A newer approach in positioning teeth for dental prosthetics using lateral cephalometric, trans-cranial radiographs, and the Denar-Witzig articulator: a case of hypodontia in an adolescent patient.

Traditionally in full denture prosthetics, anterior teeth are set on the models, independent of the effects on the face. More enlightened dentists, will then adjust the wax-up for speech, and some effects on the lips. Consideration is infrequently given to restoring the face by repositioning the teeth and mandible. Rarely is thought given to the effects of occlusion on the posture of the body. This report uses several techniques to restore facial esthetics and body posture. The techniques used include a cephalometric radiograph, transcranial radiographs, an articulator that has an adjustable "

Intranasal tooth as a complication of cleft lip and alveolus in a four year old child: case report and literature review.

Ectopic position of teeth is not rare. The presence of teeth have been reported in ovaries, testes, anterior mediastinum, and pre-sacral regions. In the maxillofacial region, teeth have been found in maxillary sinus, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, chin, nose, and even orbit. Approximately 50 cases of a tooth in the nasal cavity have been reported in literature. However, an intranasal tooth in cases of cleft lip and palate is comparatively rare. Intranasal teeth can cause problems such as nasal obstruction, chronic rhinorrhea and speech problems. Sometimes however, they are totally sympt

Oral findings in Carpenter syndrome.

Acrocephalopolysyndactyly Type II (Carpenter Syndrome) is determined by autosomal recessive inheritance. Only some 40 cases have been described. Variable clinical signs have been described including prolonged retention of primary teeth and hypodontia. This paper describes the oral and dental findings in a family containing two affected brothers. The family pedigree is informative, as the mother has had children by three partners. The two affected individuals are full brothers. The first affected brother has delayed dental development, severe hypodontia and small tooth crown size. Mesio-distal

Overlay removable partial dentures for a patient with ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical report.

The orofacial characteristics of ectodermal dysplasia include anodontia or hypodontia, hypoplastic conical teeth, underdevelopment of the alveolar ridges, frontal bossing, a depressed nasal bridge, protuberant lips, and hypotrichosis. Patients with this disease often need complex prosthetic treatment. The options for a definitive treatment plan may include fixed, removable, or implant-supported prostheses, singly or in combination. However, financial constraints and other priorities can prevent patients from choosing the most desirable treatment. This clinical report describes the diagnosis an

Eruption of the central incisor, the intermaxillary suture, and maxillary growth in patients with a single median maxillary central incisor.

The occurrence of a single median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) is a very rare condition and might be a sign of a more severe midline defect, which could be a mild degree of holoprosencephaly. Absence of the internasal and partial absence of the intermaxillary suture has been observed in a fetus with holoprosencephaly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intermaxillary suture, the eruption pattern of the single central incisor in the SMMCI condition, and the growth of the maxilla in a group of patients with SMMCI. A similar study was not found in the scientific literature. The ma

Characteristics of incisor-premolar hypodontia in families.

Nonsyndromic tooth agenesis is a genetically and phenotypically heterogenous condition. It is generally assumed that different phenotypic forms are caused by different mutated genes. We analyzed inheritance and phenotype of hypodontia and dental anomalies in 214 family members in three generations of 11 probands collected for genetic linkage study on incisor-premolar hypodontia (IPH). Our analysis confirms the autosomal-dominant transmission with reduced penetrance of IPH. The prevalence of hypodontia and/or peg-shaped teeth was over 40% in first- and second-degree relatives and 18% in first c

Missing lateral incisors in Iron Age South-East Asians as possible indicators of dental agenesis.

The absence of lateral incisors is generally a reflection of agenesis or hypodontia, with a significant genetic basis and possibly environmental influence on the phenotypic expression. A human skeletal sample from the Iron Age cemetery of Noen U-Loke in Thailand has a very high prevalence at 79% of adults (30/38) with at least one incisor missing in either maxilla or mandible. If the cause of this high rate is genetic, it may be indicative of homogeneity, and, therefore, endogamy and probably isolation, of the population represented. Supporting agenesis as the explanation for this is the lack

Dental enamel formation and its impact on clinical dentistry.

The nature of tooth enamel is of inherent interest to dental professionals. The current-day clinical practice of dentistry involves the prevention of enamel demineralization, the promotion of enamel remineralization, the restoration of cavitated enamel where demineralization has become irreversible, the vital bleaching of dental enamel that has become discolored, and the diagnosis and treatment of developmental enamel malformations, which can be caused by environmental or genetic factors. On a daily basis, dental health providers make diagnostic and treatment decisions that are influenced by t

Good occlusal practice in children's dentistry.

The difference between paediatric dentistry and most other branches of dentistry is that in the child the occlusion is changing. Consequently 'Good Occlusal Practice' in children is a matter of making the right clinical decisions for the future occlusion. The clinician needs to be able to predict the influence that different treatment options will have on the occlusion when the child's development is complete.

Face, palate, and craniofacial morphology in patients with a solitary median maxillary central incisor.

The occurrence of a solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) is a very rare condition and might be a sign of a mild degree of holoprosencephaly. In this investigation, material from 10 patients, nine girls and one boy with a SMMCI (8-17 years of age) registered in orthodontic clinics was examined. The purpose was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and craniofacial morphology in this group of patients. Oral photographs, study casts, profile radiographs, and orthopantomograms were analysed. The study showed that this group of SMMCI patients were characterized by an indistinct phil

Genetic mutations in certain head and neck conditions of interest to the dentist.

This article identifies certain syndromes of the head and neck, which a dentist may see in clinical practice, and relates these syndromes to their sites of mutation on involved genes. This paper is timely with the near completion of the Human Genome Project, the mapping of the entire human genetic material. Knowing the site of the genetic lesion is important in helping clinicians understand the genetic basis for these conditions, and may help in our future understanding of remedies and treatments.

A recurrent deletion in the ubiquitously expressed NEMO (IKK-gamma) gene accounts for the vast majority of incontinentia pigmenti mutations.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an X-linked dominant disorder characterized by abnormal skin pigmentation, retinal detachment, anodontia, alopecia, nail dystrophy and central nervous system defects. This disorder segregates as a male lethal disorder and causes skewed X-inactivation in female patients. IP is caused by mutations in a gene called NEMO, which encodes a regulatory component of the IkappaB kinase complex required to activate the NF-kappaB pathway. Here we report the identification of 277 mutations in 357 unrelated IP patients. An identical genomic deletion within NEMO accounted for 9

The dentofacial manifestations of XXXXY syndrome: a case report.

This paper presents a six-year-old patient with XXXXY syndrome, whose oral findings included a cleft soft palate, hyper- or meso-taurodontism in eight primary molars and in the mandibular permanent first molars, five congenitally missing premolars, and delayed development of the permanent tooth germs. The maxillary and mandibular primary central incisors were in a cross-bite relationship. Cephalometric findings showed a short ramus of the mandible and a short maxilla in the anterioposterior plane. The anteroposterior jaw relationship was in harmony. The cross-bite was considered to be due to t

Retrospective survey of dental anomalies and pathology detected on maxillary occlusal radiographs in children between 3 and 5 years of age.

PURPOSE: Radiographs play an important role in the diagnosis of anomalies and pathology of the oral structures of young children as well as in the interception and management of developmental problems in the dentition. The occlusal film, commonly indicated in the young child, is a helpful tool in establishing a baseline and in revealing certain region-specific dental concerns in a timely fashion. The purpose of this retrospective study was to perform a comprehensive examination of maxillary occlusal radiographs in a clinical pediatric population and to determine the prevalence of dental anomal

Facial infiltrating lipomatosis.

Facial infiltrating lipomatosis is a rare congenital disorder in which mature lipocytes invade adjacent tissue. The phenotypic features include soft-tissue and skeletal hypertrophy, premature dental eruption, and regional macrodontia. There is a high risk for regrowth after resection that is, perforce, subtotal. The etiology, natural history, optimal management, and relationship to other disorders of fatty overgrowth are unclear. In this study, the clinical features, radiographic findings, histopathology, and postoperative results were analyzed in 13 patients with facial infiltrating lipomatos

Clinical features of incontinentia pigmenti with emphasis on dermatoglyphic findings.

Incontinentia pigmenti is a syndrome characterized by both systemic and oral manifestations. Presented here are the dental, clinical, radiological, genetic and dermatoglyphic findings of a 6 year old female case and her family members. The following features were apparent: oligodontia in maxillary and mandibular arches in both dentition, peg-shaped incisors and brown lesions on the body surface. No other problems were observed. The case had remarkable dermatoglyphic findings such as hypothenar loops associated with distally displaced axial triradii on both palms, reduced total finger and summe
