Identification of a novel frameshift mutation (383insT) in the RUNX2 (PEBP2 alpha/CBFA1/AML3) gene in a Japanese patient with cleidocranial dysplasia.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant disorder due to mutations in runt-related gene 2 (RUNX2)/polyomavirus enhancer-binding protein 2alphaA (PEBP2alphaA)/core-binding factor A1 (CBFA1)/acute myeloid leukemia 3 (AML3). To investigate the RUNX2 mutations in a Japanese patient with classic CCD, we analyzed the RUNX2 gene using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-single-strand conformation polymorphism and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The patient had hypoplasia of the clavicles, patent fontanelles, short stature, supernumerary teeth, and retention of deciduous dentit

Prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome by means of panoramic radiographs. The sample consisted of panoramic radiographs from 70 subjects. We examined the radiographs to detect hypodontia as well as supernumerary teeth. Our results confirm the high prevalence of hypodontia among patients with Down syndrome (60%), mostly with mild expression. The teeth most often missing were the upper lateral incisors, usually bilaterally, followed by the lower second premolars and upper second premolars. Supernumer

Histological and analytical studies of a tooth in a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis.

A histopathological and analytical study of a permanent tooth from a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis (CCD) was performed. The patient was a 47-year-old woman, who had 10 erupted permanent teeth and 2 partially erupted and 19 completely impacted teeth, including supernumerary teeth. The erupted right upper premolar was extracted and observed using a light microscope and an electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA). Findings showed enamel hypoplasia, predominantly irregular globular dentin and Tomes' granular layer, and a complete lack of cellular cementum in the ground section. The increm

The management of supernumerary teeth in childhood--a retrospective study of practice in Bristol Dental Hospital, England and Westmead Dental Hospital, Sydney, Australia.

This study compared the treatment provided for patients with supernumerary teeth in Bristol Dental Hospital with those in Westmead Dental Hospital, Sydney, Australia. The records of 63 children referred for removal of a supernumerary tooth in Bristol and 96 children in Westmead were examined, involving a total of 215 supernumerary teeth. Differences in the treatment provided for these patients were found not only between the two centres but also within one centre. There appeared to be no standardised route by which these patients were seen and therefore no standardised pattern of treatment. Co

Midline space closure in the mixed dentition: a case report.

Supernumerary teeth which occur both in the primary and the permanent dentition are seen more frequently in the permanent dentition causing a variety of pathological disturbances. Presented herewith is a case report of a patient with a mesiodens which had caused flaring of the maxillary central incisors and impeded normal eruption of the maxillary lateral incisors. Extraction of the mesiodens was carried out; subsequently followed by the space closure utilizing simple fixed orthodontic therapy.

Dracula's teeth syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with facial pain, ipsilateral facial dystonia, and phantom supernumerary teeth, beginning after resection of hypertrophic gums. She had familial sensorineural deafness. BACKGROUND: Atypical cranial dystonia subsequent to dental procedures is associated with facial pain, dysesthesias, or phantom phenomena, but not with phantom supernumerary teeth. Patients with migraine are susceptible to experience cephalic phantom phenomena after dental procedures. Wynne syndrome is a hereditary autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital sensorineural deafness an

[Caries, gingivitis and dental abnormalities in patients with cleft lip and palate].

Oral health was studied in 31 children aged 10-12 years with cleft lip and palate and compared to 31 noncleft controls matched for sex and age. We found a difference in the prevalence and activity of caries with increase in cleft lip and palate patients. The unilateral crossbite and the congenitally missing teeth were more common in cleft palate children and the supernumerary teeth were fewer. Almost all children used fluoride tablets.

Supernumerary premolars. Report of 10 cases.

Supernumerary premolars are "extra" teeth morphologically belonging to the premolar group. Hyperdontia affecting premolars can be single (when only one supernumerary tooth is found), multiple (if several teeth are involved) or related to a syndrome such as cleidocranial dysplasia. Supernumerary premolars are the third most frequent group of supernumerary teeth, following mesiodens and fourth molars; the prevalence among the general population ranges from 0.09-0.64%. The present study describes 10 cases of supernumerary premolars treated in our Service of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the D

Supernumerary teeth: literature review.

A review of the literature on supernumerary teeth in general and supernumerary molars in particular was carried out on prevalence, aetiology, complications and the treatment of supernumerary teeth. Additional teeth are relatively common and are usually of simple conical shape (supernumerary teeth) but may resemble teeth of the normal size and shape. The aim of this review is to provide reference material for dental practitioners in Zimbabwe.

A newly recognized syndrome of skeletal dysplasia with opalescent and rootless teeth.

A Thai girl with skeletal dysplasia and dental anomalies was seen. Her anomalies consisted of disproportionately short stature, short neck, broad and depressed nasal bridge, broad chest in the anteroposterior dimension, kyphosis, widely spaced nipples, and protruded abdomen. Radiographic testing indicated that she had a large sella turcica, platyspondyly, hypoplastic acetabulum, and a small body of mandible. Both her deciduous and permanent teeth were equally opalescent, and most were rootless, with root development of the mandibular teeth more severely affected. Some maxillary roots were extr

Gingival enlargement associated with a partially erupted mandibular molar.

Odontogenic lesions may present as enlarged opercula and result in the delayed eruption of teeth. This case report describes the clinical and microscopic features of a peripheral odontogenic fibroma in a 13-year-old boy that involved the overlying gingiva of a partially erupted, mandibular second molar. A differential diagnosis and treatment for lesions presenting as gingival enlargements in the molar region are discussed.

The value of a baseline caries risk assessment model in the primary dentition for the prediction of caries incidence in the permanent dentition.

To establish a reliable screening method for caries prediction and to identify predominant risk factors, this study tested whether a cross-sectional caries risk model assessed at age 7 could be used to predict future caries onset in the permanent first molars at age 10 in 3,303 children born in 1989. As prediction variables, assessing the believed risk, baseline data at age 7 on oral health status, oral hygiene level, oral health behaviour and sociodemographic factors were used. The real risk, based on data collected for the first permanent molars during the follow-up, was assessed by differen

Orofacial findings in the Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome.

The Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome is a triad of congenital anomalies characterised by haemangiomas, varicosities, and unilateral bony and soft tissue hypertrophy. Hypertrophy usually affects one distal limb, but trunk or face may be affected. Cutaneous haemangiomas (nevus flammeus) of varying extent and irregular contour are often present in the hypertrophic regions. Varicosities may also be part of the vascular lesions of the syndrome. Orofacial manifestations include facial asymmetry, jaw enlargement, and malocclusions as well as premature tooth eruption. Two cases of the Klippel-Trénaunay synd

Endoscopic removal of an ectopic third molar obstructing the osteomeatal complex.

We report a rare case of an ectopic third molar at the level of the osteomeatal complex. A 21-year-old man came to us with a left-sided nasal obstruction of 2 years' duration. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses revealed that an aberrant tooth was obstructing the osteomeatal complex and bulging into the ethmoid infundibulum. Opacity of the entire left maxillary sinus indicated the presence of an associated cystic formation. A transnasal endoscopic sinus technique was employed to create a large middle meatal antrostomy and to remove the tooth as well as the cystic contents and cyst wal

A natural history of cleidocranial dysplasia.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia associated with clavicle hypoplasia and dental abnormalities. The condition is caused by mutations in the CBFA1 gene, a transcription factor that activates osteoblast differentiation. Clinical characteristics associated with CCD have previously been described in case reports and small case series. This study was undertaken to gain a more complete delineation of clinical complications associated with CCD. The study population was composed of 90 CCD individuals and 56 relative controls ascertained from genetic and dental p
