A cross-sectional study into the prevalence and conformational risk factors of BOAS across fourteen brachycephalic dog breeds.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is known to occur as a common condition in short-skulled (brachycephalic) dogs, but has been intensively studied only in three breeds: the Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug. This study investigates the frequency and severity of BOAS in a further 14 breeds in the UK pet population: Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dogue de Bordeaux, Griffon Bruxellois, Japanese Chin, King Charles Spaniel, Maltese, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The respiratory functional grading (RFG)

Hidden bronchial obstruction in atopic dermatitis: just like wheezy infants.

OBJECTIVE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is frequently associated with respiratory comorbidities, yet data on pulmonary function in infancy remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate pulmonary function in infants with AD using tidal breath analysis (TBA) and to compare these findings with those of wheezy infants and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: A total of 115 infants under three years of age were categorized into three groups: infants with AD without any respiratory disease or symptoms (n = 50), infants with wheezing (n = 35), and HCs (n = 30), and their data were retrospectively analyzed. Condylar morphology in skeletal Class II malocclusion: relationship to mandibular retrognathia and airway stenosis.

This study aimed to establish a novel cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based classification of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar morphology and investigate its correlation with mandibular retrognathia and airway stenosis in skeletal Class II malocclusion. In total, 353 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The condylar morphology was classified into three types (normal, erosion, and stump; NES classification) based on coronal axis CBCT shape. Condylar height, width, and radian value (R) were measured. Mandibular retrognathia was assessed cephalometrically, and airway dimensions were

Thinking outside the (voice) box: considering respiratory function in presbyphonia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbyphonia has long been framed as a laryngeal disorder driven by presbylaryngis, yet emerging evidence suggests that age-related respiratory decline plays a central but under-recognized role in symptomatic vocal aging. This review synthesizes work on respiratory aging, speech-breathing patterns, and respiratory muscle performance in older adults with presbyphonia, and evaluates early attempts to target these systems in rehabilitation. RECENT FINDINGS: Laryngeal atrophy and glottic insufficiency are common in aging but do not reliably predict presbyphonia. Age-related red

A Chronic Lung Cavity Concealing an Unsuspected Foreign Body Aspiration in a Child.

BACKGROUND: Delayed foreign body aspiration (FBA) mimicking a lung abscess is rare in children. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old girl presented with fever, cough, and a cavitary lung lesion initially diagnosed as lung abscess. Poor response to antibiotics prompted bronchoscopy, which revealed a pumpkin seed shell fragment causing obstruction and granulation. History revealed a choking episode eight months prior. RESULTS: The foreign body was removed bronchoscopically, and the patient recovered fully. CONCLUSIONS: Occult FBA should be considered in children with focal cavitary lung lesions, e

Biofeedback vs Respiratory Retraining for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) presents as episodic shortness of breath that can range in severity and may greatly impact daily life. Respiratory retraining therapy (RRT) provided by speech-language pathologists is the standard of care. Limited data exist on treatment effectiveness, with no published randomized clinical trials comparing treatments. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of video biofeedback (directly showing participants their laryngeal anatomy as they perform breathing exercises) compared with RRT in the treatment of episodic, inhalational dyspnea attrib

Analysis of First and Second Sleep Environments in Unexplained Sudden Deaths in Infants Based on Scene Reenactment Data.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that a safe sleep environment consist of an infant lying supine on a separate, uncluttered, approved sleep surface. Infant awakenings may lead to moving the infant from the initial sleep environment to a second one. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner electronic database was searched from 2018 through 2022 for infant deaths with non-homicidal manner in which scene reenactments were performed; 87 such deaths were identified. The most common causes of death were unsafe sleep environments (64.4%) and asphyxia (21.8%). Of the tot

Beyond the genome: clinical challenges in diagnosing LONP1-related mitochondrial disorders.

BACKGROUND: LONP1 encodes an ATP-dependent protease essential for maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. LONP1 variants have been associated with cerebral-ocular-dental-auricular-skeletal anomalies syndrome, pediatric cataract, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and neurodevelopmental disorders; moreover, these variants can be inherited in both autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant modes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical data and genetic test results of a Chinese boy diagnosed as having mitochondrial encephalopathy. Subsequently, we evaluated the pathogenicity

ESR Essentials: imaging in nasal obstruction and epistaxis-practice recommendations by the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology.

Nasal obstruction and epistaxis are common otorhinolaryngologic complaints with multiple etiologies ranging from benign anatomical variations and mucosal inflammation to severe neoplastic and vascular disorders. Clinical evaluation and nasal endoscopy are first-line diagnostic tools, with imaging reserved for selected indications. Imaging differentiates uncomplicated from complicated presentations, guiding management and surgical planning. Computed tomography (CT) is the primary modality for assessing sinonasal anatomical variants, bony pathology, and inflammatory or neoplastic disease. Magnet

Sudden death secondary to compression of the upper airway by esophageal distension.

Achalasia is a motor disorder of the esophagus, with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 10,000 people worldwide. Clinically, it is expressed by progressive dysphagia for solids and liquids, regurgitation of undigested food, and chest pain. In very rare cases, achalasia could become complicated by severe esophageal distension. We report the case of a 45-year-old man who experienced a sudden loss of consciousness during a meal. Endotracheal intubation was impossible due to a tracheal obstruction of unknown origin. Autopsy revealed major distension of the esophagus (maximum diameter of 18 cm), fille
