PURPOSE: Recent evidences pointed out that the prevalence of comorbidity of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is around 20%. Nonetheless its association factors have not been extensively evaluated after the recent modification in diagnostic criteria. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of RLS/WED and its association factors with OSA in an adult sample.
METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional study including 490 adult patients with OSA diagnosis (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 5 obstructive events/hour associated to clinical picture). RLS/

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and heterogeneous disorder. Most patients can be successfully treated, but some have poor treatment outcomes. This review first presented four physiological OSA characteristics, including upper airway collapsibility, loop gain, airway muscle responsiveness, and arousal threshold, which are associated with the efficacy of OSA therapy. Then, we presented how to select the most effective therapy modality for each individual based on OSA characteristics, with the purpose of providing a basis for individualized treatment of OSA.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), the predominant form of non-small-cell lung cancer, is frequently complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which increases mortality risks. Investigating the prognostic implications of ARDS-related genes in LUAD is crucial for improving clinical outcomes. Data from TCGA, GEO and GTEx were used to identify 276 ARDS-related genes in LUAD via differential expression analysis. Univariate Cox regression, consensus clustering and machine learning algorithms were used to develop a prognostic risk scoring model. Functional enrichment, immune infiltration a

OBJECTIVE: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be at increased risk for adverse events during procedural sedation, however, there remains a gap in the literature quantifying these risks. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk of peri-procedural adverse events in OSA patients undergoing procedural sedation in ambulatory settings, compared to those without OSA.
METHODS: Four databases were systematically searched for studies published from January 1, 2011 to January 4, 2024. The inclusion criteria were: adult patients with OSA undergoing procedural sedat

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) predominantly affects patients who are obese and causes systemic organ damage. Little is known about the relationship between fat distribution and bone impairment in these patients. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on the bone quality of patients with OSA. In our prospective study, 49 untreated patients with mild-to-severe OSA underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Polygraphy data were also collected. According to the recent reference values for European adults, patients were divided by the sex-related threshold of the VAT

Acute lung injury (ALI) is an acute, diffuse inflammatory lung condition triggered by factors of severe infections, trauma, shock, burns, ischemia-reperfusion, and mechanical ventilation. It is primarily characterized by refractory hypoxemia and respiratory distress. The more severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), can progress to multi-organ failure and has a high mortality rate. Despite extensive research, the exact pathogenesis of ALI and ARDS remains complex and not fully understood. Recent advancements in studying the gut microecology of patients have revealed the critica

INTRODUCTION: Acute lung injury (ALI) and its subsequent progression to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are severe respiratory conditions. They are marked by rapid lung function deterioration and extensive pulmonary inflammation, often resulting in critical patient outcomes. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) and monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) are two distinct subsets of lung macrophages present in the alveoli during ALI. Both are critical mediators of pulmonary inflammation. Our study examined the interplay between AMs and MDMs in the inflammatory environment of ALI/ARDS.

PURPOSE: The selection and intensity of respiratory support for ARDS are guided by PaO2/FiO2. However, ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is linked to respiratory mechanics and ventilator settings. We explored whether the VILI risk is related to ARDS severity based on oxygenation.
METHODS: We analysed data on 228 ARDS subjects with PaO2/FiO2 < 200 mmHg, categorized into three severity groups: one based on PaO2/FiO2 ratio, and the others based on tertiles of predictors of VILI: mechanical power ratio (MPR) and driving pressure (DP). In each group of oxygenation-based ARDS severity and MPR a

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is high. The clinical course of non-IPF interstitial lung disease (ILD) can be similar to that of IPF. We sought to assess the frequency and predictors of OSA in patients with non-IPF fibrotic ILD, as well as the impact of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy on the quality of life of such patients.
METHODS: This was a prospective study in which non-IPF fibrotic ILD patients underwent a home sleep apnea test. The patients with and without OSA were compared, and a multivariate logis

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may increase the risk of depression through various hypothesized mechanisms. Studies regarding this relationship with children are limited. This systematic review aims to assess the prevalence of depression in pediatric patients with OSA. Five electronic databases, grey literature, and reference lists of included studies were systematically searched. Studies reporting the prevalence of depression, as described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychiatric evaluation or other validated screening measures, in children with OSA diagn

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is among the most sleep-related breathing disorders, capable of causing severe neurological and cardiovascular complications if left untreated. The conventional diagnosis of OSA relies on polysomnography, which involves multiple electrodes and expert supervision. A promising alternative is single-channel Electrocardiogram (ECG) based diagnosis due to its simplicity and relevance. However, extracting respiratory-related features from ECG is challenging since ECG signals do not directly reflect respiratory patterns. Consequently, the accura

Heat stress in the dry period reduces yield and health in the next lactation. Previous work indicates that feeding OmniGen AF (OMN; Phibro Animal Health) mitigates the detrimental effects of heat stress. Electric blankets (EB) can induce heat stress in lactating cows, but EB have not been used with dry cows. The objectives of this study were to explore efficacy of the EB on cows during the dry period, as well as to examine the effect of feeding OMN to heat-stressed cows. We hypothesized that EB would increase body temperature in dry cows and OMN would ameliorate the effects of heat stress. Fif

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction and brain insulin resistance have been related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. Streptozotocin (STZ) is commonly employed to disrupt glucose and insulin metabolism, even causing cognitive impairment in animal models. We aimed at studying the protective effect of JM-20 on STZ-induced memory impairment and brain mitochondrial dysfunction.
METHODS: Male C57Bl6 mice received 3 mg/kg STZ intracerebroventricularly and JM-20 (0.25 mg/kg or 4 mg/kg) was administered daily by gastric gavage. Episodic memory was evaluated through Y-maze, novel object recogn

This study aimed to investigate the effect of eccentric exercise on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and inflammation on high-altitude-induced venous gas emboli (VGE). Subjects were exposed to an altitude of 24,000 ft. for 90 min, with either prior eccentric exercise (ECC) or no exercise (Control) 24 h before. Blood samples were collected at baseline (T0), before (T1), and after (T2) altitude exposures. VGE load was evaluated using the Eftedal-Brubakk (ΕΒ) scale. Creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin were used to assess muscle damage, while interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (
