INTRODUCTION: Penetrating thoracic trauma is common and costly. Injuries are frequently and selectively amenable to non-operative management. Our selective approach to penetrating thoracic trauma is reviewed and the effectiveness of our clinical algorithms confirmed. Additionally, a basic cost analysis was undertaken to evaluate the financial impact of a selective nonoperative management approach to penetrating thoracic trauma.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to measure and to determine differences in tissue depth in the upper back for two prone positions and to stratify the results by body composition and sex of the patient. In addition, muscle thickness changes with positioning were assessed. This information is important for clinicians who dry needle in the thorax area, cognizant of the dangers of inadvertently piercing the pleura or lung tissue.

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are very useful tools in clinical medicine. It is important not only for the administration of medications or fluids but also the measurement of haemodynamic variables, especially in intensive care patients. CVC placement is a relatively safe procedure but may occasionally be associated with complications, such as pneumothorax, haemothorax, cardiac tamponade, sepsis and thrombosis. We aim to report an extraordinary case of bilateral hydrothorax due to CVC placement.

A 64-year-old man who presented with repeated bouts of pneumothorax was admitted to our hospital because of gradually progressive dyspnea and repeated episodes of a fever. The physiological, radiological and pathological findings were consistent with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE). INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary interstitial emphysema is a rare finding defined as abnormal air collection inside the lung interstitial tissues. Described more frequently in ventilated new-borns, pulmonary interstitial emphysema is an uncommon barotrauma-related complication in adults. Management and clinical sequelae are poorly described.

We describe the case of a 35-year-old man who presented in respiratory failure after influenza B infection requiring initiation of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and eventual pulmonary resection for necrotizing pneumonia. INTRODUCTION: We aimed to examine effectiveness of sodium hyaluronate-carboxymethly cellulose (NaH/CMC) for sealing pulmonary air leaks during postoperative period.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats. A linear insicion (length= 0.2 cm, depth= 0.1 cm) to the lung parenchyma on the inflated by a cutter was made. The animals were randomly divided; the control group (n= 8) and NaH/CMC-treated group (the study group, n= 8). Control group was left for physiologic healing while a NaH/CMC membrane was applied over the the incisional area in the study group.
