Diagnostic Pitfalls of Dental Follicles and Cyst-like Lesions in Juvenile Patients: An Early Odontogenic Myxoma Mimicking a Follicular Cyst.

The occurrence of cysts and tumors in pediatric patients varies across different age groups. Follicular and dentigerous cysts are among the most common lesions. However, typical odontogenic tumors in juvenile patients are not frequently observed. Early stages of cyst and odontogenic tumor development might exhibit some similar characteristics due to the presence of unerupted teeth or their relationship with various stages of tooth formation and eruption. Many small lesions are discovered accidentally on routine orthopantomography (OPG), while the bigger ones manifest themselves as bone swellin

Congenital Eruption Cyst: A Case Report Listing Histopathological Features With Literature Review and Differential Diagnoses.

Congenital eruption cysts manifest in neonates when the dental follicle separates from the crown of an erupting tooth coronal to the alveolar ridge. Clinical diagnosis can be challenging as it can present clinically similar to congenital epulis and other benign newborn pathologies. They can occasionally cause difficulty with feeding and latching, which can inhibit the newborn's early development. Here we present a 26-hour-old twin male infant who was evaluated for a dome-shaped nodule on the mandibular alveolar ridge. Surgical excision was performed due to difficulty in latching and feeding, a

Influence of Asymmetrical Eruption and Impaction Angulation of the Wisdom Teeth on the Craniofacial Morphology.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital absence of the wisdom teeth is correlated with the jaw morphology; however, no study has investigated the correlation between the direction of eruption or impaction of the wisdom teeth and jaw morphology. This study aimed to investigate whether differences in the direction of eruption or impaction between the bilateral wisdom teeth affect the jaw morphology. METHODS: The study included patients with bilateral wisdom teeth who underwent computed tomography imaging prior to wisdom-tooth extraction. The direction of eruption or impaction of the wisdom teeth was evaluated,

Effects of intergenerational parent-child separation on early eruption of permanent molar and telomere length: a cross-sectional study among Chinese children aged 3-6 years.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child separation is a risk factor for children’s physical and mental problems, limited literature has explored the impact on children’s development across generations. Here, we examine the effects of intergenerational parent-child separation on accelerating biological aging in preschool children, as indicated by the accelerated eruption of the first permanent molar (M1) and oral epithelial cell telomere length (TL). METHODS: This study draws on data from a child growth cohort established in rural areas of Anhui Province, China, which included 2,367 children aged 3–6 years. R

Atraumatic Maxillary Canine Root Repositioning as an Alternative to Orthodontic Forced Eruption: A Case Report.

Preservation of natural teeth in the anterior region is often preferred over replacement with dental implants due to functional and esthetic considerations. Although orthodontic extrusion preserves soft tissue architecture, it may not be suitable in all cases. Atraumatic extrusion using minimally invasive extraction systems allows controlled coronal repositioning of teeth while preserving periodontal structures. This case report presents the clinical application of atraumatic root repositioning of a maxillary canine as an alternative to orthodontic forced eruption. The findings suggest that th

Diagnostic Capabilities of Large Language Models in Paediatric Dentistry.

Although many studies have examined large language models (LLMs) for dental diagnosis, most focus on a single topic, and few have investigated their broader usefulness for the variety of patients. Twenty-five cases meeting the eligibility criteria were extracted from paediatric dentistry questions in the National Examination. Age, sex, and chief complaint were collected and presented to Copilot and Gemini along with intraoral photographs and radiographic examinations, instructing them to identify abnormal areas and provide a diagnosis. Both LLMs showed >70% accuracy in identifying pathological

Advanced Strategies in the Repair of Alveolar Cleft Defects: Biological Approaches, Biomaterials, and Future Perspectives.

The repair of alveolar cleft defects remains a formidable challenge in craniofacial surgery, with implications for dental arch continuity, tooth eruption, speech, and facial aesthetics. Traditional bone grafting methods (especially iliac crest autografts) have remained the gold standard, yet donor-site morbidity, graft resorption, and limitations in large defects drive the search for more advanced strategies. In recent years, developments in biomaterials, stem cell-based tissue engineering, and computer-aided surgery have opened new conceptual and practical pathways for alveolar cleft repair.

Ectopic eruption of a permanent mandibular tooth in a miniature horse: case report.

Developmental and eruption abnormalities are common and can result in progressive dental diseases. Ectopic eruption of the affected tooth may be the result of these processes. This study aims to report the occurrence of a permanent mandibular tooth in a horizontal position, with retention of the corresponding deciduous tooth, in a miniature horse. A 2-year-old female miniature horse was admitted to the veterinary hospital with a hard swelling on the left mandibular ramus, which had been growing continuously for three months. After a complete evaluation, it was concluded that the swelling was t

Maternal influences on oral microbiome development and implications for early childhood health: a systematic review.

A deeper understanding of how maternal-infant interactions shape the establishment and diversification of the oral microbiome could have significant clinical applications; however, relatively few studies emphasize early maternal-infant microbial connections. This systematic review provides a longitudinal analysis of oral microbiome development from birth to five years, focusing on the relationship between maternal and infant microbiomes. We conducted a systematic search (June 2025) using keywords "mother," "children," "oral microbiome," and "longitudinal" across PubMed, Cochrane Library, and E

Comparative morphogenesis of mouse and rat mandibular first molars (M1): a review of developmental timing, structure, and signaling pathways.

Rodents have been studied widely to evaluate the cellular and molecular mechanism of tooth development, although significant differences exist between them that impact how the researchers design their experiment. The mandibular first molar M1 is the most studied tooth in both species and provides a model for crown morphogenesis, root initiation, periodontal ligament organization, and the tooth eruption. In mice the M1 development is rapid, the crown complete at birth and the tooth eruption postnatal P20-21, while in rats the tooth development events are delayed, with larger tooth germs and too

Generation and characterization of a murine amelogenesis imperfecta model.

OBJECTIVE: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) refers to a group of rare yet complex genetic disorders that affect the quantity and/or quality of tooth enamel. Recently, in AI patients, we identified mutations that disrupt a conserved alternative splicing pattern of the AMELX gene, which encodes amelogenin, the most abundant enamel matrix protein. These mutations led to the retention of exon 4, which is normally skipped during the pre-mRNA splicing process, resulting in the characteristic pitted, hypoplastic, and hypomineralized enamel defects. To observe the impact of retention of exon 4 within AMEL

A new perspective on the etiology of impacted maxillary canines: timing factors not to be ignored-a review.

Impacted maxillary canine (IMC) is a common clinical problem in Dentistry and can lead to various complications. However, the etiology is complex, and no definitive conclusions have been reached to date. Traditional etiological theories cannot fully explain the mechanisms underlying IMC and often show considerable disagreement. Inspired by the clinical effectiveness of early intervention and considering the characteristics of tooth eruption and development, this study proposes a new perspective on the etiology of IMC. The concept of timing factors is proposed, and the notion of a chronological

Clinical Assessment of a Newer Resin-based Bioactive Restorative Cement on Class II Cavities of Primary Molars: A Comparative Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary molars play a significant role in mastication, jaw alignment, and guiding permanent tooth eruption. However, their proximal surfaces are prone to decay due to anatomical challenges and cleansing difficulties, making restorative intervention challenges. While traditional materials such as dental amalgam, composite resin (CR), and glass ionomer cement (GIC) are commonly used, advancements in dental technology have introduced bioactive materials as promising alternatives, warranting further research to ensure optimal outcomes. AIM: The present study aimed to evaluate and co
