Oligodontia is the agenesis of numerous teeth, and is commonly associated with specific syndromes and/or severe systemic abnormalities. In this paper a patient with 14 missing permanent teeth is presented clinically with her conservative and prosthetic treatments.

This article describes the treatment of a boy with Class II deep bite and hypoplasia of the alveolar process due to agenesis of the canines and premolars. At first, the occlusion has been adjusted by advancement of the mandible and opening of the bite after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Congenital aplasia (agenesis) is an important development dental anomaly. There is a big discrepancy between the data on the prevalence of aplasia in dental literature. The authors analyzed orthopantomograms of 1875 children and adolescents at the Department of Dentistry for Children and Orthodontics of Semmelweis University. The prevalence of congenital aplasia was found 15.68% (294 subjects). There was no difference between the sexes. INTRODUCTION: Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) involve abnormal development of hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To investigate the frequency of extraoral ectodermal symptoms in persons with oligodontia (>6 congenitally missing teeth). (2) To examine whole salivary flow rates in oligodontia patients, with special emphasis on persons with EDs. SURVEY GROUP AND METHODS: Sixty-eight persons with oligodontia and 39 healthy control persons were included. All participants underwent an interview, general and oral examinations, and whole salivary secretory tests.

Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (ED1) is characterized by hypotrichosis, reduced number of sweat glands, and incisior anodontia in human, mouse, and cattle. In affected humans and mice, mutations in the ED1 gene coding for ectodysplasin 1 are found. A report of a four and half-year old African patient with Van der Woude syndrome and mental retardation is reported. In addition to cleft lip/palate, hypodontia and lower lip pits; features consistent with Van der Woude syndrome, he manifested features consistent with growth and mental retardation. Prevalence of teeth loss was studied in a study of 784 lonely people living in homes for the elderly in Chuvashia. Teeth loss was rather frequent in the examinees. Epidemiological and clinical problems of teeth loss are analysed. A special program should be worked out on dental care for the elderly in special homes.

Retained primary molars without permanent successors often undergo progressive infra-occlusion, without predictable exfoliation. Early prophylactic removal, after assessment of root resorption and adjacent periodontal support loss as well as age of onset, is often indicated. This article describes the joint orthodontic-restorative care of such a case and describes an alternative method of restoration using a fibre-reinforced ceromeric bridge. As well as a conservative preparation and good aesthetics, an overlay restoration provided a fully functional occlusion.

Development of dentition is controlled by numerous genes, as has been shown by experimental animal studies and mutations that have been identified by genetic studies in man. Oligodontia, which may be defined as the congenital absence of six or more teeth apart from third molars, affects less than 0.5% of the population and may occur in isolation or as part of a syndrome. We present the case of a 9 months old boy with an X-linked form of anhidrotic (hypohidrotic) ectodermal dysplasia. Several chest X-rays had been performed to rule out pneumonia because of recurrent episodes of high fever. The child's lack of tooth buds (hypodontia), which could be encountered on the margins of the chest X-rays, are suggestive for ectodermal dysplasia.

A total of 1007 files were studied with regard to the prevalence of congenitally missing teeth. All patients were radiographed. 4.56% were found to have at least one congenitally missing tooth. The lower second premolar was the most commonly missing tooth in this study (41.66%), followed by the upper lateral incisor (22.2%). The prevalence and the distribution of dental agenesis between male and female was similar.

The most frequent extraction regime consists of the removal of upper and lower premolars. Depending on anchorage requirements, camouflage treatment options, surgical intervention, or the absence of teeth in only one arch, it may become necessary to finalize the occlusion with a one-dental-unit discrepancy between the upper and lower dental arches.
