BACKGROUND: There are only small experiences with mechanical ventilation via nasal mask in childhood.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients using NIPPV (9 patients aged 4 to 18 years and 2 patients with cystic fibrosis aged 20 and 25 years).
RESULTS: NIPPV was effective in all 11 patients. Seven patients needed supplemental oxygen. Theophyllin, Almitrin and Salbutamol could support the nasal ventilation in special conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Noninvasive mask ventilation is in some cases of respiratory failure the treatment of choice. It is used in cases of acute respiratory failure. We report about perioperative application of noninvasive mask ventilation.

Respiratory failure is the most common cause of death in children with neuromuscular disease (NMD). This article provides a conceptual framework for understanding failure of the respiratory pump in these children. Pump failure can be attributed to faulty control of respiration, to mechanical defects, and to respiratory muscle fatigue. In most patients with NMD, respiratory drive is intact. We retrospectively studied the relation between corticasteroid therapy, hypogammaglobulinemia (HG), and recurrent infections in 37 infants with moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We describe successful placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy via the transnasal approach in a patient who required intermaxillary fixation for an open mandible fracture, and required enteral nutrition for chronic respiratory failure and traumatic brain injury. This method may be useful in other cases where the transoral route is not available for endoscopic insertion of enterostomy tubes.

BACKGROUND: In recent years non-invasive ventilatory techniques have been used successfully in the treatment of acute on chronic respiratory failure (ACRF), but careful selection of patients is essential and a comatose state may represent an exclusion criterion. METHODS: Saccharin nasal transit time was measured as an index of nasal mucociliary clearance.
