Prevalence and patterns of congenital tooth agenesis in children: a mixed-method study on parental awareness.

BACKGROUND: Congenital tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental dental anomalies in children and may lead to functional, esthetic, and psychosocial consequences if not diagnosed and managed early. While its prevalence has been widely investigated, data regarding parental awareness and communication following diagnosis remain limited. METHODS: This mixed-method study included a retrospective radiographic evaluation and a prospective telephone survey. Panoramic radiographs of 3,550 children aged 7-15 years who attended a university pediatric dentistry clinic between 2020 and 2025

Supernumerary Tusks in African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta africana): A Case Series and Consideration of Developmental Mechanisms.

Supernumerary teeth are well recognised in humans and domestic animals but are rarely reported in elephants. This case series describes four African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) with multiple tusk structures occupying a single alveolus. A 7-year-old bull presented with a deformed left tusk and behavioural changes. Clinical examination revealed two coronal openings, followed by eruption of three accessory tusks. Conservative intracavitary treatment and selective surgical removal of the accessory tusks preserved the primary tusk, which maintained normal eruption and function at 36-mont

External Root Resorption: Unique Cone Beam Computed Tomography Findings of a Rare Radiographic Entity.

External root resorption occurs as a physiological or pathological process following pulpal necrosis. It ensues due to a traumatic insult to the pulp from underlying mechanical and chemical stimuli. The mechanical stimuli that favour external resorption include excessive orthodontic forces generated during orthodontic tooth movement, abnormal occlusal forces of mastication caused by traumatic occlusion, pressure effects caused by underlying impacted teeth, and odontogenic cysts and tumours. External resorption can also result from chemical stimuli such as bleaching, extruded filling materials,

A Case Report on Multiple Impacted Teeth: A Three-Dimensional Radiological Evaluation by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Multiple impacted teeth refer to a clinical condition where more than one tooth fails to erupt beyond its chronological age of eruption and remains partially or fully submerged in the jawbone. Multiple impacted teeth commonly arise from conditions such as cleft palate and cleft lip, genetically linked syndromes, and pathological conditions like mucopolysaccharidosis. Impacted teeth, or wisdom teeth, commonly occur in the maxillary or mandibular third molars. Still, other teeth, such as maxillary canine and mandibular premolars, can also be affected. Our case discusses an incidental finding of

[Anomalous eruption of a mandibular canine].

Impaction of a mandibular canine is rare, and its treatment can be challenging. Unlike with the treatment of an impacted maxillary canine, there are no guidelines for treating an impacted mandibular canine. Treatment options for an impacted mandibular canine include autotransplantation, surgical extraction, monitoring, or exposure and orthodontic treatment. The proposed decision-making model can assist in selecting the optimal treatment.

Syndromic Autism in Helsmoortel-Van der Aa Syndrome: From Clinical Suspicion to Genetic Diagnosis.

Syndromic autism refers to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) occurring as part of an identifiable genetic syndrome. Helsmoortel-Van der Aa syndrome (HVDAS/ADNP syndrome) is a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in the ADNP gene. We report a 10-year-old boy with ASD and intellectual disability who exhibited delayed motor and language development, characteristic facial dysmorphism, early tooth eruption, endocrine abnormalities, electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities, and urogenital findings. Following unremarkable karyotyping and chromo

[Online reader survey on autotransplantation: the findings].

A recent NTVT reader survey (n = 33) shows widespread recognition of the importance of early orthodontic referral in cases of eruption disorders (87.9%), even if not all deciduous teeth have yet been replaced (87.9%). Of the respondents, 36.4% indicate that they lack sufficient knowledge to determine the indications for autotransplantation. Autotransplantation in cases of eruption disorders is, in principle, part of a broader orthodontic treatment plan. Multidisciplinary collaboration is therefore emphasized by most respondents (90.9%). Many respondents consider autotransplantation for anterio

Guided Eruption of Bilateral Palatally Impacted Maxillary Canines Using a Ballista Spring: A Case Report.

Palatally impacted maxillary canines are a relatively frequent developmental defect that can cause functional, aesthetic, and periodontal issues in cases of inaction. To reposition the impacted teeth into the dental arch and avoid complications related to them, early detection and proper orthodontic treatment are necessary. This case report presents the orthodontic management of a patient with bilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines. After detailed clinical and radiographic assessment, it was decided to apply the treatment plan that included surgical exposure of the impacted canines and

Dose-effect analysis of late dental adverse effects following radiation therapy in survivors of paediatric head and neck rhabdomyosarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric head and neck rhabdomyosarcomas (HNRMS) often require radiotherapy, causing dental complications during critical development. Limited literature suggests dose-dependent risks, but clear thresholds for late dental adverse effects are lacking. This study aims to characterize dose effects on developing dentition in paediatric HNRMS patients to identify dose-response relationships informing evidence-based treatment planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthopantomograms from survivors of HNRMS were evaluated using the validated DENTALE scoring system. Radiation doses from brac

Mesiodens: Clinical Variability, CBCT Evaluation, and Surgical Management, A Three-Case Series.

Mesiodens are the most common supernumerary teeth, typically located in the premaxillary region. They may remain asymptomatic or cause complications such as delayed eruption or displacement of permanent incisors. This case series describes three pediatric male patients with mesiodens. One with single and two cases with double mesiodens. Clinical and radiographic evaluations, including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), were performed for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Findings included delayed eruption, midline diastema, and functional discomfort. All supernumerary teeth were su

A Case of CHARGE Syndrome With Tooth Eruption Disturbance Caused by Severe Calculus Accumulation.

Individuals with disabilities who are unable to maintain oral intake are at high risk of inadequate oral hygiene because of reduced masticatory stimulation and impaired self-cleansing, leading to excessive dental calculus accumulation. However, the effects of this on tooth eruption are poorly understood. Herein, we report the case of an 18-year-old boy with CHARGE syndrome managed with gastrostomy feeding since childhood. Following prolonged inadequate oral care, severe dental calculus accumulated throughout the dentition. Thick calculi encased the mandibular right first and second deciduous m

Bilateral Maxillary Fourth and Fifth Molars in a 17-Year-Old Female.

Supernumerary teeth are relatively common in clinical practice; however, the occurrence of multiple supernumerary teeth in a bilaterally symmetrical pattern is rare. A 17-year-old female was referred to our department for extraction of impacted third molars. Panoramic radiography revealed two bilaterally symmetrical tooth-like structures adjacent to each maxillary third molar. Computed tomography confirmed that these were independent structures, leading to a diagnosis of bilateral maxillary fourth and fifth molars. In July 2023, the bilateral maxillary and mandibular third molars, together wit

Molecular insights into the role of Wnt signaling in supernumerary maxillary incisor formation.

BACKGROUND: Sclerostin domain-containing 1 (SOSTDC1) deficiency enhances BMP and Wnt signaling, causing supernumerary teeth formation. Competing hypotheses of this formation at different sites have been proposed, and the underlying molecular mechanisms and cell types remain poorly understood. RESULTS: We examined Sostdc1 knockout effects on spatiotemporal expression of Wnt pathway genes in developing maxillary incisors. In wild type mice, we observed an inverse spatiotemporal expression of Sostdc1 and Wnt10a. The knockout caused ectopic expression of Wnt10a, Wnt6, Lrp4, Dkk1, and Sost and pro

RUNX2 promotes osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption via the newly identified LncRNA-ROD: implications for alveolar remodeling.

Delayed tooth eruption is a hallmark of cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) caused by RUNX2 haploinsufficiency, yet the underlying molecular mechanism remains undefined. Here, we show that RUNX2 regulates osteoclast-mediated alveolar bone remodeling, a process closely associated with tooth eruption. Runx2+/- mice exhibit impaired osteoclast differentiation and reduced alveolar bone resorption, resulting in delayed mandibular molar eruption-a phenotype that recapitulates human CCD. Mechanistically, RUNX2 transcriptionally activates LncRNA-ROD (Regulator of Osteoclast Differentiation), which promotes

Temporal dynamics of N2O emissions from pasture urine patches: drivers and source processes.

Nitrous oxide fluxes from urine patches (F(N2O)urine) of grazing livestock are variable over time due to fluctuations in driving parameters, such as soil temperature, water-filled pore space (WFPS), and availability of the source substrates ammonium and nitrate. Therefore, the frequency and timing of flux measurements after urine application are important when determining cumulative F(N2O)urine. In this study, F(N2O)urine was measured in eight experiments at high temporal frequency using an automatic chamber system in a pasture located in Switzerland. A driver analysis using random forest iden
