BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chronological age (CA) refers to the time elapsed since birth, whereas dental age (DA) reflects biological maturation based on dental development. In clinical practice the assessment of dental development supports diagnosis and treatment planning. Understanding the biological factors involved in dental maturation is therefore essential.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether polymorphisms in specific genes encoding growth factors are associated with DA variation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study analyzed panoramic radiographs from orthodontic records of 7‑ to

Permanent molar loss is commonly encountered in clinical practice, and eruption of the opposing teeth caused by their prolonged absence increases the complexity of restorative treatment. How to rapidly and efficiently regain precise restorative space presents a clinical challenge. Orthodontic temporary anchorage devices (TADs) have been regarded as a minimally invasive treatment alternative with absolute anchorage and can simplify orthodontic intrusion. This digital technique aims to simulate the definitive restorative treatment outcome using a digital workflow that guides the design and 3-dim

BACKGROUND: Permanent maxillary canine agenesis is uncommon, and bilateral absence is particularly rare. When eruption is delayed in the canine region, developmental absence must be distinguished from impaction or ectopic development because the diagnosis changes orthodontic and restorative planning.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old Japanese boy was referred because his permanent teeth had not erupted in the maxillary anterior region. Panoramic radiography showed absence of the permanent tooth germs at FDI 12, 13, 23, and 45. Targeted cone-beam computed tomography confirmed that no impacted o

BACKGROUND: Radiographic assessment of the eruption and maturation status of third molars has been widely used for age estimation.
AIM: This study compared the effectiveness of radiographic age estimation based on the eruption and mineralization status of third molars, and a new regression equation combining both criteria was proposed.
METHODOLOGY: Panoramic radiographs from 269 individuals aged 12-25 years were assessed for third molar eruption and mineralization status. Olze et al. (2007) criterion was applied to evaluate eruption levels, whereas a new simplified criterion was proposed to

PURPOSE: General growth as well as functional demands that are associated with developmental needs of young individuals are said to contribute to the changes in micro-architecture of maxilla. However, little is known about the nature of these changes on the maxilla, particularly across the different stages of dental development and eruption. Thus, this study aimed to assess variations in micro-architecture of the alveolar region of the human sub-adult and adult maxilla across different stages of dental development and eruption.
METHODS: The study sample included seventy-nine individuals, subd

Tooth and maxillomandibular bone development is a synergistic process precisely and coordinately regulated by genetic programs, molecular signaling networks, and external environmental factors. Recent rapid progress in in situ biomechanical measurement techniques, cellular mechanical imaging, and molecular tracing technologies has greatly promoted research in developmental biomechanics. Accumulating evidence indicates that mechanical stimuli can be converted into biochemical signals via cellular mechanotransduction pathways, thereby modulating key cellular processes, including proliferation, d

UNLABELLED: Knowledge of the timing and sequence of permanent tooth eruption is essential for assessing occlusal development and providing population-specific reference standards to support diagnosis, prevention, and treatment planning.
AIM: To estimate mean age for eruption of permanent teeth, except third molars, in children in Buenos Aires City (CABA), compare means according to sex, jaw and laterality, and identify the eruption sequence per arch.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: An observational, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted (March-July 2024) on 4- to 15-year-old children who re

Excessive gingival display is a common esthetic concern among patients seeking smile enhancement. Altered passive eruption (APE) is a frequent etiologic factor and is characterized by incomplete apical migration of the gingival margin following tooth eruption. Accurate diagnosis and adherence to periodontal biologic principles are essential for achieving stable and predictable outcomes in esthetic crown lengthening (ECL). This article reviews the biologic and surgical principles of ECL, with particular emphasis on APE, and illustrates its management through a clinical case. A 28-year-old syste

Delayed tooth eruption is frequently considered a benign developmental variation but may represent an early sign of genetically driven tooth agenesis. We evaluated a 22-month-old female presenting with markedly delayed eruption (only eight primary teeth) and a positive family history of ectodermal features. Given the inconclusive early radiographic findings, whole-exome sequencing (WES) was utilized. WES revealed the proband carried a heterozygous EDARADD variant (NM_080738:c.328G > T; p. Asp110Tyr). Subsequent familial segregation analysis identified an additional heterozygous WNT10A variant

Traumatic dental injuries to primary teeth may result in developmental disturbances in the permanent successors because of the close anatomical relationship between primary tooth apices and developing permanent tooth germs. Injuries occurring during crown formation may interfere with normal odontogenesis and lead to crown dilaceration. A 7-year-old healthy boy presented with abnormal eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors. At 2.5 years of age, he had sustained avulsion of both primary maxillary central incisors and crown fractures of the primary lateral incisors, followed by extr

Ankylosed primary molars are relatively common during the mixed dentition period; however, ankylosis does not always coincide with infraocclusion. This systematic review assessed the clinical evidence regarding ankylosis of primary molars, including its etiology, diagnosis, and management, and discussed whether infraocclusion is primarily caused by ankylosis or instead reflects a broader disturbance of tooth eruption. A literature search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines across three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) has traditionally been regarded as a biofilm-mediated disease driven by sugar exposure and acidogenic microorganisms. However, this perspective primarily captures the final stage of a much longer biological process. We propose the Developmental Ecology of the Infant Oral Ecosystem as a conceptual framework in which ECC represents the clinical manifestation of a disrupted developmental ecology of the infant oral ecosystem, resulting from altered host-microbe-environment interactions that operate from the prenatal period through the first 1,000 days of li

INTRODUCTION: Congenitally or traumatically missing teeth in children create challenges for the dental provider when replacing missing teeth in a developing dental arch. Tooth autotransplantation (AT) has been shown to be a successful alternative to removable and fixed restorations. Yet in the United States, the prevalence of the procedure is unknown, and the barriers to its use are not well-studied. This project explored the current state of AT treatment among U.S. orthodontists and pediatric dentists including awareness, current utilization, and barriers influencing utilization of AT.

BACKGROUND: A clinical scenario in the esthetic zone is the presence of short clinical crowns, which, in the absence of occlusal wear and other injuries, is referred to as altered passive eruption (APE). The presence of APE can lead to esthetic issues, which can impact the patient's smile harmony. In esthetically demanding cases, APE must be addressed prior to or in conjunction with implant therapy, and failure to do so can result in esthetic complications and failure in prosthetic planning. This case report exhibits a digital workflow in treating such patients to achieve optimal outcomes.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent sterile pustules, erythema, scaling, and hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles. Oral infectious foci and periodontal inflammation have been implicated as aggravating factors, particularly in Japanese patients. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with longstanding PPP and a previous course of apremilast that she had discontinued because of perceived insufficient benefit. At presentation, the Palmoplantar Pustulosis Area and Severity Index (PPPASI) score was 37.8. Dental evaluation identified multip

Background: Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a metabolic bone disorder caused by impaired calcium and phosphate homeostasis resulting from insufficient vitamin D. In children, severe vitamin D deficiency can disturb the mineralization of growing bones and teeth. Although the skeletal manifestations are well recognized, reports describing generalized developmental enamel defects affecting nearly all permanent teeth remain limited. Methods: A 6-year-9-month-old Japanese boy with a history of vitamin D deficiency rickets diagnosed at 2 years 5 months of age was referred to our department for evalu

The objective of this study is to compare vital pulpotomy versus pulpectomy in children with primary molar pulpitis and their effects on successor permanent tooth eruption. A total of 240 children were divided into a pulpotomy group (n = 112) and a pulpectomy group (n = 128) and followed up for ≥12 months. Quality of life, clinical efficacy, root resorption, and permanent tooth eruption patterns were compared. Compared with pulpectomy, pulpotomy showed higher treatment efficacy and a 12-month tooth survival rate, greater improvement in quality of life, fewer adverse events, less root resorptio
