Radiological features of double and inverted mesiodens: a systematic review of the literature and presentation of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Mesiodens are the most prevalent supernumerary teeth, defined as a dentition anomaly. Mesiodens account for 80% of all supernumerary teeth, with a prevalence in the general population of 0.15% -1.9%. Mesiodens show a higher frequency in man than in women, it is usually found in the front upper jaw, between the midlines of maxillary central teeth. It may be normally oriented or have inverted and transverse orientation. Single or multiple mesiodens may occur; however, double mesiodens is rarer (10-19% of all patients with mesiodens), and even rarer is its double inversion, with the c

Solitary mesiodens in primary dentition.

This article reports a rare case of a preschool-aged girl child with a supernumerary tooth in the maxillary anterior region between the primary central incisors. Clinical and radiographic evaluations confirmed the presence of a conical supernumerary tooth without any associated pathology or anomalies in the developing permanent dentition. The supernumerary tooth was extracted under local anaesthesia to prevent obstruction or deflection of the permanent central incisors. Postoperative healing was uneventful, with follow-up confirming satisfactory recovery. The article highlights the importance

A Rare Case of Bilateral Maxillary Supplemental Lateral Incisors.

Supplemental teeth are uncommon and often go undetected during routine dental examinations, especially when they resemble normal teeth in shape and size. In this case, a 17-year-old male presented with a rare finding: bilateral supplemental maxillary lateral incisors. Although he reported no discomfort, the presence of these extra teeth had the potential to affect his bite. On examination, the additional lateral incisors looked almost identical to the natural ones and showed complete root development on radiographs. After a thorough evaluation, the treatment plan involved extracting the supple

Deep learning-based automated detection of supernumerary teeth in pediatric panoramic radiographs.

INTRODUCTION: Supernumerary teeth are a common developmental anomaly in pediatric patients, potentially leading to complications such as impaction, crowding, and delayed eruption. Accurate and early detection is critical to prevent these sequelae and guide appropriate intervention strategies. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and clinical applicability of a convolutional neural networks-based deep learning model (YOLOv8) for the automated localization and binary classification of supernumerary teeth on pediatric panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective a

Multiple Dental Anomalies on the Same Side of the Arch in a Single Individual: An Unusual Occurrence.

Multiple dental anomalies are often associated with syndromes affecting the orofacial region. Macrodontia refers to the enlargement of a tooth and is relatively rarer than its counterpart, microdontia. Likewise, while the presence of multiple roots and root canals is common in permanent molars, a maxillary molar with a single root and a single root canal is extremely rare. Hyperdontia, or the presence of supernumerary teeth, most commonly occurs in the maxillary anterior and mandibular premolar regions. The occurrence of a maxillary distomolar is uncommon, and the development of a cyst around

A Rare Case of Bilateral Mesiodens With Dens Invaginatus Obstructing Permanent Incisor Eruption.

The co-occurrence of mesiodens and dens invaginatus (DI) is very uncommon. Such anomalies may impede the eruption of permanent maxillary central incisors and can appear radiographically similar to normally developing teeth. An 11-year-old girl presented with failure of eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors. Panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed two palatobuccally positioned supernumerary mesiodens, both of which exhibited DI. Surgical extraction of the mesiodens was performed, and guided bone regeneration (GBR) was carried out to preserve the al

Rare Presentation of Multiple Non-syndromic Supernumerary Premolars Affecting All Quadrants.

Supernumerary teeth are developmental anomalies that may occur anywhere in the dental arch, most frequently in the maxilla. While single or few supernumeraries are relatively common, the presence of multiple supernumerary premolars in all quadrants is an extremely rare phenomenon, particularly in non-syndromic patients. This report describes a 12-year-old male presenting with dental caries, in whom routine radiographic examination revealed multiple supernumerary premolars distributed across all quadrants. Relevant literature is also discussed to highlight the rarity, clinical implications, and

Progressive tooth pattern changes in Cilk1-deficient mice depending on Hedgehog signaling.

Primary cilia function as critical sensory organelles that mediate multiple signaling pathways, including the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway, which is essential for organ patterning and morphogenesis. Disruptions in Hh signaling have been implicated in supernumerary tooth formation and molar fusion in mutant mice. Cilk1, a highly conserved serine/threonine-protein kinase localized within primary cilia, plays a critical role in ciliary transport. Loss of Cilk1 results in severe ciliopathy phenotypes, including polydactyly, edema, and cleft palate. However, the role of Cilk1 in tooth development remains

[Treatment of root fracture of immature maxillary permanent central incisor combined with impacted supernumerary tooth in the apical region: a case report].

Dental trauma is a common oral condition in children. For single-type trauma to young permanent teeth, timely treatment often results in a high survival rate for both the teeth and the pulp. However, in cases of complex dental trauma or when supernumerary teeth are impacted near the apex of the injured tooth, the prognosis is less predictable. This article reports a case of root fracture in an immature maxillary permanent central incisor combined with impacted supernumerary tooth in the apical region. After supernumerary tooth extraction and pulp revascularization therapy, the case demonstrate

Case Report: Minimally invasive removal of impacted supernumerary teeth using digital 3D-printed surgical guides: a case series.

The surgical management of impacted supernumerary teeth (ST) remains challenging because of their hidden position and close proximity to vital anatomical structures. These guides offered accurate intraoperative guidance and minimized both bone removal and soft-tissue dissection. A standardized digital workflow that integrates cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral scans was employed to create patient-specific guides that precisely dictated the osteotomy location. The guides provided critical intraoperative guidance and minimized the extent of bone removal and soft tissue dissection
