Microdontia after chemotherapy in a child treated for neuroblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy used on paediatric oncology patients often causes disturbances in dental development. Aim of this case report is to present the late effects of chemotherapy on dental development in a patient treated for neuroblastoma at early age. DESIGN: Case report. RESULTS: This paper presents a female patient treated at early age with surgery and chemotherapy for a neuroblastoma (stage IVS) in the right thorax and massive liver metastases. The examination of the patient at age 11.7 years showed microdontia of six teeth. In three of them size and form of the crown were affected, w

Variations in the number of teeth in wild Japanese serow (Naemorhedus crispus).

Skulls of 755 Japanese serow (Naemorhedus crispus) were examined for numerical anomalies of teeth, and these were found in 30 (4.0%) specimens. In addition to supernumerary and congenital missing teeth, embedded teeth were also identified. Supernumerary teeth were found in 10 (1.3%) specimens, congenital missing teeth were found in nine (1.2%) specimens, and embedded teeth were found in 11 (1.5%) specimens. Supernumerary teeth were found among the incisors, the upper and lower premolars, and the lower molars. Based on the appearance of certain tooth classes, their size, and their form, atavism

Morphoregulation of teeth: modulating the number, size, shape and differentiation by tuning Bmp activity.

During development and evolution, the morphology of ectodermal organs can be modulated so that an organism can adapt to different environments. We have proposed that morphoregulation can be achieved by simply tilting the balance of molecular activity. We test the principles by analyzing the effects of partial downregulation of Bmp signaling in oral and dental epithelia of the keratin 14-Noggin transgenic mouse. We observed a wide spectrum of tooth phenotypes. The dental formula changed from 1.0.0.3/1.0.0.3 to 1.0.0.2(1)/1.0.0.0. All mandibular and M3 maxillary molars were selectively lost beca

Root growth in the teeth of 46,XY females.

The subjects of this study are women with a male sex chromosome complement or 46,XY females who show the complete form of the testicular feminization syndrome (CTF). The basic endocrine defect is end organ insensitivity to androgens. They are on average tall individuals and also show an increase in head and face dimensions relative to normal females. A size increase is likewise evident in permanent tooth crowns and here we report permanent tooth root lengths in eight 46,XY females, their five female relatives and population control females and males. Measurements were made from panoramic radio

Conservative adjunct to esthetic orthodontic treatment in young patients.

The esthetic effect of orthodontic treatment in young patients may sometimes be incomplete without performing additional procedures related to the form and texture of the anterior teeth. Six young patients, aged 7 to 21 years, presented for orthodontic treatment to improve their dental esthetics. The problems of tooth staining, mutilation, congenitally missing teeth, tooth size/arch length discrepancy, and sequellae of dental trauma neccessitated a combined orthodontic-prosthodontic treatment. Changing morphology and texture by conservative prosthetic procedures proved to be a successful compl

Endodontic management of taurodontic teeth.

Taurodontism is a morpho-anatomical change in the shape of the tooth in which the body of the tooth is enlarged and the roots are reduced in size. Although taurodontism is a dental rarity, this unusual radicular form should merit circumspect considerations in planning and treatment. Endodontic management in taurodont teeth has been described as complex and difficult. The present paper describes the successful completion of endodontic treatment in three taurodontic teeth with appropriate use of instruments and techniques and also emphasizes the need for post endodontic rehabilitation.

Applications for direct composite restorations in orthodontics.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Besides prosthetic and indirect, laboratory-produced restorations, the focus of dental therapy is increasingly on restorative measures and direct restorations as minimally invasive treatment concepts. Thus, the use of direct composite restorations with modern restorative materials for the shaping and recontouring of teeth in combination with orthodontic treatment offers a diversified, extensive sphere of application. The aim of the study was to demonstrate applications for direct composite restorations with reference to selected cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The composites

Management of severe partial hypodontia: case report.

Hypodontia is characterized by partial or total congenital missing of one or more teeth, on one or both dentitions. Heredity is the main etiological factor and the principal clinical features are reduction on number, size and form of teeth, and late eruption. Removable partial prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, overdentures and adhesive prosthesis are alternative treatments; and the indication is type dependent. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical case of an eleven-year-old child with eight missing permanent teeth of idiopathic etiology. The patient had facial and skeletal symmetry,

Inherited polyneuropathy in Leonberger dogs: a mixed or intermediate form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease?

A spontaneous distal, symmetrical polyneuropathy in related Leonberger dogs with onset between 1 to 9 years of age was characterized clinically, electrophysiologically, histologically, and morphometrically. Exercise intolerance and weakness was associated with a high-steppage pelvic-limb gait, a loss or change in the pitch of the bark, and dyspnea. Neurological examination revealed marked atrophy of the distal limb muscles, depressed spinal and cranial nerve reflexes, and weak or absent movement of the laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles. Electrophysiological evaluation was consistent with denerv

Matrix metalloproteinase -2, -8, -9, and -13 in gingival crevicular fluid of short root anomaly patients.

The aim of the present observational study was to identify and characterize matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -2, -8, -9, and -13 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with short root anomaly (SRA). GCF samples collected from affected maxillary central incisors and premolars of five SRA patients and five systemically and periodontally healthy controls were analysed using the zymographic technique for gelatinase A and B (MMP-2 and -9) and by Western blot for collagenase -2 and -3 (MMP-8 and -13). SRA GCF revealed MMP-9 (30 per cent of the total gelatinolytic activity), of which 18 per cen

Pathological findings in the x-linked form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a morphometric and ultrastructural analysis.

Mutations in the connexin 32 gene (Cx 32) are associated with the x-linked form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX) and segregate with a CMT 1 phenotype. The gap junction protein Cx 32 is expressed in myelinating Schwann cells and has been localized to regions of non-compacted cytoplasm in paranodes and in Schmidt-Lanterman incisures. Mutant Cx 32 myelin proteins are predicted to impair Schwann cell functions. We have studied the resulting pathology in motor and sensory nerves from the probands of 13 CMTX kindreds with precisely defined genotype. This report provides a detailed descriptive a

Effect of Down syndrome on the dimensions of dental crowns and tissues.

Abnormal growth in Down syndrome (DS) is reflected by variable reduction in size and simplification in form of many physical traits. This study aimed to compare the thickness of enamel and dentine in deciduous and permanent mandibular incisor teeth between DS and non-DS individuals and to clarify how these tissues contribute to altered tooth size in DS. Sample groups comprised 61 mandibular incisors (29 permanent and 32 deciduous) from DS individuals and 55 mandibular incisors (29 permanent and 26 deciduous) from non-DS individuals. Maximum mesiodistal and labiolingual crown dimensions were me

Enamel hypoplasia in the deciduous teeth of great apes: variation in prevalence and timing of defects.

The prevalence of enamel hypoplasia in the deciduous teeth of great apes has the potential to reveal episodes of physiological stress in early stages of ontogenetic development. However, little is known about enamel defects of deciduous teeth in great apes. Unresolved questions addressed in this study are: Do hypoplastic enamel defects occur with equal frequency in different groups of great apes? Are enamel hypoplasias more prevalent in the deciduous teeth of male or female apes? During what phase of dental development do enamel defects tend to form? And, what part of the dental crown is most

Radiographic determination of the position of the maxillary lateral incisor in the cleft alveolus and parameters for assessing its habilitation prospects.

OBJECTIVE: Develop patient selection criteria and guidelines for the diagnostic work-up for early secondary alveolar bone graft designed to accommodate a lateral incisor in the cleft. DESIGN: A literature review with clinical examples. INTERVENTIONS: For the majority of cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients, the timing of the secondary alveolar bone graft procedure is devised to accommodate the eruption of the maxillary canine. However, when the lateral incisor is present in the cleft area, a decision may be made to perform early grafting in order to salvage an additional tooth. Appropriate ca

A novel locus for autosomal recessive peripheral neuropathy in the EGR2 region on 10q23.

During our studies of Romany (Gypsy) families with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy-Lom, we have identified a large kindred with two independently segregating autosomal recessive neuropathies. The novel disorder, named "hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy-Russe" (HMSNR), presented as a severe disabling form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with prominent sensory loss, moderately reduced motor nerve conduction velocity, and a high threshold for electrical nerve stimulation. A genome scan in two branches of the large kindred detected linkage to the 10q22-q23 region containing the early

Hereditary and environmental dental findings in identification of human remains.

The paper presents the results on hereditary and environmental dental findings in identification of human remains exhumed from mass graves in the Republic of Croatia. The total of 17,880 teeth from all the categories (incisors, canines, premolars and molars) was examined. Hereditary findings of the teeth such as shape, size, position, as well as age were used in all of the cases confirming and completing the identification. In only 15% of the cases they were the starting points for the identification that would be later confirmed with another 3-5 traditional identification procedures. Disturba

Rho-dependent regulation of cell spreading by the tetraspan membrane protein Gas3/PMP22.

Gas3/PMP22 plays a crucial role in regulating myelin formation and maintenance, and different genetic alterations in gas3/PMP22 are responsible for a set of human peripheral neuropathies. We have previously demonstrated that Gas3/PMP22 could regulate susceptibility to apoptosis in NIH3T3 cells but not in REF 52 cells. In this report we demonstrate that when the apoptotic response triggered by gas3/PMP22 was counteracted by Bcl-2 coexpression, morphological changes were observed. Time-lapse analysis confirmed that Gas3/PMP22 can modulate cell spreading, and this effect was strengthened after in

Enamel hypoplasia in deciduous teeth of great apes: do differences in defect prevalence imply differential levels of physiological stress?

This paper presents new data on enamel hypoplasia in the deciduous canine teeth of great apes. The enamel defect under consideration is known as localized hypoplasia of primary canines (LHPC), and is characterized by an area of thin or missing enamel on the labial surface of deciduous canine teeth (Skinner [1986a] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 69:59-69). Goals of this study are: 1) to determine if significant differences in the frequency of LHPC occur among three genera of great apes, and 2) to evaluate variation in LHPC prevalence among great apes as evidence of differential physiological stress. [Conservative treatment of upper anterior dental discrepancy during orthodontic therapy].

The orthodontic therapeutic sequence used in cases with dento-dental discrepancy for reduced mesiodistal size and congenital absent lateral upper incisors, is described. The importance of correct conoid tooth replacement in the programmed space between the other teeth and its restorative treatment in order to obtain the best biomechanical control is stressed. The contemporaneous presence of the form and volume anomaly of the 12th and the missing 22nd due to agenesia demanded an interdisciplinary approach. For the restoration of the conoid tooth the authors used a microhybrid composite for the

A catalogue of anomalies and traits of the permanent dentition of southern Chinese.

Variations in size, form and morphology of the teeth can result in anomalies such as macrodontia, microdontia, hyperdontia, hypodontia, double tooth, dens evaginatus, dens invaginatus, and talon cusp. A trait may occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups. Among these traits are shovel-shaped incisors, lingual tubercle, Carabelli's trait and protostylid of the molars. Because people are traveling more frequently than ever before, and there are many migrants in different parts of the world, it is increasingly important for dental professionals to be aware of the characteristics and prevalence
