were retrospectiv
