Chylothorax is an uncommon condition. It's characterized by the presence of chyle in the pleura. The most common causes are malignancy and trauma. When an underlying cause is excluded, the chylothorax is called idiopathic. We report a case of a 68 aged woman, admitted for abundant chylothorax. BACKGROUND: Hemothorax may be immediately life-threatening or lead to complications like empyema and fibrothorax. PURPOSE: To describe the CT features of complicated pleural tuberculosis in children and to define the use of CT in children with pleural tuberculosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CT findings in 11 children with complicated pleural tuberculosis were retrospectively analysed. CT was performed to evaluate persistent pleural thickening (n = 6) or a mass-like lesion (n = 5) detected on plain radiographs. A clotted haemothorax can develop any time after blunt chest trauma. Two cases are described in which late clotted haemothoraces developed which were treated by limited thoracotomy and evacuation of clots. Late clotted haemothorax may occur even in the absence of any abnormal initial clinical findings. We describe two cases of a bronchopleural fistula developing in a calcified fibrothorax several decades after the initial pleurisy. In a follow-up lasting many years, the fistulae are persistent, with only minor symptoms. We suggest that this benign course without serious illness is due to the fact that the calcified shell effectively seals off the infection, and that a conservative approach is likely to be successful.
