Supine Bicycle Stress Echocardiography at Low Altitude for Identification of Susceptibility to Acute Mountain Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high altitude may unpredictably lead to acute mountain sickness (AMS). The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of AMS at low altitude using exercise stress echocardiography (ESE). METHODS: A total of 40 healthy adults were enrolled and underwent comprehensive supine bicycle ESE at low altitude, including pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), right ventricular area index at the end of diastole, B-lines, and inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter. All subjects ascended to 3,600 m within 24 hours. The risk factors for AMS were screened using least absolute shri

Exploring phenotypes to improve long-term mortality risk stratification in obstructive sleep apnea through a machine learning approach: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a heterogeneous sleep disorder for which the identification of phenotypes might help for risk stratification for long-term mortality. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify distinct phenotypes of OSA and to study the association of phenotypes features with long-term mortality by using machine learning. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with OSA who completed a 15-year follow-up and were adherent to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Multidimensional data were collected at baseline and were used to id

[Design and application of a prone and side lying double-purpose inflatable mattress for acute respiratory distress syndrome].

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a leading cause of high mortality in critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU). Prone ventilation is one of the important treatment methods for ARDS, but due to the severity of the patients' conditions, their physical weakness, and poor cooperation, it is difficult for them to adjust to the prone position on their own. This requires a large number of medical staff to adjust the patient to a prone position and implement prone ventilation for than 12 hours daily to achieve therapeutic effects. Clinical implementation often faces challenge

Regional brain iron mapping in obstructive sleep apnea adults.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects show significant white matter injury, including myelin changes in several brain areas, potentially from impaired glial cells, contributing to increased iron levels that escalate neurodegeneration, but brain iron loads are unclear. Our aim was to examine regional brain iron load, using T2∗-relaxometry, in OSA adults before and after continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment over controls. METHODS: We performed T2∗-weighted imaging using a 3.0-T MRI scanner on 35 OSA adults, who were followed after 3- and 9- mo CPAP treatment, and 67 co

Loss of Sult1a1 reduces body weight and increases browning of white adipose tissue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overweight and obesity affects millions of individuals worldwide and consequently represents a major public health concern. Individuals living with overweight and obesity have difficulty maintaining a low body weight due to known physiological mechanisms which prevent further weight loss and drive weight regain. In contrast, mechanisms which promote low body weight maintenance receive less attention and are largely unknown. To uncover these intrinsic mechanisms, we investigated a human cohort of constitutionally thin (CT) individuals which maintain a low body weight a

Gut microbiota's role in high-altitude cognitive impairment: the therapeutic potential of Clostridium sp. supplementation.

Prolonged exposure to high-altitude environments may increase the risk of cognitive decline in young migrants. Recent studies suggest that hypobaric hypoxia-induced alterations in gut microbial composition could partly contribute to this risk. However, the absence of direct evidence from cohort studies and an unclear mechanism hinder intervention development based on this hypothesis. This study recruited 109 young male migrants living in Xizang to investigate the microbial mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment associated with high-altitude migration. Multi-omic analysis revealed distinct

Prediction of severity of obstructive sleep apnea by awake impulse oscillometry.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease, which poses a significant health threat. Initial diagnostics with polygraphy or polysomnography are time consuming and expensive. Therefore, there is an unmet medical need for simplification, especially to exclude healthy patients from elaborate and unnecessary diagnostics. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a simple, cheap and noninvasive tool to asses upper airway resistance, which is increased in patients with OSA. The objective was to examine the relationship between IOS parameters and polysomnography in order to evaluate
