Long-term mortality and risk of chronic kidney disease in children following severe malaria complicated by acute kidney injury: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric acute kidney injury (AKI) is a complication of severe malaria, but its long-term outcomes remain poorly defined in low-income and middle-income countries. We aimed to evaluate the long-term association between paediatric AKI and kidney outcomes and mortality following severe malaria. METHODS: We pooled data from two prospective cohorts of Ugandan children (ie, those aged 6 months-12 years) admitted to hospital with severe malaria between 2008 and 2017. Children with stored admission blood samples available for creatinine measurement were included in the analysis. Surviv

Minimal supply chain and forecasting testing volumes for clinical bacteriology laboratories in resource-limited settings for individual patient care: a costing study.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate access to clinical bacteriology testing in low-resource settings compromises individual patient care and contributes to antimicrobial resistance. Funders, policy makers, and health administrators working to expand bacteriology testing in sub-Saharan Africa require evidence-based guidance. The aim of this study was to assemble a costed consensus list of minimum equipment and consumables required to implement and operate a functional clinical bacteriology laboratory in secondary and tertiary care hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa, to guide funders and health administrators.

Influenza A and B Viral Shedding in Adults Immunized With Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) induces mucosal immunity through limited viral replication in the upper respiratory tract, but postvaccination viral shedding dynamics and their clinical correlates remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: We evaluated 283 healthy adults (108 in 2023-2024, 175 during the 2024-2025 influenza seasons) following intranasal LAIV administration. Nasal swabs were collected on post-LAIV days 1, 2-4, and 5-7 to quantify influenza A and B RNA by RT-PCR. Viral detection, shedding duration and burden, clearance kinetics, and probability of detectio

Privatized Health Care System in Times of Crisis: South Korea's Health Care System Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a global public health crisis that demanded a "whole-of-society" response. In many countries, coordinating efforts across public and private health care sectors proved challenging. Yet South Korea maintained one of the world's lowest excess mortality rates despite having a predominantly privatized health care system, with 90.3% of hospital beds privately owned. This outcome was enabled in part by the government's strategy of disproportionately mobilizing and repurposing public hospitals as dedicated COVID-19 treatment facilities. These hospitals, historically few in n

Prehospital Assessment and Treatment of Infants and Toddlers in Respiratory Distress: A Retrospective Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Prehospital recognition of upper versus lower airway disease in infants or young children is critical as management strategies differ. A minimal amount is known regarding how well these distinctions are made in the field and whether they are associated with changes in care. We describe patient characteristics, emergency medical services (EMS) clinician impressions, assessments, and prehospital treatments for patients under 3 years old who were diagnosed in the emergency department (ED) with upper airway disease (croup) or lower airway disease (acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or as

Student-authored expressions of gratitude as an alternative approach to ceremonial body donor commemoration: An experience from a New Sri Lankan Medical Faculty.

The sustainability of body donation programs is contingent not only on cultural and religious frameworks that motivate altruistic giving, but also on the institutional practices that honor donors and maintain public trust. In Sri Lanka, Theravada Buddhist principles of dana (generosity) and karuna (compassion) underpin a well-established culture of body donation. The formal memorial ceremonies have served as the conventional expression of institutional gratitude to body donors. The Faculty of Medicine (FOM) at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL), however, faced successive and compounding ad

Physics-guided framework for climate dependent disease prediction: coupling compartment model with deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Influenza-like illness (ILI) serves as a representative climate dependent disease due to its climate sensitivity, widespread transmission, and significant impact on public health and societal functioning, highlighting the urgent need for reliable ILI prediction techniques that combine climate factors to support effective prevention and intervention. Existing compartmental model-based methods have limited ability to incorporate climate data and often struggle to capture the complex ILI transmission patterns. Many deep learning models generally lack interpretability and tend to overl

A global assessment of the level of trust in information sources and adherence to COVID-19 related preventive health behaviors: cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: Initial management of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) focused on preventing spread and providing supportive care. Authorities disseminated disease information and enforced preventive measures. This intricate task was affected by factors such as initial emotional distress or perceived risk, which influenced adherence to public health recommendations. This study examined the association between trust in local health authorities and national/regional leaders who have provided information about COVID-19 and adherence to COVID-19 preventive behaviors. METHODS: Data from the Interna

The impact of China's non-pharmaceutical interventions on economic growth during COVID-19: a provincial-level panel analysis.

This study examines the economic impacts of non-pharmaceutical interventions implemented in China during the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing a provincial-level panel dataset from 2020Q1 to 2022Q4. We employ a pooled OLS model with panel-corrected standard errors (PCSE) to address cross-sectional dependence, serial correlation, and heteroskedasticity, while a fixed-effects instrumental variable (FE-IV) model is used to resolve endogeneity from reverse causality. The analysis reveals that NPIs significantly reduced quarterly GDP growth, with coefficients ranging from -0.078 to 0.154 across models.
