Omnidirectional Wireless Power Transfer for Millimetric Magnetoelectric Biomedical Implants.

Miniature bioelectronic implants promise revolutionary therapies for cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a significant method for miniaturization, eliminating the need for bulky batteries in today's devices. Despite successful demonstrations of millimetric battery-free implants in animal models, the robustness and efficiency of WPT are known to degrade significantly under misalignment incurred by body movements, respiration, heart beating, and limited control of implant orientation during surgery. This paper presents an omnidirectional WPT platform for m

Troponins and Skeletal Muscle Pathologies.

Skeletal muscles account for ~30-40% of the total weight of human body and are responsible for its most important functions, including movement, respiration, thermogenesis, and glucose and protein metabolism. Skeletal muscle damage negatively impacts the whole-body functioning, leading to deterioration of the quality of life and, in severe cases, death. Therefore, timely diagnosis and therapy for skeletal muscle dysfunction are important goals of modern medicine. In this review, we focused on the skeletal troponins that are proteins in the thin filaments of muscle fibers. Skeletal troponins pl

Multimodal Treatment of Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition linked with multiple comorbidities. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, though the gold standard for OSA treatment, often do not address the entirety of the disorder. Various treatment strategies exist to address OSA beyond CPAP, each targeting different OSA aspects. These include managing comorbid sleep disorders, anatomic considerations, endotype-directed therapy, and lifestyle interventions. These comprehensive approaches aim to improve the benefits of treatment, and reduce the complications associated with OSA.

Developing a Personalized Approach to Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

All areas of medicine are focused on developing a personalized approach to diagnosis and treatment of specific conditions. This is based on the fundamental concept that all subjects with apparently the same disorder are different. There are multiple reasons for these differences. These include differences in the sequence of DNA, differences in the environment, differences in epigenetics, some of which may be driven by environmental differences and differences in the microbiome. These different factors will result in variations in multiple aspects of the phenotype. This includes different pathw

Future of Sleep Medicine: Novel Approaches and Measures Derived from Physiologic Systems Dynamics (Part I).

We review recent progress in understanding fundamental aspects of physiologic regulation during wake and sleep based on modern data-driven, analytical, and computational approaches with a focus on the complex dynamics of individual physiologic systems. The presented empirical findings indicate that sleep-wake and circadian cycles do not simply modulate basic physiologic functions but influence physiologic systems dynamics simultaneously over a broad range of time scales. The reviewed empirical approaches and derived measures represent novel mechanistic aspects of sleep and wake regulation, and

Intermittent Hypoxia as a Model of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Present and Future.

Intermittent hypoxia (IH) is an extremely frequent condition characterized by recurrent episodes of reduced oxygen levels interspersed with periods of normoxia, often seen in conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and lung diseases. Among OSA patients, IH occurs due to periodic airway obstructions during sleep, leading to transient drops in blood oxygen saturation followed by reoxygenation. Future directions involve standardizing IH protocols, incorporating patient variability into the IH profiles being administered, and utilizing strategically developed animal models to enhance the rel

A Rare Case of Tetanus With Early Manifestation of Apnea But Without Trismus.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a life-threatening disease caused by tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT) produced by Clostridium tetani. Early symptoms of tetanus are trismus and muscle stiffness, both caused by spasticity. TeNT mainly exerts its effect by impairment of inhibitory neurons in the spine and brainstem, resulting in the hyperactivity of motor neurons, which causes spasticity and muscle spasms. Apnea is not a symptom that is predicted to occur in the early stages. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of severe tetanus with an early manifestation of apnea but without trismus. We believe that apnea was

[Research Progress in the Role of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 in Altitude Sickness and the Mechanisms Involved].

Individuals who reside at high altitudes for extended periods or those who visit these regions briefly frequently experience high-altitude response, which triggers a series of physiological and pathological changes in the body, ultimately causing altitude sickness. One of the most critical features of high-altitude environments is hypoxia. Recent studies have demonstrated that hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) plays a central role in mediating the body's response to hypoxic conditions at high altitudes. HIF-1, a heterodimeric transcription factor composed of an oxygen-sensitive subunit α (HIF

[Current Status and Prospects of Research on Altitude-Related Hypertension].

The high-altitude environment, an extreme kind of geographical environment characterized by low atmospheric pressure and oxygen levels, coupled with low temperatures, may significantly impact on the cardiovascular system and blood pressure regulation. Hypertension, a primary cardiovascular risk factor threatening human health, is influenced by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. A growing body of evidence suggests the prevalence of hypertension is higher in populations living in high-altitude regions than that in populations living at low altitudes. However, the awareness, treatmen

[Body Function Changes and Prevention Strategies in High-Altitude Environment].

In high-altitude regions, the unique challenges posed by the low-oxygen environment exert significant stress on the physiological functions of the human body. Currently, there is an urgent need to develop a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment strategies, as well as effective interventions, of altitude sickness. In this paper, we explored the self-regulatory mechanisms of the human body in such extreme environments, elaborating on the adaptive mechanisms at the molecular level and the process of acclimatization to high altitudes. Furthermore, we summarized the his
