Oligodontia--a case report.

Oligodontia is defined as the congenital absence of six or more teeth, excluding the third molars. Genetic factors play an important role in oligodontia, which can occur as an isolated finding or as part of a syndrome. Characteristic dental symptoms are a reduced number of teeth, a reduction in tooth size, anomalies of tooth form, and delayed eruption. This article describes treatment of a 6-year-old girl with congenital absence of 16 permanent teeth. Her malocclusion was corrected by orthodontic therapy, and removable partial dentures were made to improve esthetics and chewing function.

Comparison of numeric techniques in the analysis of cleft palate dental arch form change.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative descriptions of form (size and shape) changes are significant to the understanding of the development, treatment planning, and prognosis of patients born with cleft lip and palate. This study compared the results of traditional dental arch form change measurements, such as width, depth, perimeter, and area, with four numeric methods: finite element scaling analysis, macroelement method, Euclidean distance matrix analysis, and conventional least-squares and resistant-fit theta rho Procrustes analyses. DESIGN: Using tooth cusp landmarks on maxillary study casts, form cha

Changes in permeability caused by connexin 32 mutations underlie X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

The relationship between the loss of connexin 32 function and clinical manifestations of X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMTX) disease is unknown. Here, we report that eight of nine CMTX mutations investigated form channels with measurable electrical conductance. Single-channel studies of two mutations demonstrate reduced junctional permeability caused by a decrease in either pore size (S26L) or open channel probability (M34T) that favors residency in a low-conductance substate. Permeation of second messengers such as cAMP through reflexive gap junctions between adjacent cytoplasmic loops of mye

Maxillary canine impaction in patients with transverse maxillary deficiency.

Extensive literature exists concerning impacted maxillary canines. Tooth-size/arch-size discrepancy (lack of space) is a common etiologic factor of impacted canines. No studies exist documenting transverse maxillary deficiency as a causative factor for impacted canines. The purpose of this study was to determine whether patients with impacted maxillary canines have transverse deficiency and if other factors, such as arch length, arch perimeter, and arch form contribute to canine impaction. Fifty-seven (57) subjects with eighty-one (81) impacted maxillary canines were compared to one hundred-th

Prenatal craniofacial development: new insights on normal and abnormal mechanisms.

Technical advances are radically altering our concepts of normal prenatal craniofacial development. These include concepts of germ layer formation, the establishment of the initial head plan in the neural plate, and the manner in which head segmentation is controlled by regulatory (homeobox) gene activity in neuromeres and their derived neural crest cells. There is also a much better appreciation of ways in which new cell associations are established. For example, the associations are achieved by neural crest cells primarily through cell migration and subsequent cell interactions that regulate

EGF abrogation-induced fusilli-form dysmorphogenesis of Meckel's cartilage during embryonic mouse mandibular morphogenesis in vitro.

Mutations associated with genes of the EGF superfamily are implicated in facial malformations arising from abnormal development of the first branchial arch. EGF and EGF receptor (EGFr) transcripts are expressed in the mouse embryonic first branchial arch and derivatives from E9 through E15. EGF transcripts are localized to ectomesenchymal cells associated with precartilage, cartilage, bone and tooth-forming cells. EGF and EGFr proteins co-localize to the same cells suggesting an autocrine regulation. To test whether EGF effects the timing and positional information required for Meckel's cartil

The influence of unilateral cleft lip and palate on maxillary dental arch morphology.

A sample of 97 untreated cleft lip and palate adult patients, with and without Simonart's band, was analyzed. The dimensions and form of the maxillary dental arches were analyzed. Comparison of this sample with a "normal" group indicated maxillary dental arch size and shape are distorted by the presence of a cleft which is characterized by a constriction that becomes more severe in the medial and anterior regions. The presence of Simonart's band affects the cleft arch form, redirecting the anterior extremity of the major segment towards the minor segment.

Autosomal recessive form of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I.

We studied pathologic changes in sural nerve biopsies from four patients with probable autosomal recessive (AR) hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type I with a median motor nerve conduction velocity greater than 10 m/sec, comparing them with the pathologic features in autosomal dominant (AD) HMSN type I. The four recessive and two sporadic cases showed segmental demyelination. However, the classic onion bulbs of concentric Schwann cell processes, which occur in AD type I, were rare; many axons, also of a smaller size, were surrounded by onion bulbs of basal laminae. Schwann cells

[A case report on the achondroplasia and its dental findings].

Achondroplasia is characterized by an undergrowth of arms and legs bones, low height and undergrowth of the Basis cranil. The name of this disease was called Chondrodystrohia foetalis before Parrot reported the name of this disease as Achondroplasia, distinguished from other similar diseases. We are reporting in this paper on an 11-year, 2-month-old girl with Achondroplasia. The dental findings as follows: 1) Open bite was observed for the front teeth. 2) The size, number, form and growth of the teeth were usual. 3) The tongue was a little bigger than usual. 4) According to X-ray cephalometric

[A case report of supernumerary deciduous teeth with the permanent successor in the maxillary region].

We found pure primary supernumerary teeth in the maxillary right deciduous incisor region of a 3 year 11 month old girl. We reported the results of her oral and X-ray analysis results. We would like to report our findings on the results of her oral and X-ray analysis. 1) Two of the primary supernumerary teeth were found between the incisor and canine teeth in the right side of the primary dental arch, and their color, form and size were very similar to normal primary lateral incisor teeth. 2) We also found pure secondary supernumerary teeth by means of X-ray analysis. 3) We suggest that the pe

[Treatment of severe malpositions and impactions of the upper frontal teeth by fixed orthodontic techniques].

The upper frontal region is the site of various abnormalities of the teeth: in number, size, form and position. Crowding of the upper frontal teeth is one of the most common type of malocclusions. The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate treatment of 3 cases with predominant abnormalities of the upper frontal teeth performed by fixed orthodontic techniques. The first case had Class II division 2 malocclusion associated with an impacted upper right central incisor, as well as transposition of the upper right lateral incisor and canine (non-extraction case). The second patient pr

[Dental findings in a case of Chondrodysplasia Punctata].

Chondrodysplasia Punctata is a disease belonging to the metaphysia syndrome. This disease is characterized by endochondral punctata calcification of epiphysis or apophysis, short legs and hands, arthrogryposis, saddle nose, ichthyosis, cataract and mental retardation. This report concerns a case of Chondrodysplasia Punctata (Rhizomeric form) in a 4 year 1 month old girl. Observations were made from the dental point of view, and the findings were as follows: 1) The mesio-distal and bucco-lingual lengths of all primary teeth were smaller than the standard size. 2) Measuring the dental cast, the

[A histological observation of the primary teeth with enamel hypoplasia resulting from perinatal disturbance].

Two primary teeth with enamel hypoplasia from two cerebralpalsied children were subjected to histological examination. One primary tooth was B and the other was C. The location of enamel hypoplasia in these teeth was considered to coincide with the neonatal line reaching the enamel surface. The purpose of this study was to examine the location of the enamel hypoplasia in these teeth in relation to the neonatal line, and to detail the histological structure of the teeth. They were examined morphologically as well as histologically, by using a stereoscopic microscope, SEM, a light microscope and

Size and development of the dentition in endocrine deficiency.

Two case reports are presented of boys, who were found to have pituitary and thyroid dysfunction respectively. This was treated in childhood with replacement therapy. These deficiences are known to affect normal skeletal and dental development, but the cases described also showed marked effects on the dental tissues themselves with severe microdontia and abnormalities of crown and root form.

Taurodontism: an anomaly of teeth reflecting disruptive developmental homeostasis.

Two models concerning morphometric traits occurring frequently in aneuploidy states posit, respectively, 1) that they reflect the expression of specific major oligogenes for that trait on the chromosome involved or 2) that they result from a generalized disruption of developmental homeostasis. In contrast to previous studies that have investigated variations in morphometric traits in a single aneuploidy state, this study investigates a single morphometric trait, taurodontism, as it occurs in otherwise normal individuals, in nonchromosomal syndromes, and in aneuploidy syndromes to determine whe

A review of tooth formation in children with cleft lip/palate.

The literature on tooth formation in children with cleft lip and/or palate is reviewed. The main focus of interest is the association of cleft type and dental abnormalities in number, size, shape, timing of formation, and eruption and cause of the abnormalities. The upper lateral incisor is the most susceptible to injury in the area of cleft in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. This tooth is affected in most instances, even in the cases of microforms of the cleft lip. The prevalence of hypodontia increases strongly with the severity of cleft. More teeth are congenitally missing from the

High-resolution analysis of von Willebrand factor multimeric composition defines a new variant of type I von Willebrand disease with aberrant structure but presence of all size multimers (type IC).

In Type I von Willebrand disease, the whole series of von Willebrand factor (vWF) multimers is present in plasma, but all are decreased in quantity. No structural abnormality of individual multimers has been demonstrated so far in these patients. We now describe five individuals, from two unrelated families, who had this form of the disease and in whom the complex banding pattern of each vWF multimer was markedly abnormal. Inheritance was autosomal dominant and the clinical expression was mild. A bleeding history was elicited in three of the patients and included recurrent epistaxis, menometro

The importance of quantitative electron microscopy in studying hypertrophic neuropathies. A comparison between a case of Déjérine Sottas disease (HMSN III) and a case of the hypertrophic form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (HMSN I).

The electron microscopic features and quantitative morphometric data of the sural nerve in Déjérine-Sottas disease (HMSN III) and in the hypertrophic form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (HMSN I) are reported. Both forms are characterized by onion bulb formations, but they differ in: a) increased incidence of mucoid connective tissue in DS disease; b) higher incidence of demyelination in DS disease; c) uniformly small size of the remaining myelinated fibers in DS disease; d) larger and more developed onion bulbs in DS disease; e) clusters of 2-4 myelinated fibers in the core of onion bulbs of C
