Late developing supernumerary teeth and congenital absence of the upper right lateral incisor in the maxillary anterior region: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Numerous non-syndromic late developing supernumerary teeth have been published in the premolar regions, but similar findings in the maxillary anterior regions as in this case are rarely found; even rarer is hypodontia occurring in the same region; this simultaneous occurrence is known as hypohyperdontia. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper reports a case of two mesiodens and a late developing supernumerary tooth appearing successively in the maxillary anterior region, resulting in severe rotation and displacement of adjacent incisors. By regular clinical and radiological monitoring, we

Supernumerary teeth: A pictorial review and revised classification.

Current literature regarding supernumerary teeth poses the risk of confusion as ambiguity in the terminology and classification of supernumerary teeth permits differing interpretations. Uncertainty in this regard distorts data on the true incidence and prevalence of supernumerary teeth. This pictorial review provides an overview of the current understanding regarding the development of supernumerary teeth, their positional and morphological classification, and eruptive alterations. We highlight the ambiguity in defining supernumerary teeth and propose an updated classification for the descript

Disturbances of Dental Development in Cleidocranial Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the delay in dental development in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) applying a longitudinal approach of maturational stages of teeth. A secondary objective was to examine whether an increasing number of supernumerary teeth influences dental development. METHODS: A total of 38 patients were included, consisting of 13 patients with CCD and 25 without CCD, selected from the Generation R Study. Both groups were matched by age and number of supernumerary teeth.Dental development was assessed using the Demirjian method. Linear mixed models were

The prevalence of dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and odontoma in a Chinese paediatric population: an epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and odontoma collectively exert a significant impact on the aesthetics and function of patients. Studies have shown that early detection and intervention may alleviate complications. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs and medical records of 5,015 patients aged 5.5-13.9 years who underwent paediatric dentistry at the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Fujian Medical University between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed for dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and odontoma. All data were analysed using SPSS 26.0. RESULTS: The total preva

Prenatal ultrasonography and genetic analysis of fetal cleidocranial dysplasia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an infrequent clinical condition with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. It is characterized by abnormal clavicles, patent sutures and fontanelles, supernumerary teeth, and short stature. Approximately 60%-70% of patients with CCD have mutations in the RUNX family transcription factor 2 gene. However, prenatal diagnosis of CCD is difficult when the family history is unknown. CASE SUMMARY: We report a rare case of fetal CCD with an unknown family history, confirmed by prenatal ultrasonography and genetic testing at a gestational age of 16 we

Surgical Approach to Bilateral Impacted and Inverted Mesiodentes in a Nonsyndromic Pediatric Patient: A Case Report and Brief Literature Review.

Supernumerary teeth (ST) are a form of abnormal dental development and may not always present with symptoms. This case report discusses an eight-year-old child who presented with spacing in the maxillary anterior region. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral impacted and inverted mesiodentes, which were successfully managed through surgical extraction and orthodontic treatment. The postoperative course was uneventful, resulting in satisfactory outcomes for both the patient and his parents. We emphasize the importance of periodic check-ups during the early stages of tooth exfoliation, inc

A surgical perspective on removable orthodontics and unidentified supernumerary teeth: are we aligned?

Patients undergoing orthodontics may be referred for specialist oral surgery services as part of an orthodontic-led treatment plan. Surgical interventions include extraction of teeth not amenable to alignment, such as supernumerary teeth. Aligner treatment is an accessible form of orthodontic treatment which has demonstrated a sustained demand. Aligners present several attractive features for patients, which require balance against risks of treatment through clinical examination and discussion with a qualified dentist. Dentists providing aligner treatment should consider the interface with ora

Extraction of teeth 11 and 21 due to gemination and space closure with skeletal anchorage in a patient with class III tendency: a case report.

Tooth gemination is a dental phenomenon in which a single tooth bud attempts to divide into two, resulting in the formation of a structure that appears as two teeth but originates from the same follicle. This partial separation is often indicated clinically by a groove or depression that suggests the presence of two distinct teeth (Rajeswari M, Ananthalakshmi R. 2011. Gemination-case report and review. Indian Journal of Multidisciplinary Dentistry). The distinction between gemination and fusion plays an important role in treatment planning. If the number of teeth is one less, the tooth is fuse

Association between 3D characteristics of single unilaterally impacted mesiodens and root development of adjacent maxillary central incisors: a retrospective study with cone-beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the detrimental effects of single unilaterally impacted mesiodens on the root development of adjacent maxillary central incisors and to explore the key influencing factors. METHODS: A total of 552 patients aged 5-12 years with single unilaterally impacted mesiodens were included in the study. The maxillary central incisor with greater overlap with the mesiodens in the coronal view was identified as the affected tooth, while the contralateral central incisor served as the control one. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data for these patients were ret

Bilaterally Erupted Conical-shaped Supernumerary Tooth in a Mixed Dentition: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Supplemental teeth present in the normal dentition are known as supernumerary teeth, the most common being mesiodens, which are usually seen in the premaxillary region. Supernumerary teeth are considered as one of the most common dental anomalies in the primary and early mixed dentition. A supernumerary tooth in the primary or mixed dentition usually causes ectopic or delayed eruption of permanent incisors, which may further alter the occlusion and might also compromise esthetics. Here, we discuss a case of bilateral supernumerary teeth in a mixed dentition in a female child. HOW

Familial multiple impacted supernumerary teeth: Case report.

Multiple impacted supernumerary teeth are rare and need a multidisciplinary approach for optimal management to reduce potential complications. Herein, we present the case of an otherwise generally healthy woman in her early 30s who presented to the oral medicine clinic with a chief complaint of multiple missing teeth. Family history revealed that her sister and brother had the same complaint. Panoramic and cone-beam computed tomography radiographic findings revealed the presence of multiple impacted supernumerary teeth in both jaws. Multiple radiopacities and frontal sinus osteoma were noted.
