BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has circulated in the United States since 1999. In 2025, Florida was home to 24 million people, with projected increases in population and urbanization in a changing climate. The southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, is found in every county, and is a major vector for WNV. Describing shifting WNV transmission risk is important to inform public health and vector control planning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using published estimates of thermal suitability of WNV transmission by Cx. quinquefasciatus, with climate models and p

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) causes encephalitis in humans and equids, and there are no vaccines or therapeutics for humans. In recent years, non-coding RNAs have emerged as critical regulatory factors affecting different cellular pathways. Specifically, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified as regulators of antiviral pathways; however, their role in VEEV infection has not been assessed. Here, we show differential expression of several lncRNAs in primary mouse target cells infected with a vaccine strain of VEEV (TC-83) but not a pathogenic strain (TrD). Among the d

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a mosquito-borne RNA virus that causes low mortality but high morbidity in humans. In addition to natural outbreaks, there is potential for exposure to VEEV via aerosolized virus particles. Currently there are no FDA-licensed vaccines or antiviral therapies for VEEV. We previously demonstrated that high titer anti-VEEV human antibody preparations derived from the plasma of hyperimmunized transchromosomic (Tc) bovines provided significant protection to mice from subcutaneous and aerosol challenge with virulent VEEV (Gardner et al., J. Virol., 91:e0

West Nile virus (WNV) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family that continues to pose a significant public health threat. It is maintained in nature through a transmission cycle between wild birds, the main hosts, and vector mosquitoes, primarily Culex spp. In Italy, WNV infections have been reported since 2008, with seasonal outbreaks occurring almost annually. This surveillance-based descriptive epidemiological analysis summarizes data on confirmed human infections between 2018 and 2023, analysing annual incidence rates, 95% confidence intervals, temporal trends,

West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are neurotropic orthoflaviviruses of the Flaviviridae family, transmitted primarily by Culex mosquitoes and maintained in enzootic cycles involving birds. While WNV is a well-established human pathogen causing hundreds of neuroinvasive cases annually in Europe, USUV has emerged more recently, with fewer documented human infections but increasing evidence of neurovirulence. The viral nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) plays a central role in orthoflavivirus pathogenesis by modulating host immune responses, disrupting endothelial barrier integrity, and fac

Infections caused by arboviruses, a diverse group of viral pathogens transmitted by biting arthropod vectors, mainly mosquitoes, ticks, and midges, can cause a range of illnesses in humans, from mild, influenza-like symptoms to severe neurological complications including encephalitis and viral hemorrhagic fever. According to 2024 World Health Organization statistics, vector-borne diseases collectively account for over 700,000 human deaths annually, with mosquito-borne infections such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever constituting a growing and significant proportion of this burden

BACKGROUNDWhile West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne zoonotic pathogen, is detected every year in animals in Spain, clinical human cases occur more sporadically. Most explanatory and predictive models for WNV circulation focus on single components and aggregate multiple year data into a single dataset.AIMWe sought WNV circulation environmental drivers across different ecological components (vectors, reservoirs, and dead-end hosts), by analysing their spatial and temporal dynamics.METHODSWe used active and passive surveillance data collected in Spain between 2003 and 2022, encompassing mosqu

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an alphavirus vectored by mosquitos. It can cause disease in equines and humans characterised by a febrile illness that may progress into encephalitis. Replication of VEEV in the central nervous system induces activation of glial cells and neurons, compromising the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and inducing a state of neuroinflammation. This inflammation can lead to symptoms such as confusion, seizures, and coma, and sustained inflammation contributes to neurodegeneration. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a biomarker that has previously been associated wit

West Nile fever is a zoonotic viral disease transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, capable of causing severe neurological illness in humans, equines, and birds. Over the past dozen years, Europe has experienced numerous WNF outbreaks of varying severity, leading to significant public health and economic impacts. Consequently, WNF has emerged as a major concern for both public health and veterinary sectors. In this study, we employed spatiotemporal analysis techniques alongside an optimized ecological niche model to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of historical WNF outbreaks, pre

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family. WNV infection may lead to meningitis and encephalitis. The type I interferon (IFN) response is the first line of host defense against viral infections. Viruses are reported to have evolved multiple strategies to suppress the type I IFN response to enhance viral replication and immune evasion. The tripartite motif-containing proteins (TRIMs) are reported to regulate antiviral immune responses during viral infections. However, the involvement of TRIM proteins and their underlying mech

A man in his 50s with poorly controlled diabetes and chronic kidney disease presented with rapidly progressive bilateral facial diplegia 1 week after hospitalisation for pneumonia. Examination demonstrated symmetric lower motor neuron facial weakness without limb involvement; reflexes were 1+ throughout. Brain and internal auditory canal MRI were unremarkable. Cerebrospinal fluid showed albuminocytologic dissociation (protein 151 mg/dL, WBC 3 /mm³). Serum antiganglioside antibody testing was positive for GM2 IgG at 72 IV. CSF infectious studies were positive for West Nile virus IgM (3.07) and

Weather conditions, especially temperature, rainfall, and humidity, affect the transmission and spread of West Nile virus (WNV). This study investigated the effects of weather patterns on WNV activity in Croatia using climatological, equine seroprevalence, and human case data collected in two endemic continental Croatian regions with high WNV activity from 2015 to 2024. Overall equine WNV IgG prevalence was significantly higher in East Croatia (30.34%) than in Central Croatia (10.90%) and increased over time in both regions with a similar temporal pattern, indicating a shared upward trend in v

BACKGROUNDWest Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic mosquito-borne pathogen increasingly reported in Europe.AIMWe aimed to characterise heterogeneities in the average annual human risk of WNV infection (force of infection, FOI) and in WNV surveillance across Europe.METHODSWe conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines to identify serological studies on WNV in humans with IgG-based assays in Europe. We then used mathematical models fitted to both age-stratified serosurvey and case data to reconstruct spatially explicit FOI estimates, the sensitivity of syndromic surveillance and age

Zoos may serve as sentinel sites for zoonotic vector-borne diseases. West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are closely related orthoflaviviruses transmitted between Culex mosquitoes and a bird reservoir. Both viruses can also infect mammals, including humans, where they may cause symptoms and, more rarely, hospitalization and death. However, serological cross-reactivity between WNV and USUV complicates their differential diagnosis. Here, we aimed to reconstruct the dynamics of emergence of WNV in a zoo located in a newly affected area in Europe, using ELISA and Virus Neutralization Test

Climate change can intensify mosquito-borne disease risks through rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events. To mitigate effects of climate change, cities are adopting nature-based solutions, such as urban greening and rainwater management, yet their implications for vector-borne diseases and host community composition remain poorly understood. West Nile virus (WNV), an emerging mosquito-borne human pathogen in Europe, is primarily transmitted between birds and mosquitoes. Using mosquito sampling at five sites within a one-square-kilometre area in Berlin, Germany, we examine

Río Negro virus (RNV), an enzootic member of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) complex, has historically been regarded as avirulent based on studies in adult immunocompetent animals. However, its pathogenic potential under biologically relevant conditions has not been systematically examined. Here, we investigated RNV infection in infant C57BL/6 mice as a permissive developmental model. Infection resulted in a transient viremic phase followed by systemic dissemination, disruption of splenic immune architecture, and pronounced neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative alterations in

The functional consequences of symptomatic West Nile virus (WNV) infection in hospitalized older adults remain poorly characterized. We aimed to describe the clinical presentation, acute confusional states, and six-month functional recovery trajectories of older adults hospitalized with symptomatic WNV infection. We conducted a retrospective case series of consecutive patients aged ≥65 years with laboratory-confirmed WNV infection admitted to a secondary-care hospital in Sardinia, Italy. Functional status was assessed using the Barthel Index at admission, discharge, and six-month follow-up. Se

BACKGROUNDWest Nile virus (WNV) is an orthoflavivirus maintained in an enzootic cycle between birds and ornithophilic Culex mosquitoes. Human infections are usually asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic, while severe neurological disease occurs mainly in children, elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Despite evidence of WNV circulation in France since the 1960s, nationwide seroprevalence data are unavailable.AIMWe wanted to determine the seroprevalence of WNV among blood donors in mainland France to characterise the epidemiology of WNV and assess risk factors and potential implications for tr

In recent years, many countries have experienced increased outbreaks of vector-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus (WNV). WNV is primarily transmitted to humans by the bite of infected Culex mosquitoes and has an enzoonotic transmission cycle involving birds. In Algeria, serological evidence of WNV in humans dates back to the 1970s, but circulation patterns are poorly characterized. To address this, we conduct a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey of WNV in humans and fit serocatalytic models to the data. We also analyze data on severe WNV cases. In this study, we report a seroprevalence
